GENERAL INFORMATIONHISTORYUniversidad del Sagrado Corazón (Sagrado) had its origins in the elementary schoolestablished in 1880 by the Religious of the Sagrado Heart, in the city of San Juan. Later,at the beginning of the 20th century, they acquired the property of the Count ofSanturce and established themselves on the grounds that today form the universitycampus. The institutional development is reflected in the following historicalmilestones: In 1935 the government of the Island issued the Charter of Foundation, by virtueof which Colegio Universitario del Sagrado Corazón was established. Four yearslater, in 1939, it conferred its first academic degrees. Sagrado was originallyfounded as an educational center for young ladies with the purpose of helpingPuerto Rican women achieve a broad culture, not only for their personalenrichment but also for the benefit of the country. In 1970 a new stage in its history began. The Religious chose to cede theownership and governance of the Institution to a Board of Trustees composedmainly of lay members. The dynamics of growth intensified notably, both inacademic offerings and in the number of students. In February 1972, the Board of Trustees approved that the University woulddefinitively adopt the character of a co-educational institution open to thePuerto Rican community. In December 1976, the Board of Trustees officially authorized the use of thename Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. In 1985 the University established the first three graduate programs leading tothe Master's degree in Business Administration, Communication and Education. In 1990, a curriculum review was initiated to promote more personalizededucation and greater interaction between students and teachers. Currently, the University reaffirms its founding charism and its commitment toserve Puerto Rico by completing a process of curricular review of all its academicofferings, which incorporates differentiated elements in the curricula andexpands the teaching-learning experiences.MISSIONThe mission of the University, as a Catholic institution, is to educate people inintellectual freedom and moral conscience, willing to participate in the construction ofa more authentically Christian Puerto Rican society: a community in solidarity withjustice and peace.www.sagrado.edu Catalog 2020-21 University of the Sagrado Heart 8
