WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE YEARSOnce they graduate from the PYP, students at Ambassador International Academy embark on their journeythrough the middle years with the Middle Years Programme of the IB. The approach remains inquiry-based andstudent-led.The MYP has been designed as a coherent and comprehensive curriculum framework that provides academicchallenge and develops the life skills of students from the ages of 11 to 16. It encourages students to makepractical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further studyand in life. The MYP is a five-year programme, which can be implemented in several abbreviated (two, three or four year)formats. At Ambassador International Academy students have a choice and may take the MYP as Year 1 - 3 or asYear 1 - 5, depending on whether they opt for MYP in Grades 6 - 10 or MYP in Grades 6 - 8 and IGCSEs in Grades9 and 10.School DayOverviewThe school week runs fromSunday to Thursday:Grade 6 to Grade 107.40am - 8.00am8.00am - 9.30am9.30am - 10.00am10.00am - 12.15pm12.15pm - 1.00pm1.00pm - 2.30pm2.30pm - 3.30pm2Arrival and assemblyLessons commence (45 minutes each)Snack timeLessons resumeLunch timeLessonExtra Curricular Activities (Sunday to Wednesday)

Middle Years CurriculumThe MYP curriculum framework allows schools to meet national, state, provincial or other subject-specificcurricular requirements while fulfilling the IB mission and implementing the IB philosophy. The MYP is flexibleenough to accommodate most national or local curriculum requirements. It builds upon the knowledge, skills andattitudes developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares students to meet the academicchallenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP).All IB programme models highlight important shared features of an IB education.Developing the attributes of the learner profileApproaches to teaching and approaches to learningAge-appropriate culminating experiencesAn organised and aligned structure of subject groups or disciplinesDevelopment of international-mindedness as a primary aim and context for learningIn an MYP classroom, students are at the centre of learning. They make connections between all subject areas andlearning is explicitly linked to the world around them. Participation in a foreign language is required. A variety offormal and informal assessments are used to inform teaching and learning. MYP learning experiences includeglobal points of view wherever possible in order to promote understanding of other cultures, an awareness of thehuman condition and an understanding that there is a commonality of human experience.3

Middle Years CurriculumThe Middle Years Programme (MYP) helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinaryunderstanding. The MYP Curriculum Framework includes:Approaches to learning (ATL), helping students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical andcreative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management;Key and related concepts, helping students explore big ideas that matter. Through these students explore ideasand issue that are significant globally;Global contexts, helping students understand the relevance and importance of their study for understandingtheir common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet;Service as action (community service) and Action (learning by doing and experiencing). Students take actionwhen they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond;Language and identity – MYP students are required to learn at least two languages;Inclusion and differentiation;Subject groups: The MYP consists of eight subject groups. Student study is supported by a minimum of 50hours of instruction per subject group in each academic year. The eight subject groups are:ERPLOLanguageacquisitionIndividuals& societiesLanguage& literatureExpressive ArtsEXMathematicsSciencesPhysical & HealtheducationDesignInter Disciplinary UnitThe Middle Years Programme (MYP) helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinaryunderstanding.Students demonstrate interdisciplinary understanding when they bring together concepts, methods, or forms ofcommunication from two or more disciplines or established areas of expertise so that they can explain aphenomenon, solve a problem, create a product, or raise a new question in ways that would have been unlikelythrough a single discipline.4

Middle Years CurriculumProjectThrough the Middle Years Programme (MYP) projects, students experience the responsibility of completing asignificant piece of work over an extended period of time.MYP projects encourage students to reflect on their learning and the outcomes of their work – key skills thatprepare them for success in further study, the workplace and the community.Students who complete the MYP Year 3 or Year 4 complete the community project.MYP projects are student-centred and age-appropriate, and they enable students to engage in practicalexplorations through a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection.Assessment in the MYPAssessment is integral to all teaching and learning. MYP assessment requires teachers to assess the prescribedsubject-group objectives using the assessment criteria for each subject group in each year of the programme. Inorder to provide students with opportunities to achieve at the highest level, MYP teachers develop rigorous tasksthat embrace a variety of assessment strategies.Assessment in the MYP is largely an internal process. Teachers develop. Teachers use criteria that are shared withthe students in advance. The criteria are precise, ensuring that assessment is transparent.Purpose of assessmentSupports and encourages student learningPromotes the development of critical and creative-thinking skillsPromotes positive student attitudes towards learningSets student inquiries in real world contextsPromotes the development of critical and creative-thinking skillsInforms, enhances and improves the teaching processProvides opportunity for students to exhibit transfer of skills across disciplines, such as in the personal projectand interdisciplinary unit assessmentsTypes of assessmentMYP internal assessment includes tasks, strategies and tools that are designed, developed and applied by teachersworking with students in their schools.Through effective formative assessment, teachers gather, analyse, interpret and use a variety of evidence toimprove student learning and to help students to achieve their potential. Internal (school-based) summativeassessment is part of every MYP unit. Summative assessments are designed to provide evidence for evaluatingstudent achievement using required MYP subject-group specific assessment criteria.5
