General.The trailers described in this manualare single axle, two-wheeled, steel frame trailersdesigned to be towed by a 3/4 ton passenger vehicleor truck passenger vehicle. h trailers areequipped with shock absorbers, springs, a n d a n Aframe drawbar which is bolted to the trailer frame(fig. 1-1). T h e drawbar incorporates a two positionlunette bracket and a landing leg. T h e landing leg isused to support the trailer when it is detached froma t0wir.g vehicle. T h e trailer lighting system isan'Ystemconnected to the vehicleintervehicular cable. T h e lights are operated fromthe towing vehicle. Each trailer is equipped with ahand 'perated parking brake.

T h e trailer chassis is used tomount the cargo body or the cable splicer body, orto transport portable equipment such a s generatorso?, field stoves.c. Cargo Trailers. The cargo trailer (figs. 1-2, 1 3, 1-4) is a general purpose cargo carrier designedto carry a load of 500 pounds cross country. T h ebody is of one piece welded construction, bolted tothe chassis. T h e body is watertight and will floatthe trailer and load during fording operations. T w odrain valves are provided, one in the left front, andone in the right rear of the floor. T h e trailer isequipped with a paulin to cover the cargo; thepaulin fastens to hooks welded to the trailer body.

CHAPTER 2INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS-----Section I. S E R V I C E U P O N R E C E I P T O f M A T E R I E L2-1. Inspecting and Servicing the Equipmenta . Inspection.( 1 ) Inspect the tires f o r cuts and scuffing.( 2 ) Inspect the trailer f o r physical damage.( 3 ) Inspect the electrical wiring and lights fordamage.( 4 ) Check the operation of the handbrake.( 5 ) Check nuts a n d bolts for secureness.b. Servicing.( 1 ) Check tire pressure. Inflate or deflate asrequired.( 2 ) Lubricate in accordance with the currentliibrication chart.3 ) Remove preservatives, if applicable.Installation of SeparatelyComponents. Not applicable.Packagedlnstallation or Setting Up Instructionsx t level terrain. Lower landing leg a n d detachtrailer from towing vehicle. Apply handbrake. Ifthe trailer is to be towed by a M 1 5 1 truck, positionthe lunette in the top hole in the lunette bracket. Ifthe towing vehicle is to be a M422 truck, positionthe lunette in the lower hole. Dismantling for Movementmay be stacked for movement.Under most circumstances, no dismantling of thetrailer is necessary for movement to a new worksite. Movement is generally by towing. GeneralT h i s section describes the operation of thehandbrake used on the cargo trailers, trailerchassis, and cable splicer trailer.2-7. Handbrake ControlT h e handbrake control is mounted on the rightfront of the trailer frame. T h e control is fitted witha spring-loaded adjustment. T h e adjustment is inthe top of the handle. Rotating the handle clockwise will remove slack from the brake cable.Counterclockwise rotation will produce slack in thecable (fig. 2-1). T o apply the handbrake, press thecontrol lever to the horizontal position. Release bylifting u p on the handle.\Figure 2-1. Handbrake cable tension adjustment.11

Generala.The instructions in this section are publishedfor the information and guidance of personnelresponsible for operation of the cargo trailer, trailerchassis. and cable splicer trailer.b.The operator must know how to perform everyoperation of which the cargo trailer, trailer chassis,or cable splicer trailer is capable. This section givesinstructions on attaching the trailers to the towingvehicle and on coordinating the basic motions toperform the specific tasks for which the equipmentis designed.2-9. Operation of Equipmenta . Preparation for Use.( 1 1 Perform the before-operation services(para 3-61.( 2 ) .Inspect the towing attachments on thetowing vehicle.b. Connection to T o w i n g Vehicle.( 1) Place the lunette over the towing vehiclepintle.( 2 ) Connect the safety chains.( 3 ) Plug the intervehicular connection cableinto the plug on the towing vehicle. Checi: forproper operation of trailer lights.( 4 ) Pull the landing leg locking pin (fig. 2-2)outward and rotate it 90 degrees.( 5 ) Rotate the landing leg upward and lock itin the stowed position with the locking pin. T u r n'he pin so that the handle points down to lock thekeg in position.( 6 ) Release the handbrake by rotating controllever upward.( 7 ) Check to make certain the trailer isproperly connected to the towing vehicle (fig. 2-3).1-Locking pin2-Landing legFigure 2-2. Avoid using handbrake, if possible, as brakesm a y freeze. Block the wheels front and rear withwood chocks.b. Keep the electrical connections covered whennot in use.2-11. Operation in Extreme Heata. Maintain proper tire pressure.b. Park the trailer in shade whenever possible.c. M a k e frequent inspections of the electricalwiring.2-12. Operation in Dusty or Sandy Areasa. Shorten the lubrication interval to preventexcessive wear. T h e interval should be shortenedaccording to prevailing conditions. Refer to currentlubrication chart.b. Keep all surfaces a s clean as possible. Cleanimmediately after use.c. Cover electrical connectors when not in use.2-13. Operation Under Rainy orConditionsHumida. Cover electrical connectors when not in use.b.Treat the paulin with a mildew preventive. D onot store the paulin when it is damp.c. Keep all surfaces and components clean.2-14. Operation in Salt Water Areasa. Keep the trailer clean. Wash with fresh water,when available.b. Inspect .frequently for signs of corrosion.Touch up a i n ast required.c. Cover electrical connectors when not in use.
