June 2019Page 3Chief ’sCornerBeginning my last article for the IOVJournal, I would like to correct the datefor the 100th Anniversary of Linne’Lodge #57: it will be celebrated onOctober 12, 2019. Hoping to see manyof you there to celebrate our centennialand share some memories that youmay have of our Lodge! There will be areminder along with more informationin the September Journal. Mark yourcalendar!I am very honored to have held thisposition for the last two years! It hasbeen VERY rewarding and stressfulat times, trying to lead you, the members, down the road to survival. We, thecouncil, know that some of you are not too pleased about surrendering yourinsurance, but again, it is the only way for us to become a Social FraternalOrganization. As a Social Fraternal Organization we will continue to bring innew members without insurance! The catch-22 in the next two years is, if youwould like to run as a delegate or run for a position on the council, you musthave insurance. We have to follow our Constitution and the requirements ofthe State of Illinois.William SchaeferGrand ChiefIOV Executive Council:Grand ChiefWilliam H. Page 4June 2019Administrator’s CornerHello, Vikings!Things are moving along as wetransition member management andlodge support out of UTG. There arethe (expected) “speed-bumps” along theway, but our goal is to build consistentsystems that allow us to most effectivelymanage this national organization! I willcontinue to address common questionsfrom members, until we have everythingin-house and new systems tightened up.Lodge Officers: you should havereceived a packet of UPDATED Lodgereport forms and guidelines. Pleasediscard old membership applications andreporting forms and use the new forms, effective immediately. If you have not seenthis packet, please let me know!“But I quit paying my premiums ”As we work through the surrenderprocess, we’ve run into a couple ofmisunderstandings. One is that peoplewill lose their membership in the Vikingsif they surrender their insurance. Nottrue! The other is that, if a member quitspaying their insurance premiums, theirpolicy will be automatically “terminated”(surrendered). Also, not true! For aninsurance policy to be surrendered, the policy owner must submit a signed, dated, and witnessed surrender form.If you quit paying your premiums youend up with a lapsed policy, but it is NOTsurrendered. Remember – delegatesand executive council members MUSTkeep their insurance; they will be thelast to surrender when the insuranceprogram closes and the Constitution canbe changed.“Where do I send my check?” Dueto the requirements for administering theinsurance program, UTG still managesIOV’s finances. HOWEVER, they do notkeep track of membership payments orany changes to member information. Tomake sure IOV’s database and lodge filesare correct, financial secretaries shouldchoose ONE of the following:1. Send your check made payable toIOV (and report/description of whatthe payment is for) to the FraternalAdministration office. I will keepcopies of the information we needhere and forward the check on to UTGfor deposit into IOV’s account. OR2. If you prefer to send the check directlyto UTG, make sure to send a copy ofthe check and report to the FraternalAdministration Office. UTG does notsend me reports on lodge payments. If YOU (the Lodge) do not notify meof payment, I will not know.NOTE: If you are an individual memberof the GRAND LODGE, your membershipdues should also be sent to the FraternalAdministration office.“Can I get a member card?” IOVdoes not issue member cards. If you aretravelling to another lodge to visit, you canuse the membership dues receipt fromyour Lodge to verify membership. Locallodges also have the option to provide aletter, verifying current membership. NEWmembers to the IOV now receive a letterfrom the Fraternal Administration officethat includes their member number, whichcan also be shown when visiting a lodge.“How do we handle seasonaladdresses?” The main purpose of thenational IOV Member Database is tomake sure members receive the Journal, electronically or by USPS. Some of ourVikings travel a lot (and in differentseasons), and we rely on the financialsecretaries from each lodge to keepus up to date on address changes. IOVis spending nearly 1,000 per year in“address service fees” (returned mailand forward notices) from the USPS.Sometimes we change addresses in thedatabase based on USPS notices, only tofind that “we were only gone a month andwe’re back home now!” With nearly 5,000members to serve, we spend a lot of timetrying to track people down. Movingforward, IOV will NOT be mailing theJournal “address service requested.” Wewill keep track of PERMANENT addresses(provided by financial secretaries) andwill rely on the members to ensure theyfile the appropriate forwarding or “holdmail” notice with their local post office. Ofcourse, you can always find the IOV Journalon the website as well. If you believethat the national office does not haveyour correct address, please notify thefinancial secretary at your lodge. Theirrecords feed into our records, so we wantto make sure we are consistent! If you have other questions or itemsthat need clarification, just let me know.I look forward to attending the IOVConvention in June and meeting LodgeDelegates!Have a great summer!RobinRobin Lynn GrinnellIOV Fraternal Administrator3852 Weger Place - Lansing, MI 48910rlgrinnell@yahoo.com - 989-292-0482Burn Camp NewsThe March 2019 Journal contained a great letter from Mike Longnecker who is the President of the GreatLakes Burn Camp. Page 6June 2019EDMUND LODGE NO. 91Woburn, MassachusettsGreetings from New England! After a long, cold winter Edmund Lodge is still doing well and enjoyinglife. We just celebrated our 90th anniversary with the Independent Order OfVikings. The Edmund Lodge #91 charter was established on March 29th, 1929with 52 members, including Henry W. Stenquist, Sr. The Stenquists havebeen a constant presence in our lodge ever since and we are grateful for theirdedication and service. We decided to celebrate this momentous occasion with a luncheon. Wemet on Saturday, April 27th, at the Century House Restaurant in Peabody, MA.It was a grand time! We had 11 members in attendance