GPS is mainly used inthe military, farming, civil, transportation andcommercial users around the world. Here in this reviewpaper, we describe how GPS Tracking System worksand where it is useful in real world environment. Wecompare different algorithms like Localizationalgorithm, kalman filter algorithm and methodologieslike GPS, GPRS, GSM, GIS, GSM and RFID. We haveidentified some problems of GPS.since forty years. It was designed for militarypurposes. It is being used for geology, navigation, farming, precision mapping, surveying, andadditional applications are on stand growing [1].General Term:Kalman Algorithm, Localization Improvement AlgorithmKeywords:GPS, GSM, RFID.1. INTRODUCTIONLocation awareness (Object Tracking) and navigationare becoming one of the most important requirements ofthe people [1]. Personal navigation and location basedservices are provided by the GPS. The GPS project wasdeveloped in 1973 to overcome the limitations ofprevious navigation systems [2], integrating ideas fromseveral predecessors, including a number of classifiedengineering design studies from the 1960s. GPS wascreated and realized by the U.S. Department ofDefense (DOD) and was originally run with 24 satellites[1].Figure 2 Object Track by 3 GPS satellites [4]GPS is a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).GNSS is a system for location or position determination –so it’s called as a geo positioning. Using a special receiver,a geo position in space and time can be calculated based onthe reception of satellite signals [6].Figure 3 Object Tracking System using GPS& GSM [5]Figure 1 In GPS 24 satellites around the Earth [3]The Global Positioning System (GPS) technology isa satellite-based navigation system that has been useNow a days, also smart phone provide the built in facilitiesfor the navigation and tracking. So there is reduction in thesize of the GPS receivers and the integration of GPS withmobile phones.40

International Journal of Computer Applications (0975 – 8887)Volume 109 – No. 8, January 2015Paper is organized as below. In section 2 we have doneliterature of different papers describing working of GPSand algorithms used in it. Section 3 shows the methods andalgorithm for the GPS and finally in section 4 we giveconclusion of the Literature review. They use kalman algorithm to recognize the actual locationof object. While vehicle is running, SMS is passed to theauthenticated person. Model has tracking unit, which trackthe movement of vehicle and after certain period of timethe data is send to the authenticate person.2. RELATED WORK2.1. Literature ReviewThe advantages of this system are that it is inexpensive andlight weight, and disadvantage is that if the authenticatedperson is unavailable then the problem may arise. In [7], GPS and GSM based model are used for routing andtracking of mobile vehicles in a large area outdoorenvironment. In this model it has a GPS Unit, thatcontinuously moves with the car and will calculate the coordinates of each position and communicate to GSMdevice which is installed in both Transmitter and receiversection. The uses of GPS technology incorporated with roadmapping are in [9]. The GPS data receiver application andtraffic analysis system was developed which collects theGPS traffic data and provides the ability for monitoring andanalyzing traffic scenarios on the roads.Advantages of this system is that ,all these aspects can beanalyzed both in real-time and historically based on the factthat historical data is captured and stored for future use andproblem is that it requires large size of database to store allthe data. Some traffic management measures use sophisticatedsystems.Figure 4 Transmitter Section inbuilt in the vehicle [7]The device will collect position and display on GoogleEarth and so the current position of the car can be known. The advantage of this model is, we can easily identify thetheft vehicle and also improve routing and tracking intransportation, they use hardware which has arm processor. And Limitation is that when the movement occurs at thattime we will get the location, so data may not come by theGPS Unit.GPS based low-cost vehicle tracking and monitoringsystem is proposed in [8],it includes a transmitting ofretrieve location and vehicle status information and thensend it to the other stationary module; the second part is thereceiving module which collects the transmittedinformation by SMS and process it to a compatible formatto Google Earth to view the location and vehicle statusonline. For Remote control of the vehicle tracking location throughGPS tracking & detection of object to avoid collision isavailable in [10].AVL is an advanced method used to trackand monitor any remote vehicle equipped through GPSsatellite. AVL is a combination of GPS and GIS thatprovides actual geographical real time position of eachvehicle.Figure 7 AVL Tracking [10].Main Benefits of this AVL is that it contains execution ofStartup routine, Logs of Tracking Server and Pointing outcurrent location of vehicle so we can easily track and getdetail of the vehicle. But in case of long distance betweenvehicles RFID is not applicable.Location awareness and navigation is becoming one of themost important features in mobile phones and smartphones. Its description is in [11]. Mobile phones and smartphonesusually have relatively low cost GPS chips.Figure 5. Structure of Anti-theft system [8]It proposes the LBS in GPS interfering spots by integratinginformation of multiple sensors such as gyroscope andcompass in smartphones. International Journal of Computer Applications (0975 – 8887)Volume 109 – No. 8, January 2015This algorithm gives GPS positioning error in a smartphonewhen the user is nearby high rise building. The system is not limited to find the location of the targetbut also calculates the distance travelled b/w two stations.Advantages of this Model is that it is user friendly, easilyinstallable, easily accessible and can be used for variouspurposes. After installation system will locate the target bythe use of a Web application (HTML based application) inGoogle map. The system allows to track the target anytimeand anywhere in any weather conditions.Figure 6 Conceptual Models [9].They conclude that to solve the traffic problem in the cities, following concept can be used:1.2.Any Nation intending to adopt the model must put inplace a policy and/or law prompting all vehicle ownersto fit their vehicles with GPS trackers.GPS traffic management is considered as a prioritytraffic management. The experimental results in the GPS interfering spot. TheGPS location information deviates from the real pathmoved. On the other hand, the adjusted locationinformation