MEMBRANETECHNOLOGYINNOVATIVE, GLOBAL TREATMENT SOLUTIONSFOR WATER AND WASTEWATER

COVERING THE WATERFRONTWith a track record of more than 50 membrane facilitydesigns worldwide, Black & Veatch is a global leader inmembrane filtration for drinking water, reclamation/reuse andwastewater treatment. The company has designed a combinedmembrane capacity exceeding 600 million gallons per day(mgd), 2270 million liters per day (Ml/d), on five continents.MEMBRANE FILTRATIONBlack & Veatch has extensive experience in evaluating, designing and constructing membrane facilities. In addition, we provide complete pilotplant services, protocols, equipment, operation and dataanalysis. For full-scale projects, Black & Veatch providesnProcess selection anddesign decisions basedon life cycle costsnComprehensiveknowledge of membranesfacilitated selection, piloting, design andstart-up trainingplanning, cost studies, design, specifications, constructionmanagement, commissioning, start-up and training asAt the outset, WaterOne and Black & Veatch workedwell as design-build (turnkey) services.together to answer the question: will granular media ormembranes be more cost effective for the new plant?Membrane technology is a rapidly changing field. RO provides a side benefit of softening the water.A pilot program verified the design. With an agricultural theme, the building blends wellwith the surrounding 40-acre park-like setting and biketrail. A 55-foot silo disguises a forced draft decarbonator, which adjusts the pH of the water for corrosion controlwhile cost-effectively allowing gravity flow to the finishedwater storage. The facility has earned several awards, including Project of the Year from American Public WorksAssociation’s Chicago Chapter.CHAPARRAL WATER TREATMENT PLANTScottsdale, ArizonanAward-winning facilityincorporates technologywith unique architecturalthemenBlends into adjacentneighborhood and parknSix-month pilot studycompared treatmentalternatives and costsnFerric coagulation andsubmerged UF for filtration and arsenic removalA key challenge—in addition to water treatment—wasblending the facility into the neighboring park andconstrained footprint. The project team achieved this witha cost evaluation, pilot and design that included selectingequipment with the lowest life cycle cost. The pilotcompared four types of membranes and two grades ofGAC operated with and without preozonation. The resulting 30-mgd Chaparral WTP treats surfacewater with ferric coagulation, submerged UF membranes, granular activated carbon and hypochlorite generatedon-site for arsenic removal, filtration, taste and odor, anddisinfection byproduct control. The plant has received many awards, including the GrandAward (Arizona’s American Consulting Engineers), Art inPublic Places Award (Valley Forward Association), WaterProject of the Year (Arizona Water Pollution Control Association), and Judges Special Award of Excellence (PCBC,formerly known as the Pacific Coast Builders Conference).BL ACK & VEATCH 3

Black & VeatchBAKERSFIELD WATER TREATMENT PLANThas provided Singapore’s PUB with a wide range of projects,Bakersfield, Californiaincluding surface water treatment with MF/UF membranes(72-mgd Chestnut Avenue and 48-mgd Choa Chu Kang,CCK, Waterworks), seawater desalination (36-mgd Tuasand an ongoing 84.5-mgd expansion project), and a dualmembrane (MF/UF and RO) 50-mgd water reclamationBAKERSFIELD WATER TREATMENT PLANTSthat is called the Changi NEWater project.nThree membrane-basedplants: Northeast,Northwest and SouthnNortheast andNorthwest in operation, and South in designMembranes were blended into existing traditional waterplants at Chestnut and CCK, incorporating creative engineering solutions, such as siphons, to cost-effectively use thenCost-efficient facilities fora private water companynSouth Bakersfield pilotcompared ceramicto more commonpolymeric membranesexisting hydraulic profiles while providing the driving forcefor the submerged membranes. The California Water Service Company, the largest investorowned water utility west of the Mississippi, hired Black &Veatch to design, pilot and build membrane-based plants. The 20-mgd (76-Ml/d) Northeast plant has treated riverwater since 2003, and the 8-mgd (30-Ml/d) Northwest planthas applied membranes since 2006. The utility selectedmembranes for cost-effective operations while providing ahigh quality tap water.Membranes were selected for the South plant based on thesuccess of the previous facilities. A new approach, ceramicmembranes, was compared to polymeric membranes in pilotand bidding to find the lowest life cycle cost option in thisChoa Chu KangSingaporerapidly changing field. While the ceramic option piloted welleven at high flux conditions not allowed by the polymericmembranes, a polymeric option was more cost-effectivein this case. Preliminary design has been completed, anddetailed design of the 20-mgd (76-Ml/d) facility is ongoing.

Membrane Integration on chip It is crucial to apply a membrane (i.e. material and type) that best fits the targeted application. Membrane properties differ from one membrane to another and they greatly affect the overall membrane separation efficiency.