which may not seemlike many people, but 11 members represent nearly 40% of our membership! That was great! We were also joined by the chief of Gripsholm Lodge #83,Barbara Davis. Jim and Elaine Goodwin even drove up from North Carolinato attend the event.Past Grand Chief Henry W. Stenquist, Jr. read a brief history of the IOVand presented us with a list of every person who has ever been a member ofEdmund Lodge – a total of 432 people! That’s a lot of people for a small lodgelike us!We took over the restaurant for more than three and a half hours! Ourwaitress was wonderful and took good care of us. The conversations werelively and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Our next big event will be the June lodge meeting and cookout at thehome of Chief Jennifer Thissell and her husband Steve. That is always a funtime with plenty of food and drink. Steve’s famous smoker ribs and seafoodare sure to be a big hit and the lobsters will be freshly steamed. We are a small lodge but we remain active and relevant, supporting localorganizations and charities as much as possible and always enjoying our timetogether.Happiness is - Being A Viking!Jim GoodwinEdmund Lodge #91 Correspondent

June 2019Page 7SIGURD LODGE #30Kenosha, WisconsinHi all,It’s supposed to be spring here in SE Wisconsin but as I writethis article it’s snowing (April 27th) . Oh well by the time you readthis it should be warm, hopefully.Jim Hansen passed away on March 2nd. He had been in ICUat the hospital for a month. He was a member for 50 some yearsand was also the member that signed me up as a member 50years ago, June 19, 1969. Many years ago, Jim served on the IOVexecutive council. In fact, I went to some council meetings withhim when they were held in downtown Chicago. Our sympathyis extended to his wife Sue and son Eric. We’ve had a few of our members who have been on the illand distressed list. In March, Alice Turner was in the hospital fora while. Also in March, Joyce Jacob slipped on the ice and brokeher wrist; then just recently in April, my wife Dee stepped on someuneven ground and fell and landed on concrete and fractured abone in her lower arm. Hopefully all these young ladies are doingwell. Now, for some good news! We had a very well-attendedSwedish Pancake and Sausage Breakfast in March. Once again,we had to turn people away as we couldn’t keep up! I guess thatgoes to show how great our pancakes are. We even had guestsfrom Yugoslavia and Sweden (they were both exchange studentsgoing to Indian Trail and Academy). It was nice to see Past GrandChief Ralph Beck and his wife Ruth from Batavia, and also SallyKnutson, Peggy Stegall, and Scott and Jane Erbe from Rockford. We had a record profit on the bake sale, so thank you to everyone who made bake goods as well as to all the great help - wewouldn’t be able to do it without you. We donated a portion of theprofits to a worthy cause, the SUDC foundation which stands forSudden Unexpected Death in Childhood. One of our members,Christine Schneider lost her four year-old granddaughter, OliviaSchneider, suddenly a year ago. Our donation went to SUDC inhonor of Livy’s Legacy.Recently we initiated two more members: Wendy Gold andJeana Peters joined our ranks as Vikings. Velkomenn girls!April 6th Dee and I traveled to Muskegon for the ExecutiveCouncil meeting at Linne’ Lodge. On Friday night all the counciland spouses went to a very nice meal in downtown Muskegon.Saturday morning at 9:00 am was the start of a quite lengthy, but very productive, meeting. A lot of the meeting pertained tothe surrender of the insurance policies. I can’t stress enough ifyou have not surrendered yet (except council members and delegates) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE would you surrender that policy?I’m sure you know that by surrendering your policy you still will bea member of the IOV. Please do not disregard the letter you getfrom someone from the surrender committee, it would make ourjob so much easier. On Saturday night we all met at Linne’ Lodgefor the Grand Chief’s swan song. We had a very good cook yourown steak dinner with all the trimmings you wanted. Thanks toall of you that helped arrange all the great food, and thanks toyou Bill for doing a great job as a great Grand Chief and the giftthat you gave to all of the Executive Council members. Finally just a friendly reminder that Sigurd Lodge will only bemeeting the first Friday during the summer months (June, July,August); in September we only have one meeting but you canstill stop by the club and say hi!So, until next time, enjoy your summer and stay healthy.Fraternally,Rod Ottum

Page 8June 2019INGJALD LODGE NO. 65Jamestown, New YorkIngjald Lodge Winter-Spring ActivitiesWinter snows and unpredictable weather doesn’t slow ourViking Club down. Dinners are served every Friday and Saturdaynight and have limited menus on Sunday afternoons andWednesday nights. Early in January new officers were installedfor 2019 and committee planning began for 2019. We had a “CornHole Tournament” in January followed by a “Super Bowl TailgateParty” early in February. The 12th Annual Crazy Swede PolarBear Swim took place in the middle of February. Four “fearlessbrave” Vikings were up to the task of entering the icy waters ofChautauqua Lake. There wasn’t much snow on the ground at thattime and some of the snow activities had to be cancelled, but theLake was frozen solid. A hole was cut in the ice on Saturday inanticipation of the icy plunge Sunday but had to be recut becauseit had been frozen over. The Maple Springs Fire Department wasin attendance to handle any emergencies. The valiant efforts ofour four hearty Vikings raised 510.00 to help pay for our Lodge’smany youth activities throughout the year. A good time was hadby all for a worthy cause! We didn’t turn our beautiful Chautauqua Lake green but weDID celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in true neighborly Viking style! DJ’sUnlimited provided a wide variety of Irish music and “Corn Beefand Cabbage” was served all weekend. In April our Lodge hosteda true Swedish pancake breakfast complete with “Lingonberries”and sausages. The annual kids’ Easter party was held later in Aprilfollowed up with the ever pop
