March 13, 2022 Art for the MassesȄby Fr. Steve Lape Whenever I enter a Catholic church in my travels, the first thing that usually strikesme is the architecture and various styles of art inside: paintings, sculptures, icons, tapestries, relics, Stations of the Cross depictions, stained glass, and displays of varioussaints. Beautiful depictions of Christ and the saints through such art in a church can helpme feel more immediately “at home” and spiritually enlivened as I prepare for prayer andMass there. Art is always going to be a more subjective experience for everyone, since oneperson may look at a certain painting and see wonder, beauty & even a masterpiece, whilesomeone else may see it as uninspiring or even ugly. Yet, art of some kind has alwaysbeen of great importance in the Church since its earliest days, hopefully lifting up people’shearts, minds & spirits to greater heights in desiring to know Christ and follow His ways. Over the years, I’ve read various historical perspectives on the development ofart among the Christian faithful. Certain holy images have been found on walls ofcatacombs and homes of Christians where Mass was celebrated, especially those who werepersecuted for their faith during the first 3 centuries of the Church in the Roman Empire. After Christianity was legalized under Roman Emperor Constantine in the early 4thcentury, art began to flourish even more, as churches began popping up all over theempire and beyond. Early Christian artists were influenced by Roman styles of art andarchitecture, leading to the Church’s becoming a major influence on the development ofWestern art in general in the coming centuries. Of course, there were people who fought against expressions of such religious art. Many Jews since the early centuries saw such depictions of God, saints or other holyrealities as breaking the 1st CommandmentȄ“I am the Lord your God. You shall have noother gods before me.” It forbade any such graven images from being made or used. Intheir literal interpretation, such reverencing of graven images constituted idolatry. ManyMuslims are against such images. During 2 periods of the 8th & 9th centuries, theByzantine Empire banned religious art for the same reason. Many 16th century ProtestantReformers, such as John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli, also cried foul over such holy works ofart, leading to plain white walls or barren worship spaces for many different Protestantcelebrations. Such groups as these who opposed sacred art were known as iconoclasts. Yet, the Catholic Church does not see such art as idolatrous. Holy artworks are notintended to be worshipped as idols themselves, but serve as doorways into developingstronger, closer relationships with God and the community of saints & believers. When Isee, for example, statues or stained glass window images of saints in our church, I’m notonly in awe of the talent and inspiration that went into creating these works of art, but myfaith is set more on fire, as I recognize that the people represented in these images arepart of my faith family. Just like we would have photos of loved ones around our homesto serve as signs of love and family for us, sacred art in churches aid us in experiencingGod’s loveȄin the past, present & future, as we are all Church together! Also, consideringthat many people of the 1st 18 centuries after Christ couldn’t read, seeing such holy imageswas a critical teaching tool for people to learn their catechism. As stated in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (the Church’s officialdocument outlining all the necessary rules, rituals and rubrics for celebrating Mass in theRoman Catholic Church), chapter 5 highlights this: “Sacred buildings for divine worshipshould be truly worthy and beautiful and be signs and symbols of heavenly realities.Consequently, the Church constantly seeks the noble assistance of the arts and admits theartistic expressions of all peoples and regions. In fact, just as she is intent on preservingthe works of art and the artistic treasures handed down from past centuries, and, insofaras necessary, on adapting them to new needs, so also she strives to promote new works ofart that are in harmony with the character of each successive age. On account of this, incommissioning artists and choosing works of art to be admitted into a church, whatshould be required is that true excellence in art which nourishes faith and devotionand accords authentically with both the meaning and the purpose for which it isintended.” (#288Ǧ289) So, thank God for artists who help color our faith lives! 