A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVETEXT OF TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK N 8 SURAKARTAIN 2017/2018 ACADEMIC YEARABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan dan kesulitansiswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif kelas X di SMK N 8 Surakata pada tahunajaran 2017/2018. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif.Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X A dan X B Seni Karawitan SMKN 8 Surakarta. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan berupa observasi daninterview. Berdasarkan rata-rata skor keseluruhan siswa yang dinilai dari empataspek, yaitu; generic structure, lexicogrammatical feature, spelling, danpunctuation, didapati bahwa kemampuan siswa kelas X Seni Karawitan dalammenulis teks deskripsi tergolong baik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwakemampuan siswa dalam menulis ejaan kosa kata yang benar masih rendah.Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teksdeskripsi tergolong baik dan kesulitan yang paling dihadapi siswa pada saatmenulis teks deskripsi adalah penulisan ejaan kosa kata yang benar danpenyusunan struktur kalimat yang benar.Kata kunci: menulis, teks deskripsi, kemampuan siswaABSTRACTThis study aims at describing the students’ ability in writing descriptivetext and describing the difficulties faced by the students of tenth grade of SMK N8 Surakarta in writing descriptive text. This study is a descriptive qualitativestudy. The subjects of this study are the students of X A and X B Karawitan class.The methods of collecting the data are observation and interview. Based on theaverage score of all the students, the ability of tenth grade students of Karawitanclass in writing descriptive text is categorized as good. The result of this studyshows that the ability of the students in writing right spelling of words is poor.The score of each student is taken from four aspects; generic structure,lexicogrammatical feature, spelling, and punctuation. The conclusion of the studyis that the ability of students in writing descriptive text is categorized as good andthe difficulty faced by the students in writing descriptive text is in writing rightspelling for words and in arranging right sentence structure.Keywords: writing, descriptive text, students’ abilityx