through the proposed algorithm can trace themovement path more accurately. Also Existing technology like Automatic navigationsystem, GPSylon and open GTS. In this paper, trackingsystem consist of components like GPS satellite, car orperson with compatible Device, GSM service provider, tracking server and Client PC which are defined in [21].GPS satellite sends the GPS data to the device which storethe temporal stores data in the case of the car used the AVL(Advanced Vehicle Locator). Advantages of the system arethat it has SIM card, So we can easily Identify the Object.SIM card which is used to communicate with the localGSM network thus the device uses GPS as well as GSMnetwork.Problem is that require high level data storage for database. We can use the data whenever we want it for gettingreports, for live tracking, for preparing Keyhole MarkupLanguage (KML) and other purposes. KML is a file formatused to display the geographical data of the earth inbrowser, such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and GoogleMaps for mobile. All this paper has some methods for GPS data store, retrieve and transmit via some methods. All this methodsare described in the next session.3. METHODS AND ALGORITHMS3.1.MethodsDuring literature review studies the basic method for theObject Tracking on the Global Positioning System; all thismethodologies are describing bellow:3.1.1Figure 9. Result of Localization Algorithm byTrigrometric Function [11].The proposed algorithm has better performance than theGPS location information in GPS interfering spots andmaintains reasonable performance in open spaces where theGPS receiver is accurate.Combination of GPS and GSM is used in [12] .In thissystem CMOS-8bit Microcontroller is used and it is basedon RISC architecture. It uses the MAX232 for serialcommunication for GPS, GSM and Microcontroller, 16x2LCD is used to display the location value. The monitoring unit consists of a GSM mobile and a WebApplication. The GSM mobile acquires the position of thevehicle (longitude and latitude) and then by typing thoseco-ordinates in web application owner of vehicle can getthe exact location of the vehicle. This has limitation with GPS device and a two waycommunication process is achieved using a GSM modem.GSM modem, provided with a SIM card uses the samecommunication process as we are using in regular phone.Object Tracking using GPSIf want to track any object using GPS then we can trackthrough satellite and GPS Unit. Satellite is used for receiveand transmit the data from GPS Unit. It is used at clientside for connecting with satellite. It displays the Longitudeand Latitude which is received from the satellite. We canalso attach the external Hardware for more functionality oftracking like sending all the details of object, sending SMSto authenticated person.3.1.2Object Tracking using GPS andGSMIf want to track any object using GPS and GSM then it hascombination of GPS network and GSM network. From theGPS network whatever data will be received by GPS Unit itwill be transmitted to server via GSM network. Afterprocessing the data, it is transferred to another application(like on website or on phone). It also used in AVL(Automatic Vehicle Location) and GIS (GeographicalInformation System).3.1.3Object Tracking using RFIDIf want to track any object using RFID then it hascombination of GPS network and GSM network. International Journal of Computer Applications (0975 – 8887)Volume 109 – No. 8, January 20153.3.AlgorithmsDuring literature review studies the basic algorithm for theObject Tracking on the Global Positioning System; thisentire algorithm is described as bellow:3.3.1 Localization Improvement AlgorithmThis localization improvement algorithm in GPS interferingspots by integrating information of multiple sensors such asgyroscope and compass in smart phones. The proposedalgorithm is implemented in a smart phone [12]. There are3 steps to implement this algorithm:1.Structure of Algorithm:- The proposed algorithmconsists of three steps:1.Finding the correct direction of movement.2.Obtaining the distance moved, and3.Integrating the prior results and GPSlocation information. The heading value of the compass can be stabilized. But thereal heading of a user varies continuously as the usermoves. To adjust this value, here apply the differencebetween the previous heading and current heading andprocess it recursively.3.3.2 Kalman Filter AlgorithmsKalman filtering, also known as linear quadratic estimation(LQE).Kalman filter is implemented to reduce GPS errorsand thus it increases the accuracy of the localizationsystem. The algorithm works in two-step process.1.In the prediction step, the Kalman filter producesestimates of the current state variables, along with theiruncertainties.2.Once the outcome of the next measurement(necessarily corrupted with some amount of error, including random noise) is observed, these estimates areupdated using a weighted average, with more weight beinggiven to estimates with higher certainty. To obtain the direction of movement, get the heading fromthe built-in compass in the smart phone. However, thecompass is highly dependent on the ambient magnetic fieldso it has lower accuracy. To obtain more accurate values of the user's heading, westabilize the heading value of the compass by recurrenceprocessing of the data. After obtaining the direction of themovement of the user, the distance moved is calculated bythe summation of the distances of each coordinate from theGPS location information.2.Recurrence Processing Function of CompassHeadingx0 a0x1 (x0 a1)/2xn (xn-1 an )/(n 1 )xi: accumulated heading valueai : a new compass valueFigure 10. First Equation of the Recursive function [11]The measurements of the compass in Smartphone arehighly dependent on the ambient magnetic field so itsaccuracy is low. For this reason, here stabilize themeasurements of the compass by averaging.x0 a0x1 (x0 d1 a1)/2xn (xn-1 dn an )/(n 1 )xi: accumulated heading valueFigure 12 Kalman Filter Procedure for estimatingof GPS receiver coordinates [23].The algorithm's recursive nature, it can run in real timeusing only the present input measurements and thepreviously calculated state and its uncertainty matrix; noadditional past information is required.4. CONCLUSIONFrom all this literature review we have get some problemlike Signal Multipath, Receiver and Orbital Clock error,Environmental problem like Ionospheres delay, trophoesferdelay ,delay because of the distance and delay in time, lowaccuracy in result. So, we conclude that we want to solve the increase inaccuracy of actual location of object and resultingLocation.ai : a new compass valuedi : difference of headingFigure 11.