4100 Lyell Road Rochester, New York14606 Mission Statement The Parish of the Holy Family isdevoted to sharing the kingdom ofGod: making disciples throughword, worship, fellowship, serviceand love. PROǦLIFE REFLECTION Anyone who wishes to follow Memust deny himself Mt 16:24 Reflection: Lent is a season in which we prepare to celebrateChrist’s total victory over death and our share in His lifeby baptism. Death was not part of God’s original planfor us.What do I leave behind? How will I be remembered? To createa legacy, you can begin by preǦplanning your own funeral andconveying your wishes to your executor, spouse, children, andloved ones. Have you taken some time to consider this? Standing with Christ in His new life means standingagainst whatever destroys life. There are many worthy charities that hold great importance and personal connection to a family. For thatreason, if a Catholic attends church every week and holds agreat importance to have his or her life and death celebratedwith a Funeral Mass, is it not also important to consider thechurch as a possible charity for a donation? Prayer:Lord, in this Lenten season, strengthen and renewour commitment to be the people of life.Everyone can use more prayer. Anyone, regardless of age, can request a prayer forany purpose-spiritual, physical, emotionalhealth, loss of a loved one, or family problems. To activate the Prayer Tree, callthe parish office at 247-4322 with theperson’s first name and a brief descriptionof their need. Soon, many people will bepraying for your concern. Anyone whowould like to be a part of this ministry, please call the parish office. V P As you make your arrangements, please take into accountthe significance your faith has held in your life. When youdraw up your Last Will and Testament and plan for yourfuneral, remember the importance of including your churchin those plans. Your devotion to your beliefs and church canbe honored by making sure the Parish of the Holy Family islisted as one of your charities. Request that donationenvelopes be made available at your Wake and Funeral Mass. Also, when writing up the obituary for the newspaper (orwebsite), include these words: "Please consider making adonation to The Parish of the Holy Family in lieu of flowers.Remember: the legacy of your gift and gifts from family andfriends will help provide the financial strength to continuethe good works of the church you held so dear in sharing theGood News of our Lord. Take advantage of our beautiful, healthy flower and vegetable plants to help your garden grow! We have anice variety to choose from. If you like the beautiful color, but not the planting, our hanging baskets are a perfectchoice. Take a look at what we have to offer. March 20, 2022 Ǧ Third Sunday of Lent 1st Reading: Exodus 3:1Ǧ8a, 13Ǧ15 / 2nd Reading: Corinthians 10:1Ǧ6, 10Ǧ12 / Gospel: Luke 13:1Ǧ9 In this week’s Gospel Reading, through the parable which Jesus tells, He puts a premium on fruitfulness. He Does thisfirst by stressing the vineyard owner’s severe judgment of the fig tree that has continued to bear no figs. The vineyardowner is ready to remove the fig tree because it is totally unproductive. Secondly, He focuses on the importance ofbeing fruitful by underscoring the vinedresser’s unusual concern and attention to try and insure the fig tree’s futureproductivity. Both in the vineyard owner’s judgment and the vinedresser’s care, one message comes through loudand clear: fruitfulness is essential. This focus on bearing fruit takes on added importance when we recall Jesus’ last conversation with Hisdisciples in John’s Gospel. In John 15:16, Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you togo and bear fruit, fruit that will last.” Earlier in verse 8, He stated that this is the way His Father is glorified, “that youbear much fruit and become my disciples.” Clearly, as Jesus was preparing to leave His disciples and begin the ordealof His crucifixion, He did not merely discuss trivial things with them, but shared His very heart and soul. At the heart ofwhat He said was His expectations for their fruitfulness. When the subject of fruitfulness comes up, it is not unusual to see opinions vary, regarding what is meant by fruit. Some would suggest that fruitfulness is simply Christian character, others that it is Christian deeds, and still othersthat it is Christian converts. I would suggest that, to some degree, it is inclusive of all of these because the three typesof fruit mentioned are interdependent and interconnected. How does all of this fit into Lent? Lent should be both a time of pruning and of cultivation. It is the time of yearwhen we pay special attention to Christ and our relationship with Him. As we focus on Christ, and add to our lives disciplines that enhance our spiritual consciousness and receptivity to Him, it allows the Holy Spirit to begin tilling up thehardness of our hearts. Lenten missions, more frequent attendance at Mass and other celebrations, Lenten discussion group studies, and personal prayer and reflection are all means which the Holy Spirit can use to rework the dry, hard ground of our hearts. As these stony portions are broken up, and turned over, our hearts become more receptiveto the nourishing nutrients that bring about growth and fruitfulness; sacred Scripture, Christ’s Presence, and prayer toseek God’s will. Our Extended FamilyBL.
