In the midstof the COVID-19 pandemic, we transitioned to a life lived primarilyat home, to online classes and Zoom meetings. We limited time withloved ones living elsewhere. News updates were often uncertain andscary as we navigated unprecedented times.That’s why we at the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation are proud, nowmore than ever, to bring you our annual donor report, filled withgood news and things to be thankful for. 62020 Donor Report2020 Donor Report7COVID-19 Emergency Relief FundNavigating the COVID-19 health care crisis throughout 2020 taught us a great deal as anorganization, but more than anything, it taught us that we are capable of persevering throughunprecedented difficulties, and your support is a critical part of that. We said it many timesthroughout the last year, but we have been able to do incredible things during this challengingtime thanks to the generosity of donors like you. As we move into 2021 and look forward tobrighter days to come, it’s important for us to reflect on all we accomplished together thanksto our generous donors who supported us during our time of need with a gift to the COVID-19Emergency Relief Fund.Because of you, we have:» Purchased iPads so patients can stay connected with their loved ones, even from a distance» Provided prenatal home monitoring kits for expecting mothers to assist with remoteprenatal checkups, ensuring safe and healthy pregnancies» Distributed care kits to patients to lift their spirits» Supported our incredible frontline staff with numerous stress management resources to helpthem as they care for patients during this difficult time, and let them know how appreciatedthey truly are» And much more!The outpouring of support we have seen from our community as we navigate this trying timehas been incredible, and as we continue to work through this together, we are grateful for allyou have helped us accomplish.HELPING HANDS FUNDThe UPMC Pinnacle social services team has had a fund supportingtheir efforts for many years, but in 2020, it received a new name thatbest encompasses their compassionate work — the Helping HandsFund. Those already struggling to make ends meet were affectedmost of all by the COVID-19 crisis, and throughout the year, the socialservices team worked hard to help patients meet their basic needs,whatever they might be.Gifts to the Helping Hands Fund might help to cover medication costsfor a patient who can’t otherwise afford it, provide transportationhome for a patient who doesn’t have a ride, or even help to providehousing solutions or food resources for patients in need.“I so want to thank [the Social Services team] for all [they] havedone for me,” a patient wrote after a UPMC Pinnacle social workerhelped her quickly access insurance after her pharmacy wouldn’t fillher life-sustaining medications. “If not for [their] super knowledge,understanding of what I was going through, I would have been interrible shape. From the bottom of my heart, I’m so grateful.”
82020 Donor Report2020 Donor ReportHOPE for theFUTUREOpening of new pediatric unitIn November 2020, UPMC Pinnacle unveiled thenew UPMC Children’s Harrisburg inpatient unit,bringing UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’snationally ranked specialty care to the southcentralPA community.“Since Pinnacle hospitals were merged into theUPMC network in 2017, UPMC has invested 910million to the hospitals to elevate the level of carewe provide. This reinvestment, including our new 12 million UPMC Children’s Harrisburg, representsUPMC’s commitment to offering world-class careto the people of southcentral Pennsylvania,” saidPhilip Guarneschelli, president, UPMC Pinnacle.UPMC Children’s Harrisburg, a 26-bed unit,includes 11 new, private rooms each designed foruniversal use, meaning children stay in one roomthroughout their hospital stay and the appropriatelevel of care is brought to them.Designed with families in mind, the inpatient unitalso includes:» Age-appropriate furniture, activity tables, andcomputerized interactive displays for toddlers,school-age children, and teens.» A lounge to serve as a respite area for parentswhile their children are in the hospital.» Dedicated, trained child life specialists to supportpatients’ psychosocial and developmental needsby working with patients one-on-one and ingroup activities in coordination with providersand families. 122020 Donor Report2020 Donor Report13It is times like thiswhen we mustDIG DEEPERto help ourcommunity.— Meron Yemane, board chair, UPMC Pinnacle FoundationCARING FOR OUR NEIGHBORSUPMC Pinnacle is committed to serving thecentral PA community, and throughout 2020,we had the occasion to meet the unique needscreated by the difficulties of the pandemic.One way the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation metthose needs was with a 100,000 gift to theCentral PA Food Bank in June 2020 in supportof COVID-19 relief efforts. The funds helped theCentral PA Food Bank meet the 43% increase incommunity need during the pandemic, helping tofund the delivery of 400,000 pounds of food byHarrisburg City Police during the shutdown.“At UPMC, it is our mission to serve ourcommunity. We realize that access to food andgood nutrition are integral components of goodhealth,” said Philip Guarneschelli, president,UPMC Pinnacle, at the time of the gift. “Thisdonation will go directly toward alleviating theincreasing food insecurity in our community.”of more than 350,000 deaths a year, but earlybystander response, including police intervention,often saves lives.“It is times like this when we must dig deeperto help our community,” said Meron Yemane,board chair, UPMC Pinnacle Foundation. “As wehave spent more time at home recently, we arereminded that the time spent around the dinnertable is when families are built and bonded,and our hope is that this gift provides thatopportunity to many families in the region.”Valued at 40,500, this donation was madepossible by proceeds from the 3.2 To Protect theBlue hosted last September by UPMC nurses.Working with The Peyton Walker Foundation,the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation matched eventproceeds to support the purchase of the AEDsas well as ensure future required equipmentmaintenance.In October 2020, the UPMC Pinnacle Foundationpartnered with the Peyton Walker Foundationto donate 18 AEDs (automated externaldefibrillators) to the Harrisburg City PoliceDepartment. Sudden cardiac arrest is the cause“UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg EmergencyDepartment nurses know the best way toimprove chances of survival for victims of suddencardiac arrest is early defibrillation,” said KathyHogan Flinn, director of emergency nursing,UPMC Pinnacle. “When they learned that theHarrisburg City Police only had two AEDs for theentire department, our nurses chose to directproceeds to ensure our fellow first respondershad the equipment needed to provide timely lifesaving care in an emergency.”Health and wellness doesn’t stop at the hospital,and the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation is proud tohave made these gifts to benefit the central PAcommunity.
