The love ofreading, book illustrationand storytelling is whatinspired his career in thisfield.His poems and cartoonsdelighted young readers inhis fi rst book “Zoom CatZoom,” and he moved tohis next two books as theillustrator of “Ice CreamDreams” and “Crazy OldAunt Helen.”Matheney recently wrote“What The Hawk Saw” andconducted his fi rst readingwhere his career began — atthe Putnam County Library.Matheney’s father, JarvisMatheney, ran the PutnamDrive-In and Lewis’s loveand passion for the Drive-inhas never waivered from hismemory.This love has promptedLewis to open a museumin Downtown Cookevilleat 39 W. 6 HERALD-CITIZENTASTE OF THE TOWNSUNDAY, MAY 12, 2019herald-citizen.comCityScape: Preserving historic downtownHistoric Cream City Sign2018 Grants And AccomplishmentsBROAST AWNING GRANTCityScape awarded Broast, a coffeeroasting business, an awning grantthat was awarded after a completerenovation of a formerly unoccupiedbuilding on Spring Street.Broast Awning GrantRESTORING, MAINTAINING AND OPERATINGTHE CREAM CITY SIGNCityScape has assumed the soleresponsibility of preserving the historic Cream City sign and keeping itoperational so that Cookeville mightenjoy its charm for years to come.However, the cost of often hard-tofi nd replacement parts and bulbs,as well as the electricity required toregularly light the sign, is substantial.To help cover these expenses, CityScape hosted a fundraiser at CreamCity Ice Cream in August.For the event, a portion of BroadStreet was blocked off, and participants enjoyed bounce houses, kids’activities, a dunking booth, commemorative T-shirt sales and specialpricing on ice cream.
