Incoming president, Joy Graham and Executive Secretary, LaVonne Kirkpatrick were trained from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning.Vice-presidents, treasurers, editors and webmasters were trained also.The conference offered keynote speakers who emphasized the positiveinfluences that teachers have had on their lives. Members attended manybreakout sessions for professional and personal development.Kappa State members had opportunities to go off site for dinner and fellowship with International President, Carolyn Pittman and on Friday morning enjoyed breakfast together in Carolyn’s suite. Candi Martin, SoutheastRegion Representative, presided over the U.S. Forum Session on Fridaymorning and all Kappa State members attended. Next year the International Convention will be in Austin, TX. Start making plans to go!Candi MartinThe Kappa State Fall Meeting willbe on September 23 at 2nd Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drivein Little Rock. Come enjoy a time withfellow DKG members. Registration willstart at 8:30 along with a light breakfast. Kappa State committee memberswill meet at 8:30 and the first generalsession will begin at 9:15.There will be training sessions forchapter officers including presidents,1st vice presidents/Educational Excellence Chairman, 2nd vice president/Membership Chairman, secretaries,treasurers and parliamentarians. Other sessions to be offered are: Findingthe Leader Within; Dealing with DifficultParents; Apps for Teachers; BeginningQuilting; NOAA Teacher At Sea Experience; DKG is in Crisis and We NeedHelp; and Technology You Use: OurNew Kappa State Website, DKG International and the DKG App.The luncheon speaker will be DanielMoix, a computer science educationalspecialist. Mr. Moix will talk about coding and other new initiatives for the students in the state of Arkansas.The business meeting will includevoting on our standing rules. September, 2017“Continuing the Journey” From The President:It’s been a busy two months for me! Getting ready for DKG’sSoutheast Regional Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC, consumedthe beginning of July. I spent an amazing week at the conference.The 2-day training for new state presidents before the conferenceofficially began was very beneficial. The general sessions beginning on Thursday were fantastic! The conference centered aroundleading women educators making an impact on students’ lives andtheir education. The conference was well worth my time to attend.Kappa State’s Fall Meeting is not far away. I’m looking forwardto meeting the chapter presidents in the afternoon break-out session that is scheduled. There will also be training sessions for otherchapter officers led by your state officers. Please encourage yourchapter officers to attend our annual Fall Meeting.Mark your calendars also for DKG’s International Convention inAustin, TX, July 16-20, 2018. Kathy Sharp andSue Cook of Alpha Beta Chapterworked with Troop 2019 membersthrough a Kappa State Educational Foundation Project grant. Eachgirl earned their patch and learnedabout the history of Dr. Annie WebbBlanton, the founder of Delta KappaGamma, and compared the historyto Juliette Gordon Low, the founderof Girl Scouts. The girls recited theGirl Scout Pledge and the DKG mission statement. Girl Scouts madefork daisies and even watched avideo of DKG members singing theDKG song.Foundation Board NewsThe Kappa State Educational Foundation Board of Trustees met onJune 17, at St. Vincent North in North Little Rock with Vice President Cissie Pendergrass presiding.Business included the reading of President Sharon Rapp’s resignationfrom the Foundation Board. Cissie Pendergrass was elected to fill Sharon Rapp’s term as President. The following officers were elected for the2017-2019 term: Sue Cook, Vice President; Cathy Long, Secretary; andEarlene Hankins, Treasurer. Newly elected trustees to the Board are TerriLeins and Rebecca Jones. The ex officio members are Candace Martin,Joy Graham and Cathy Toney.The Education Foundation will have a fund raiser at the Kappa StateFall Meeting on September 23. Sue Cook will bring an owl theme basketto be raffled off at that meeting.Committees were formed for the next meeting that will be held on October 7th. During this meeting, the Projects Committee will select theprojects to be awarded that promote excellence in education. I taught in theWeiner School District for seven yearsand then moved to Little Rock and continued my career in the Bauxite SchoolDistrict for thirty-three more years.
