General InformationThe TOEFL Essentials test measures academic andgeneral English skills using a multistage adaptivedesign.The test is available to everyone who is properlyregistered, regardless of race, color, creed or nationalorigin (subject to U.S. sanctions and embargoes).The TOEFL Essentials TestThe TOEFL Essentials test takes about 1 ½ hours tocomplete and has 4 scored sections and the PersonalVideo Statement: Listening measures your ability to understandconversations and talks set in academic, personal,and public contexts – approximately21–34 minutes; 30–45 questions Reading measures your ability to understand bothacademic and non-academic texts – approximately22–33 minutes; 30–45 questions Writing measures your ability to write, review, andedit texts in English for different communicationpurposes, such as emails and online discussions– approximately 24–30 minutes; 15–19 questionsand 2 tasks Speaking measures your ability to speak andcommunicate effectively in a variety of situations –approximately 13 minutes; 3 tasks with 9 responses Personal Video Statement allows you toshare additional insights about yourself andshowcase your unique personality to institutions –approximately 5 minutes; 2 questionsThe test you take may include extra questions in theListening and Writing sections, or the Reading section,that do not count toward your score. These questionsare used to make scores comparable across testadministrations, or they may be new questions beingused to determine how they will function in an actualtesting environment.After completing the scored portions of the test, youwill record a Personal Video Statement respondingto 2 questions in English. The recorded responsesare not scored. The first question is always, “Whatwould you like to tell people about yourself?” For thesecond question, you will choose 1 of 2 randomlyselected topics and give your opinion. Completing theunscored video takes about 5 minutes.The test can be taken at home from almost anywherein the world with a reliable internet connection. Beforeyou register for the test verify you meet the equipmentand environment requirements.Test Preparation To get an idea of the different types of questionson the test, try the free practice test, available atwww.ets.org/toefl/essentials/prepare.Test Takers with Disabilities orHealth-related Needs Testing accommodations are available for testtakers with disabilities or health-related needswho meet ETS requirements. If you are requestingaccommodations, you must have them approvedbefore you can register for the test. If seeking accommodations, submit your requestas early as possible. Documentation review takesapproximately four to six weeks once your requestand complete paperwork have been received atETS. The 2021-22 Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers withDisabilities or Health-Related Needs contains contactinformation, a list of some of the accommodationsETS most frequently approves and provides, andprocedures for requesting them. The Supplementshould be used together with this Bulletin. Registration Information (continued)Your ETS AccountOnline You will need to create an ETS account, if you don’talready have one. You’ll create an account profile. Be sure tocomplete all the required sections; they arehighlighted with an asterisk(*). The information youprovide will be kept completely confidential. Provide the identifying information and answer thebackground questions. Create your user name and password and selectyour security questions and answers. Confirm your profile— you’ll see a confirmationpage showing all the information you submitted. Your account is not transferable. Once you enter your name and date of birth,you can’t change those fields. Make sure theinformation you enter exactly matches theidentification (ID) document you will present onthe day of the test If you need to make a name change, contact TOEFLServices (see page 6) before you take the test.By phone Your account will be created for you using theinformation you give us over the phone. Once your account has been created, you will besent an email that includes a user name and atemporary password. Log in to your account using your user name andthe temporary password – you will be prompted tochange your password.Services available through your accountYou will be able to: register for the test view your test appointment details cancel or reschedule your test view scores and orders download and print a PDF copy of your test takerscore report order score reports and other services update the information in your profile pay an outstanding balanceHow to RegisterNo matter which registration method you use, read thefollowing information in this Bulletin: “Important Things to Know When You Register” onpage 10 “Your ETS Account” on this pageOnline Registration is available 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek. See page 12 for information on payment methodsand policies. Regular online registration closes 7 full days beforethe test date. Late online registration closes 2 daysbefore the test date. Late phone registration isavailable until close of business on the day beforethe test. The late registration fee is US 20 six daysprior to the test date. Be sure to keep your order confirmation email safeuntil test day, because it contains the link to startyour test.By phone You can register by phone using a credit/debitcard, or an electronic check (e-check) in U.S. dollars.See “Payment Policies” on page 13. Regular phone registration closes 7 full days beforethe test date. Late phone registration is availableuntil close of business on the day before the test.The late registration fee is US 20. When you call, we will give you an appointmentnumber. Be sure to write the number down incase you need it to contact TOEFL Services for anyreason. You will also be given your test date andtime. If you want to designate score recipients when youregister, have the codes for the institutions readywhen you call. Codes are available on the TOEFLwebsite. Check the registration form atwww.ets.org/toefl/essentials/reg-form to seewhat other information you will need when you call.By mail You can register by mail with the test registrationform, which is available for download atwww.ets.org/toefl/essentials/reg-form. Enter all the information on the form. Be sure toindicate 4 test dates and time choices. Include credit/debit card information, or a check ormoney order in U.S. dollars. For more details,see “Payment Policies” on page 13. You can also use Western Union Quick PaySM –when you complete the form, use the followingunder “Pay To:” Company Name: EducationalTesting Service; City Code: TOEFLPROGRAMNJ;Country: U.S.A. You must send the original receiptmarked “Agent’s Copy” with your form. Copies,facsimiles or receipts marked “Customer’s Copy”cannot be accepted. Mail the completed form to the address shownon the form, or to the appropriate RRC for yourlocation (see www.ets.org/toefl/essentials/contact). The form must be received at least 4weeks before your earliest test date choice.10 You will be assigned a test date and time based onthe information you provide on the form. If we cannot register you for one of the datesyou request, you will be scheduled for the nextavailable test date unless you indicate on the formthat you don’t want to be rescheduled. If youchoose not to be rescheduled, your payment willbe returned. If you are rescheduled, we will assign you a testdate and time as close as possible to your choices.If you can’t take the test on the assigned date,contact TOEFL Services or the appropriate RRCwithin 24 hours after you receive confirmationof your new appointment. You’ll be able toreschedule one time without paying thereschedule fee. If you do not receive confirmation of yourregistration, call the location where you mailedyour form at least 3 full business days beforethe registration deadline for your earliest test datechoice.Important Things to Know WhenYou Register Information regarding test date availability issubject to change. The most current informationregarding test dates and other registrationinformation is available online through your ETSaccount. During registration, you can select up to 20 scorerecipients. See “Choosing Score Recipients” onpage 11. Register early; test dates can fill up quickly. Take the test as soon as possible so your scoreswill be received in time to be considered with yourapplication(s). Registration is not transferable. You can’t letsomeone else use your test appointment. Return to your ETS account the day before yourtest to check your appointment details.
