Later, gonfalons were adopted by Italian guilds, corporations andsub-districts. Gonfalons often include badges or coat of arms. Gonfalons areused in ceremonies at the University of Chicago, Rowan University, RutgersUniversity, Princeton University, the University of Toronto, the University of St.Thomas, and now, Southwestern College.The gonfalons displayed today represent each of the college’s six schools andthe three Higher Education Centers.

Academic CostumeTraditions of academic costume began in medieval Europe. When students inthe universities of Paris, Bologna, Oxford and Cambridge began to organize intoguilds, they developed distinctive costumes for bachelors (apprentices), masters(teachers) and doctors (teachers who had completed postgraduate study).American use has been standardized by an intercollegiate code, which takesthe Oxford costume as a starting point. The bachelor’s gown has long, pointedsleeves, and the master’s gown oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. Both areuntrimmed. The doctor’s gown has round, open sleeves, with three bars of velvetand velvet facing. The gown is normally black but some institutions have adoptedcolored gowns.The academic hood also found its beginnings in the unheated medieval classroomsof England. Its original purpose was as a head covering to provide warmth beforeit was replaced by the mortarboard. The hood is now worn around the neckand down the back and indicates both the degree held and the institution fromwhich it was granted. All hoods are black and lined in satin with the color(s) of theinstitution that conferred the wearer’s degree. The color of the velvet trimming onthe hood represents the field in which the degree was granted. 2021 Honorary Degree RecipientSalvador BarajasAlmost 50 years ago, in1974, Salvador Barajasand a group of muralistschanged the fabric ofChicanoParkforever.Before Chicano Park wasa tourist attraction forpeople all over the world,it was an underfundedcommunity park with graypillars ready to be takenover by the local and stategovernments.“There was nothing here,” Barajas said on a cloudy morning in Chicano Parkunder the Coronado Bridge. “At that time, this community was being decimatedand families were being driven out of their homes. We wanted to paint messageson these pillars to show how upset we were and we wanted to paint somethingthat celebrated our culture. This is one of the oldest Mexican and Chicanocommunities in California.”Barajas’ first brush strokes were on “Historical Mural,” which celebrates Chicanoand Latino heroes and icons. Since then, Barajas has painted three murals inChicano Park and has spent more than 50 years fighting for their historical statusand being a representative for one of the most important Chicano communitiesin the country. In 2012, Barajas was part of the team that helped restore the“Historical Mural” on 2024 Logan Ave.Barajas is one of the most represented artists in Chicano Park and at 77 years old,he is making plans on his next mural in the park, commissioned by Gente Unida,a human rights border coalition.Barajas, who was born in Nio, Sinaloa and grew up in Tijuana, moved to SanDiego in 1961 and attended a San Diego evening school to learn English. Afterfour years in the Air Force, Barajas used his G.I. benefits to enroll at Los AngelesTrade Technical College, later earning a degree in advertising design.Being a product of the community college system, Barajas says he believes in theopportunities community colleges offer to students, especially minority students.He said it is a true honor to receive an honorary degree from Southwestern Collegebecause of his strong belief in education and the power it has to change lives.4 Southwestern College 2021 Commencement Ceremony
“I think community colleges are one of the greatest things to happen to minorities,”said Barajas. “Community colleges are crucial to educating and providing jobtraining. You can get a well-paying and high-demand job as soon as you graduate.”Barajas is a living Chicano Park history book and 10 years ago he worked to put hisknowledge on paper when he helped design the “Chicano Park Mural RestorationTechnical Manual,” a manual that is part history book and part technical careinstructions for the murals.“The history of this park and this community is an incredible history,” Barajas said.“These murals and Chicano Park are a constant reminder of the power of thiscommunity and that this community will never go away.”For his meritorious contributions to human relations and fine arts, the SouthwesternCollege Governing Board grants Salvador Barajas a Southwestern Collegehonorary degree.Southwestern College 2021 Commencement Ceremony 5
