Getting Your Permit and/or LicenseStep-by-step instructions1. Get Your Permit (Optional)As an adult, you are not required to get a learner's permit before getting your driver license. However,if you want more driving practice, head to your local DPS office to apply for your permit (also knownas a learner license or driver license with B restriction). See page 3 for a list of items to bring to theDPS!At the DPS, all you have to do is show them your documents, take the vision test, and take a picturefor your permit. You've already taken the written test online with us. Your test results are marked onyour certificate and will show DPS that they should not make you take the test again.With your permit, you can practice for however long until you feel confident and ready for the drivingtest. Your permit is valid for 1 year and you do not have to hold it for a minimum amount of timebefore going for your driving test and applying for your driver license.Note: your Aceable certificate is NOT a permit.2. Complete the Impact Texas Drivers ProgramWithin 90 days of your driving exam, you'll need to complete the Impact Texas Drivers Program. It's afree 1-hour video course provided through the DPS. Click here to read more about ITD and to register.3. Schedule Your Driving TestYou can schedule your driving test appointment on the DPS website or with an approved third-partydriving school. If you choose to take your driving test with a third-party provider, they will giveyou your test result which you'll also need to take with you to the DPS when applying for your officialdriver license. If you take your driving test at the DPS, you'll stay at the office and continue there toreceive your driver license. Field Trip Preparation Overview Taking students on a field trip requires preparation on the part of teachers. Not all field trip locations are designed the same or have the same purpose.
