We have been here for 100 years, and we’ve beenfighting for reproductive health care and rights sinceday one. We’re going to be here for another 100years — and then some — and though the path forwardisn’t an easy one, ours never has been. PlannedParenthood has weathered some intense storms inour history, and we’ve come out of each one stronger, smarter, and fiercer than ever before.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 01

01MESSAGE FROMOUR LEADERSHIPThis year, we are celebrating a century ofcare, education, and activism that haschanged everything about the way we liveand love.Today, those attacks have reached afever pitch.Planned Parenthood has spent a centuryexpanding and protecting access to sexualand reproductive health care andinformation so all people feel empoweredto build the future they want. From thearrest of Planned Parenthood League ofConnecticut’s Executive Director EstelleGriswold — which led to the 1965 SupremeCourt decision legalizing birth control formarried women — to the successfulcampaign to level the field for women’shealth with the Affordable Care Act,we have much to be proud of in ourfirst 100 years.Yet in the face of a record number of statelaws restricting reproductive rights, efforts by anti-women’s health politiciansin Congress to block access to care atPlanned Parenthood, and a newadministration that is hostile to the valueswe hold close, we never stopped livingour mission.Every day, our doctors, clinicians, and staffopen the doors of Planned Parenthoodhealth centers across the country toprovide high-quality, compassionate care.In 2015, nearly 650 Planned Parenthoodhealth centers served 2.4 million women, men, and young people. And we’reproviding accurate health informationOur progress has been hard fought. Sincethe day in 1916 that three women werearrested at a small storefront in Brooklyn —just for handing out information abouthow to prevent pregnancy — PlannedParenthood’s mission has faced opposition.02 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

and high-quality health care in moreinnovative ways than ever before.Planned Parenthood expanded onlineappointment scheduling and online healthservices; launched our period tracker app,Spot On; and premiered our virtual realityfilm, Across the Line, at the Sundance FilmFestival, giving us a new medium to tell thePlanned Parenthood story and changehearts and minds. And nearly 70 millionpeople visited Planned Parenthood onlinefor accurate, science-based sexual andreproductive health information — totally freeand available 24/7 in English and Spanish. With our 10 million supporters, we arestronger than ever. Today, three-quarters ofJILL LAFEROutgoing ChairPlanned Parenthood Federation of AmericaAmericans believe that Planned Parenthoodhealth centers should continue to receiveMedicaid reimbursement for the preventivecare they provide to millions of people. This country is at a 30-year low in unintendedpregnancy, a historic all-time low in teenagepregnancy, and — thanks to affordableaccess to effective contraception — we’re atthe lowest abortion rate since Roe v. Wadewas decided. We have worked for this progress for100 years. Planned Parenthood isn’t theproblem — we are the solution. AndPlanned Parenthood will continue providingcare to everyone who comes throughour doors. 02THE HISTORY OFOUR MOVEMENT1916On October 16, Margaret Sanger — togetherwith her sister Ethel Byrne and fellow activistFania Mindell — open the country’s first birthcontrol clinic in BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.1970After the Medicaid program is established in1965, President Nixon signs TITLE X OF THEPUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES ACT into law, providing public funding for family planningservices and sex education programs.1994WOMEN OF COLOR IGNITE THEREPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE MOVEMENTin the U.S. by promoting an inclusiveplatform to advance reproductive healthas it intersects with social justice.04 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT1930In response to many BLACK WOMEN BEINGDENIED ACCESS to health and social services,Sanger opens a new clinic in Harlem. It’sendorsed by the New York Urban League andsupported by prominent Harlem churches.1971Planned Parenthood Federation of America(PPFA) forms its international arm, now knownas PLANNED PARENTHOOD GLOBAL.2000The FDA APPROVES MEDICATIONABORTION, which gives pregnant individualsin the U.S. another safe and effective optionfor abortion early in pregnancy.“ It was the dawn of a new day in my life I went to bed knowing thatno matter what it might cost I was resolved to seek out the root of evil,to do something to change the destiny of mothers, whose miserieswere as vast as the sky.”—M ARGARET SANGER1951Planned Parenthood awards a grant to threeresearchers to undertake the DEVELOPMENTOF THE BIRTH CONTROL PILL.1973In the landmark decision Roe v. 03CARE.NO MATTER WHAT.For 100 years, increasing access to health care and information has been atthe center of what we do. By supporting 56 independently incorporatedPlanned Parenthood affiliates, Planned Parenthood Federation of America(PPFA) works to ensure that every person has equitable access to the careand information they need to lead their best, healthiest lives.ON THE GROUNDIn 2015, 2.4 million people relied on approximately 650 Planned Parenthood healthcenters for affordable, high-quality reproductive health services. Planned Parenthood healthcenters have continued to provide care to all people — regardless of gender identity, genderexpression, and/or sexual orientation. As a reliable source for nonjudgmental health care,Planned Parenthood health centers are expanding services to provide more care to trans peopleand men. In fact, men comprise 11% of Planned Parenthood’s patients across the country. For many patients, Planned Parenthood is their only source of care and our healthcenters are an irreplaceable component of our country’s health care system. PlannedParenthood may look different in the coming years, depending on what happens inWashington and state capitols across the country, but Planned Parenthood affiliatesare determined to continue serving as many people as possible, no matter whatanti-women’s health politicians throw our way. We will be relentless in our fight forequitable access to reproductive health care and rights.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 07

