ASME B31.12 Structure and Basis B31.12 is divided into three subsections– Section A: Industrial Piping– Section B: Pipelines and Distribution Piping– Section C: Residential piping There is also a section for the common useand reference by sections A, B and C7

Section B: Pipeline andDistribution Piping Model document for section B isASME B31.8 Anticipated operating ranges:– Pressure: full vacuum to 3,000 psig– Temperature: - 40 F to 300 F8

Research Needs Testing of all commonly used pipelinematerials for loss of fatigue and impactstrength in a high pressure hydrogenenvironment. Research the effects ofpressure cycling on mechanical properties Testing of pipe welds for sustained-loadcracking for all commonly used pipelinematerials. Review as welded, post weld heattreated and annealed weld performance14

Research Needs Determine if FRP pipes with metallic orplastic liners are viable alternatives formetallic pipes. Test joining methods forhydrogen compatibility. Develop asimplified analysis method for these pipes. Testing of commonly used plastic pipematerials for compatibility with high purityhydrogen environments. Test bonded andfusion joints for hydrogen resistance15

Where Do We Go From Here? Near term, the ASME B31.12 Task Groupwill utilize “Design Factors” to makesystem design more conservative untilactual material test data is available Encourage Risk Analysis of converted andnew hydrogen pipeline systems Impose System Integrity Managementusing ASME B31.8S as a model16

Where Do We Go From Here? Require in-service inspection, systemmaintenance and operator training withqualification for converted and newsystems. Reference B31Q (not yetpublished) Review results of material testingprograms, operating results and servicehistories and adjust ASME B31.12 asneeded17
