How It WorksName ofProgramIconindicatingsectorClick onlogo tolink to ProgramInformationThe purpose of this eBook is to provide Rhode Islanders with basic informationon the types of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programs available inRhode Island. Each sector will have its own icon (as presented on the Table of Contentspage). Programs shown under each sector icon have offerings for theindicated sector. There are logos presented on the programs to illustrate the providers of theprogram. Information, including the providers, incentives, eligibilities, deadlines, etc.is shown next to each program. Key Terms*Click on word to link to sourceIncentiveA campaign inwhich the morepeople who signup for a program, the lower the costis for everybodyAn action orsomething that incitesor tends to inciteto action or greatereffort, as a rewardoffered for increasedproductivity sharingTieredCampaign(FIT) is a policy mechanism designedto encourage the adoption ofrenewable energy sources. It typicallyincludes three key provisions: 1)guaranteed grid access, 2) long-termcontracts for the electricity produced, and 3) purchase prices that aremethodologically based on the cost ofrenewable energy generation. Under afeed-in tariff, an obligation is imposedon regional or national electricityutilities to buy renewable electricityfrom all eligible participants.Feed-InTariffNetMeteringAct of giving money, property or other materialgoods to another partyin exchange for futurerepayment of theprincipal amount alongwith interest and/or otherfinance chargesTaxCreditGrantAn amountof money ataxpayer is ableto subtract fromtaxes owed tothe government.LoanA government grant is afinancial award given bythe federal, state or localgovernment to an eligiblegrantee. Government grantsare not expected to be repaidand do not include technicalassistance or other financialassistance, such as a loan orloan guarantee, an interest ratesubsidy, direct appropriation, orrevenue sharingMoney that isreturned to youafter you pay forgoods or services, done in order tomake the sale moreattractive.RebatePerformanceBasedIncentiveA billing mechanism that creditssolar energy system owners forthe electricity they add to thegrid. For example, if a residentialcustomer has a PV system on thehome’s rooftop, it may generatemore electricity than the homeuses during daylight hours. If thehome is net-metered, the electricitymeter will run backwards to providea credit against what electricity isconsumed at night or other periodswhere the home’s electricity useexceeds the system’s output.(PBI) are incentives that arepaid based on the actualenergy production of the solarsystem. Typically these are paidbased on an energy ( /kWh)basis over a period of time. Thisis different from the approachwhere a one-time rebate isprovided. Feed-in tariffs (FIT)are a common type of PBI.Virtual net metering (VNM)is a bill crediting system forcommunity solar. It refers towhen solar is not used onsite but is instead externallyinstalled and shared amongsubscribers. In this case, you receive credits onyour electric bill for excessenergy produced by yourshare of a solar garden.VirtualNetMetering5