ONLINEIN COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDEThrough technology, we are breakingdown systemic barriers to accessingreproductive health care and informationby making it more timely, relevant, andequitable for all people. In addition to themore than 76 million visits to PlannedParenthood websites each year, ourOnline Health Services (OHS) program isreaching more people than ever before.Planned Parenthood is the country’s largestprovider of sex education. Our programsreach 1.5 million people in schools, community centers, correctional facilities, faith spaces, and more every year. O HS expanded into threenew states this year, bringing ourtotal up to six states that areproviding care through onlinehealth services. W e also added new servicesavailable to patients via OHS,including access to emergencycontraception, counselingfor long-acting, reversiblecontraception (like IUDs andimplants), and treatment forurinary tract infections. With support from PPFA, PlannedParenthood affiliates are alsoexpanding access to safe and legalabortion for people in remote andrural communities.08 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORTWe produced and launched our “Consent101” online video series in September2015. The videos explain and model whatconsent is and what it looks like in differentsituations. They are geared toward olderteens and young adults, and are inclusiveof diverse sexual orientations, races, andethnicities. The videos have been viewedmore than 380,000 times on YouTubeand won a 2016 People’s Voice WebbyAward in Public Service and Activism. In October 2015, we published the resultsof a national survey, which found thatshockingly few young people receive anyeducation about sexual consent.

AROUND THE WORLDWith the support of Planned ParenthoodGlobal, partners in 12 focus countriesreached over 1.5 million clients withreproductive health information andservices this year, including more than350,000 people reached through in-personeducational activities and more than230,000 people through the innovativeand award-winning Global Mobile sites. In November 2015, Planned ParenthoodGlobal published a new report called“Stolen Lives” and launched a campaignto document the dire physical, mental, andsocial health consequences of forcedpregnancy on girls. A long-term goal is tobuild the case for expanding abortionaccess under these circumstances inEcuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Peru.In Burkina Faso, Planned ParenthoodGlobal supported partners to engage withreligious leaders who hold great influenceover public opinion, to increase supportfor sexual and reproductive health andrights. As a result, an interfaith union oftraditional and religious leaders made upof imams, pastors, priests, and chiefstook part in trainings and becamespokespeople for the value of familyplanning, getting published in numerousnational news outlets, and reachingthousands across traditional, religious, and rural communities.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 09

