MountainGhostWhat the Ghost would like to know is if you lived in one of the40 houses near the top of the track and you ran out of milk –or even worse beer – it could be three days before you couldget out of your house.Mount Panorama,BathurstThe Mountain Ghost spent a pleasantSunday watching the Bathurst Races, eskyat his side, Peter Brock cap on his head.No he was not at Bathurst but in his mancave in the Mountains. A long me agothe Ghost was a bit of a petrol head with alead boot, but now he suffers from gout. What is the history of this amazing racethat transforms sleepy Bathurst to the revhead capital of Australia for three days? MtPanorama is the premier racing circuit inAustralia. The road itself is open to the public at anyme outside race periods. In fact the Ghosthas driven the circuit a few mes and is agreat place to take tourists. The circuit isknown all over the world, courtesy of FoxSports and word of mouth. The track was officially opened at Easter 1938. They hadthe bike races on Easter Saturday and the first AustralianCar Grand Prix in NSW was on Easter Monday. The track itself is 6.213 km long, the highest point is870 metres above sea level (about the same height asWentworth Falls) and the steepest grade is 1 to 6.13(that’s very steep). From the bo om to the top of the mountain is 174metres. For the Bathurst 1000, crowds of over 100,000are common. In 2006, the crowd was 194,000 to watchCraig Lowndes win but most were there to see thefarewell race for Australia’s greatest driver, Peter Brock. He was known as King of the Mountain. What the Ghost would like to know is if you lived in oneof the 40 houses near the top of the track and you ranout of milk – or even worse beer – it could be three daysbefore you could get out of your house. The track no longer hosts bike races as it is consideredtoo dangerous for both riders and spectators because ofthe lack of “run-off ” areas. In the history of races at Bathurst (both car and bike) 16people have died plus two spectators.World Champion driver Denny Hulme suffered a fatalheart a ack while behind the wheel in 1992.It is as dangerous as it looks. In 2006, former WorldChampion FI driver Jensen Bu on drove the track ina FI car unofficially breaking all lap record and he saidit would make a wonderful Grand Prix track but therewould need to be significant change made.Goondiwindiargus.com.auThe lap record stands at 2m 01.5670 set by Shane Van Gisbergenin a McLaren 650S GT3 in February 2016. The lap record forTouring Cars (V8s) was set this year by Sco McLaughlin at 2m04.14 with a top speed of 295kph.Mul ple winners have been Peter Brock with 9, Jim Richards 7,Larry Perkins and Mark Skaife each with 6 and Craig Lowndeswith 5.The Ghost does not understand the rivalry between Holdenand Ford but for those who do Holden has won 26 and Ford 20,Nissan 2 and Morris 1.Next to the circuit is The Na onal Racing Museum. It is a mustfor any racing enthusiast and is open every day except selectedPublic Holidays from 9.00am to 4.30pm.The Ghost visited the museum with his friends. It is one of thebest museums for anyone who loves motor sports. It has vintagebikes and cars and previous Bathurst winners. There is one wingdevoted to Peter Brock. The “Immersion Room” is worth theadmission by itself. It really gives you the experience of being inthe actual race. The Ghost keeps coming up with informa on for his readers.Mount Panorama will also officially be known as Wahluu. Thisends a 40 year campaign by the local Wiradyuri people to havetheir name for the land to be formally recognised. The Ghost hopes you liked the history of Mount Panorama andthe great race. Why not take a trip to Bathurst and drive thecircuit on race days. Just remember there is a 60 kph speedlimit Please turn to the next page
