Position 4strips are used twice. In the graphics it look as though you should cut Position 4 from the same fabric.When making the shaded nine patch star position 4 strip colors bump up next to each other. Therefore,it is better to choose 6 fabrics so you will have 2 fabrics for position 4 strip and a background.Background Fabric: (Aside from the rectangles in the chart above)Cut 4 – 6 ½” squares for the star corners.If Using Layer Cakes: 12 – 10” squares yields enough strip sets for 12 – 6” finished Shaded 9Patch units. Step 1 – Each block requires two strip sets. You will need to make twice as many of the FirstStrip Set as you will the Second Strip Set.Piecing the First Strip Set – take onestrip each of the fabrics for position1, 2 and 3. Sew them together alongthe long edge, right sides together inthe order shown. Press all seamstoward position 3.Position 1Position 2Position 3Piecing the Second Strip Set – take onestrip for position 5 and two strips offabric for position 4. Step 2 – For the First Strip Set only – sub-cutcrosswise the width of the strip for Position 1.We are making a 6” finished unit, Position 1strip is 2 ¾” wide, you will sub cut your sections2 ¾” wide.Sub-cut 12 – 2 ¾ wide Strip Set 1”unitsStudio 180 Design Certified Instructor, Jackie O’Brien, Email sewjackie@live.com4

Step 3 – Stitch the strip set units together. Lay them out as shown. Seams will nest betweenpositions 1 & 4.Row 11Row 243Row 3325421Before you press, you will need to snip the seam allowance in two places as shown. Step 4 – Select a ruler with a long 45 degree angle marked on it. The edge of your ruler needsto be at least as long as the diagonal of the unit.Place you’re your sewn rectangle right side down, horizontally on your work surface anddraw a 45 degree line from top to bottom, through the corners of the squares labeled 2 and4 where the stitching lines meet.Draw a second 45 degree linethrough the corner of the otherposition 2 and 4 squares.Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor, Jackie O’Brien, Email sewjackie@live.com7

Step 5 – Center each marked unit over a large rectangle, right sides together. They may notbe exactly the same size.Step 6 – Stitch on both of the marked sewing lines. Cut apart.Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor, Jackie O’Brien, Email sewjackie@live.com8

Press toward the large triangle. Remember, whatever you are pressing toward,goes on top!Step 7 – Position the 6 ½” sizing diagonal of your Tucker Trimmer on the unit so that it lines upwith the diagonal seam line of the Shaded Nine Patch.Position the common diagonal so it passes through the center of position 1 square. Step 8 – Rotate the unit and line up the 6 ½” size lines on the Tucker Trimmer with thetrimmed raw edges. Adjust as needed. Trim both sides.Make five more sets for a total of 12 blocks.Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor, Jackie O’Brien, Email sewjackie@live.com10

Making 3 Color Quarter Square TrianglesInner Border 3 Color Quarter Square Triangles:Background: Cut 2 – 4 ½” WOF strips, sub-cut into 16 – 4 ½” squares. Mark sewing lines on the 16 – 4 ½” background squares using the Magic Wand.From the 6 fabric colors cut a variety of 16 – 4 ½” squares. Pair with the 16 Background – 4 ½” squares, Stitch on lines and cut apart making 32 HalfSquare Triangles (HST). Press toward the dark trianglePair the HST’s into 16 sets so they have different colors. Mark sewing lines on one of the pair’sback with the Magic Wand as before. Position on HST’s so background color is opposite each other, right sides together, nestingthe seams. Stitch – Cut apart, swirl the seams and press.