04FIGHTING BACK ANDMOVING FORWARDDay in and day out, Planned Parenthood affiliates open their health center doorsto provide lifesaving care, despite politically driven attacks designed to blockpatients from accessing the care they need. Thanks to our dedicated nationaland affiliate staff, we have been able to beat back these attacks so PlannedParenthood can continue to be there for the millions who rely on us every year.THE ATTACKSIn July 2015, anti-abortion extremists began releasing heavily edited undercover videosof Planned Parenthood officials and providers. In investigation after investigation by themedia, the medical community, and forensic experts, their allegations were widelyand resoundingly discredited. But as we know all too well, anti-women’s health politicianswill jump at any opportunity — no matter how baseless — to attack our organization.Following the attack by extremists, anti-women’s health politicians in Congress voted ninetimes to block access to Planned Parenthood and 24 states took legislative and administrativeaction to eliminate Planned Parenthood health centers from being eligible for reimbursementsthrough Medicaid and/or participating in the Title X program and other publicly fundedhealth programs. When extreme politicians vow to “defund” Planned Parenthood, they aretalking about cutting off at least 1.5 million Planned Parenthood patients who rely onthese programs to access preventive care from their provider of choice. Those whowould be hurt the most would be the people who already face barriers to accessing healthcare — people of color, people with low incomes, and people who live in rural areas.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 11

Colorado SpringsAt the end of November 2015, a gunman attacked a Planned Parenthood healthcenter in Colorado Springs, and three people were tragically killed. Thanks to thebravery of local law enforcement and the Colorado Springs health center staff, many lives were also saved that day.On December 5, we held a National Day of Solidarity in Colorado Springs andWashington, DC, with 51 satellite events taking place around the country on thesame day. Our message was clear: These doors stay open.OUR SUCCESSWe fought every attack — and we won. 1 0 states saw officials back down, veto, or fail to pass legislation to cut patientsoff from care at Planned Parenthood. 1 3 states investigated claims that Planned Parenthood profited from fetal tissuedonation, and each one cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing. 9 states were successful in eliminating Planned Parenthood from public healthprograms legislatively, but in only 1 state was legislation able to take effect. P PFA, Planned Parenthood affiliates, and our partners filed 8 suits againstlegislative and administrative actions to block access to care at PlannedParenthood. To date, we have blocked these actions in every single case andprotected access to the care Planned Parenthood health centers provide.12 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Our success in overcoming these attacks on women’s health was due in no small part toPlanned Parenthood supporters, partners, and activists — many of whom self-identify asPlanned Parenthood patients — who rallied behind us. We gained 750,000 new supporters between July 2015 and June 2016. 1 4 national polls showed strong public support for Planned Parenthoodand the services we provide. W e declared September 29, 2015, our first National Pink Out Day — a day ofaction during which 285 events took place nationwide in solidarity withPlanned Parenthood. In total, more than 3,000 community events were heldin our support in the months following the undercover video campaign.Whole Woman’s Health v. HellerstedtThe reproductive health movement had a major victoryin the June 2016 Supreme Court case Whole Woman’sHealth v. Hellerstedt. The highest court in the land struckdown two restrictions in Texas’s HB2 law — which placeddangerous and medically unnecessary restrictions onwomen’s health care providers — because they eachimposed an unconstitutional, undue burden on womentrying to access safe, legal abortion. Within the sameweek, three similar laws fell across the country.Regardless of what our opponents claim about us, howstate legislators attack reproductive health and rights, orwho is leading our country, Planned Parenthood’s missionremains the same. Today’s political climate makes our hillsteeper than it was before, but we’re still climbing towardand the same thing: health equity for all.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 13

