WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained: Can you explain what we mean by a vocation or calling? I have heard this term used in many different contexts and am not sure what it means. Does it apply to religious life? A vocation or calling refers to a spiritual experiencewhereby a person senses within oneself thecloseness of God and what he is asking in one’s life.It is a realization of what one’s part in God’s plancould be. Vocation comes in all kinds of ways. Some are as dramatic as St. Paul’s, being knockedoff his horse, blinded, and hearing God’s voice.Others are less dramatic, often occurring over timethrough little events and personal interests. Othershappen in a hurry, accompanied by great spiritualinsight or conversion. We often think that thisapplies to religious vocation, but in fact, everyChristian has a vocation, a calling to serve others in and through the church. Whether married orsingle, religious or lay, we are all called to live outour baptismal commitment to preach and teach theGospel message. Each of us has our role to play inGod’s plan, and we become coworkers with God inthe work of redemption. With a little confidence, a willing spirit and God’s grace, we can and will respond to his unique call. Dn 7:13 14 / Rev 1:5 8 / Jn 18:33b 37 God is wonderfully and surprisingly creative! He turnsthe tables on our understanding of what it means to bea king by sending us a king who embraces poverty,Jesus did not usher in the kind of Kingdominsults, suffering, ridicule, rejection, and even death.the Jews were expecting. In today’s Gospel,This is our king. Jesus is not the king of prestige orJesus says, “My kingdom is not of thisgrandeur but the king who brings light to darkness, world.” His statement was confusing to Pilate, and his message was blasphemous to hope to despair, sinners to mercy, and new life out ofdeath. God dances on, around, in and through all of the Jews. But today, as we celebrate the silliness and ugliness of the world bringing all ofChrist the King Sunday, we acknowledgecreation to the eternal dance of new life and hope.Jesus Christ as King of the Universe. Whether we accept it now or hope that we one day do,He established not a political kingdom, but Christ is king of the universe. Christ is the alpha anda Heavenly one. His dominion is infinite, the omega, the beginning and the end. Every humanyet His focus is narrow ² His focus is YOUbeing, even those who scorned and rejected him andand I! He challenges us to give Him reignfailed to see him in the least of our brothers andover our lives, not our lands! In Jesus, wesisters, will look upon him. Only those who understandhave been given a perfect, righteous, andtruth will understand that we are on this awesomeloving King who wants to sit on the thrones universal journey to Christ. It is a journey of surprisesof our hearts. Will you allow it? but also a journey of enlightenment when we will oneWill you invite Jesus to reign over your life? day see and experience with the deepest joy our being in Christ. We will be restless until we are all one day St. Teresa Stewardship Committee together united in Christ our King. King of the Universe Great websites to learn more about our faith. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments Long Live the King Did you know that you can become royalty, for the rightprice? It’s true ² for the low, low cost of 50, you, too, can purchase a 12 square inch souvenir plot of Scottish landand call yourself “Laird So and so.” Now, this lordship orladyship doesn’t come with the ability to boss anyone around, but maybe your friends will be impressed enough (The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) to bend the knee. My point is, we’ve all got our own littlefiefdoms ² folks or communities for which we have afeeling of responsibility. Maybe we’re not their “king,” but most of us have those we think of as “our people.” Now, in this world, people lay themselves down for theirwww.parishesonline.com/find/st teresa church kings. History is riddled with the bodies of men, young andold ² and plenty of women and children, too ² who werecasualties of wars waged by men in power, men who neverhad to shed their own blood. But in the next world, the KingThe Pope's Monthly Intention November dies for his people. This is leadership par excellence ² the leadership of someone whose love is greater than hisPeople Who Suffer from Depression ambition. We are all leaders of a sort. On the parish level,We pray that people who suffer fromyou have the obvious roles ² serving on pastoral council, depression or burn out will find support spearheadingthe capital campaign, leading the Altar Guild.and a light that opens them up to life. But you also have the quiet ones who lead from the wings ²the janitor who can always be relied upon to do his job, or the volunteer librarian who puts in extra hours on theweekends. There is a saying ² find your people. I say, find your people, and find a way to lay yourself downfor them, in imitation of the greatest King that ever was. ² Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
