Kolkhorst and the Lower ColoradoRiver Authority (LCRA) hosted a touron Wednesday, June 22 to provide localleaders in the area with the first look atthe Lane City Reservoir since construction began in January.Scheduled to be completed in 2018,the reservoir is located off the mainchannel of the Colorado River in Wharton County. With a cost of approximately 250 million, the project is expected toadd 90,000 acre-feet of firm water to theregion’s water supply.“This is the first significant ColoradoRiver project of its kind below the Austin dams in decades, as well as being thefirst reservoir built in Texas in over 30years,” said Kolkhorst. “With the recentfloods, if the project had already beenbuilt, this reservoir could have beenfilled almost seven times in the last fewmonths of rain. That’s why this reservoiris a giant step forward in meeting the future water needs of our region.”The Lane City Reservoir is being builtto take advantage of the wetter climatein the lower basin of the Colorado Riverand is designed to capture and store runoff generated by rain that flows downstream of Lake Travis and the Austinarea. The Lane City Reservoir will storemore water than Lake Marble Falls,Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake combined.“Many thanks should go to the pastand present LCRA board members andtheir staff for making this plan a reality,”said Kolkhorst. “I am hopeful that thisoff-channel reservoir can serve as a model for other basins across the state thatface similar water demands and scarcity.”Additional benefits of the new reservoir include lessening the demands onthe Highland Lakes by improving thesupply and reliability of downstreamwater for agriculture and industry. Theproject is also expected to reduce thechance that “interruptible water contracts” will be forced to be cut back orcut off to the lower basin during futuredroughts.Lower Colorado River Authority graphicEast Wharton County Progress 2016Editor and PublisherBill WallaceManaging EditorKeith MageeOn the coverState Senator Lois W.