05ADVANCINGCARE THROUGHINNOVATIONAs we move forward — and grow stronger than ever — Planned Parenthoodis committed to advancing reproductive health care and rights on all fronts.RESEARCHAfter Margaret Sanger’s Brooklyn birth control clinic was shuttered, she opened the firstlegal birth control clinic several years later in Manhattan, calling it the Clinical ResearchBureau — an active clinic that also conducted birth control research in a real-world setting.Nearly one hundred years later, Planned Parenthood is continuing this legacy throughan enhanced focus on innovative research and quality improvement at the national andaffiliate levels to advance reproductive health and promote health equity. We are leaders in pursuing new improvements to reproductive health care. In a single year,Planned Parenthood participates in more than 70 research studies on topics rangingfrom long-acting reversible contraception to HPV vaccine completion. In addition to usingnew evidence to improve our practices, we disseminate our findings to other leadersin the reproductive health field through peer-reviewed publications and presentationsat conferences.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 15

STORYTELLINGThis year, we executive-produced Across the Line, an immersive virtual reality experiencethat places viewers in the shoes of a patient entering a health center for a safe and legalabortion. Combining real audio gathered at protests, scripted scenes, and documentaryfootage, the film is a powerful hybrid documentary-fiction depiction of the toxicenvironment that many volunteers, staff, and patients must endure to provide or accesshealth care on a typical day. Across the Line premiered at Sundance Film Festival andwas accepted at South by Southwest and the Cleveland International Film Festival. It wasalso recognized at the Media Impact Festival, and won the People’s Choice Awardand a prize from Time Warner at the 2016 Future of Storytelling Festival.16 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

It also provides guidance, tips, and fun facts from Planned Parenthoodexperts and can connect users directly to local health centers. The app was designed with input from hundreds of real testers. I t’s for anyone who has a period — Spot On does not make assumptions abouta person’s gender or sexual orientation. The app was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in its first three months.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 17

06FUELING THEMOVEMENTPARTNERS IN JUSTICECreating the world we want would be impossible without centering the voices of women ofcolor and reproductive justice leaders. We have continued to work closely with reproductivejustice organizations to build and strengthen partnerships and collaborations, reinforcing ourcapacity to contribute to a powerful, intersectional movement toward reproductive freedom. These partnerships enhance and advance the progressive agenda and allow Planned Parenthoodto be a meaningful ally in immigration reform, racial justice, and economic justice issues. In September 2015, Planned Parenthood Action Fund partnered with BET/Centric, EMILY’sList, and Higher Heights for America to amplify the voices of Black women elected officials, leaders, and community members at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annuallegislative conference. PPFA also sponsored the second annual #TrustBlackWomenconvening in October where reproductive justice organizations and leaders from acrossthe country met to build a national strategy to combat anti-abortion advocacy, specificallyanti-abortion tactics that target Black women.Through initiatives like the Latino Community Investment Grants, PPFA is working with affiliatesto build closer ties with Latino and immigrant communities. By re-granting funds awarded byPPFA, affiliates are able provide support to local community organizations. This support aimsto help develop stronger or new partnerships to engage Latino and immigrant communitiesin our health center services, reproductive health education, and organizing trainings andmobilizations — furthering strategic supporter engagement in our communities. We hope togrow our base of supporters and patients in Latino and immigrant communities by empoweringthem to access our services and education, and become advocates of reproductive justice.18 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

ENGAGING YOUTHToday’s young people are the most diverse and progressive we’ve ever seen, and we’repreparing them to take the lead in this movement through both PPFA’s Generation (PPGen)and Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s Generation Action (PPGenAction) programs.PPGen and PPGenAction are coalitions of young people across identities and issuesthat organize with, by, and for their generation in order to achieve reproductive freedom. They have more than 300 campus groups across the country. The key priorities are: E nsuring inclusivity in the reproductive health movement, particularly as it relatesto trans people; Fighting abortion stigma; Ending campus sexual assault; Working toward a progressive policy agenda from the local level up to the federal; and Building people powerWe are confident that young people will drive and create the change this movementand this country need — Planned Parenthood is excited to help them along the way.In May 2016, Planned Parenthood Action Fund hosted the first-ever Power of Pinkconference in Pittsburgh — its largest volunteer leadership membership event ever —where nearly 1,000 young activists strengthened their organizing and advocacyskills to make progress for sexual and reproductive health, rights, and freedom.2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT 21
