1Getting started withMerchantCircleYou want more customers?MerchantCircle can help.You want to advertise your business online, moveup in search results and track what customers aresaying about your business. With the tools available from MerchantCircle you can do this and alot more. The following information is designed tohelp you understand some of the ways that you canuse our tools to get more customers and build yourbusiness.The BasicsMarketing your business online is all about searchresults - how can you help potential customers findinformation about your business when they searchfor local businesses in popular search engines likeGoogle, Yahoo! and Ask.Content: Search engines like content. By content wemean the online “stuff ” about your business. Content can be a webpage(s), an online review left by acustomer, a blog post, a link from another business’swebsite to your website, photos, videos, etc. It’s allcontent - and the search engines love it!When search engines look at your page, often calledindexing, it is the content that helps them understand how to classify your page and how to give ita page rank (a rating of the relevance of a specificweb page). User-generated content, or contentcreated by users as opposed to just a website builder,are seen as more credible by search engines and willimprove the ranking of your web page. Better rankings means you move up in the search results andare seen by more customers.Links: The other things the search engines like arelinks. A link between your MerchantCircle pageand your web page (if you have one) tells the searchengines that you are connected and therfore moreimportant. Links to other small businesses help thesearch engines understand what kind of page youhave so they know how to rank it relative to othersimilar pages. The more links you have the moreimportant the search engines think you are and thatmeans better page rank . which means you moveup in the search results and are seen by more customers (you are probably starting to see the trend).Creating ContentCustomers (and search engines) like to see updatedinformation about your business. This includes contact information, business address, hours of operation and so on. The best web pages have a variety ofgreat content about the busines that helps their pagerank and gets them seen by more customers.There are several ways to create content usingMerchantCircle. At MerchantCircle we track theimpact different types of content have on page rank.The following content has proven to have a dramaticimpact on page rank results. Let’s get started andhelp you build a great page!1

2 Your DashboardTo get started, login to your MerchantCircledashboard. From the home page, click on ‘MemberLogin’ located in the upper right hand corner of thescreen. This will take you to the log-in page whereyou’ll enter your e-mail address and the passwordyou’ve selected for your MerchantCircle account.Click on ‘enter your account’ and you are directedto your merchant dashboard. Your dashboard is visible only to you. It is where you create and managethe content that customers will see on your MerchantCircle listing page.The links on the left hand side direct you to specificcontent about your business. The Account Inboxcontains messages from customers, other merchantsand important system generated updates.Update Your Profile and Business InfoYour company profile and business category tellsthe search engines about your company - who youare, what you do, and keywords associated with yourtype of business. Updating your profile tells thesearch engines that something is new. It also helpsto make sure that your customers have your correctinformation.

mHere’s how to update your profile page: Login to MerchantCircle. Click ‘Customize My Website’ (left menu). Click on ‘Edit Business Profile.’ Check your contact information and make sureeverything is accurate. Include a link to your website (if you have one). Add keywords that describe your business socustomers can find you on the search engines. Click ‘Save.’Add a PhotoPhotos are great promotional tools, after all “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Use your city andtype of business as tags so search engines, and yourcustomers, can find you easily. You can add picturesto get people familiar with your business location- show them the outside of the store (if you haveone), show them some of your smiling employees,show them some of your happy cusotmers. Click ‘Add Pictures’ in top block menu (or ‘AddVideos’). Click ‘Upload’ (on bottom right corner). You can add up to 10 photos at a time; just repeatthe process for File 2, 3, 4. You don’t have to worryabout picture size because we shrink the images foryou.Create a BlogA blog is a personal online journal related to yourbusiness. It is an informal way to update customers about your business. You can use your blog todifferentiate yourself and let your personality shine.This information is tracked by the search engines soyou get more visibility on the web - plus it is a greattool to keep your customers up-to-date on newproducts, promotions or offers.Did you know that merchants who provide updatedinformation about their business more than doubletheir visibility on seaerch engines like Yahoo! andGoogle? Each word in a blog is tracked by thesearch engines so a blog gets you more attentionplus they keep your customers up-to-date. Blogposts of 1-2 paragraphs give search engines enoughcontent to help them find your page.Once you’ve created a blog, MerchantCircle helpsget your blog picked up by the major search engines- extending your reach by introducing you to morecustomers.Here’s how to add a photo (or video) to your listing: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Customize My Website (left menu). Click on ‘Create/Manage Pictures’ (or Create/Manage Videos).3

4 Here’s how to create your MerchantCircle blog: Login to MerchantCircle. Click ‘Promote My Business’ (left menu). Click ‘Create/Manage Blogs.’ Click ‘Write Blogs’ in top block menu. Add the blog title, content and keywords. Click ‘Publish’ (on bottom right corner).To make sure you get the most out of your blogactivity, use these 5 important blog tips:1. Be informative - you’re trying to create an impression that you are knowledgeable about yourbusiness. Your reputation matters so be sure tostay current and check your facts. Initial blogposts can include items like a history of yourbusiness and how you got started. Future blogposts can highlight new products and services,special events, employees, or tips for customers.2. Use keywords wisely - one of your goals is toincrease your visibility, so it is wise to use wordsthat people will use when searching for yourtype of business on the web. Each blog postshould have a title as a headline that will attractattention and be relevant to the post.3. Quantity matters - in order to attract theattnetion of search engines, you will need todevelop content with substance. A simpleheadline or single sentence is not going to grabsomeone’s attention or help get your post foundon Google or Yahoo!4. Frequency matters too - if your blog content isupdated and you add new information frequently, you can keep customers interested andsearch engines will index your pages at regularintervals.5. Grammar and spelling count - it only takes afew extra moments to check your posts beforeputting them on the web. Keep your postslooking professional and make sure there are nospelling errors or grammatical mistakes. Youcan create your content in Microsoft Word,check for spelling and grammar errors and thenpaste it into your blog.Publish a CouponCoupons drive action and are a great way to promote products to new and potential customers. It’salways a good idea to give customers (or potentialcustomers) a reason to visit your business. It’s nosurprise that giving customers valuable offers, likediscounts on their next visit, can be one of the mosteffective ways to get them to come back to yourbusiness.You can create a coupon on MerchantCircle andwe distribute them to multiple websites for you,including Google and Judy’s List. Here’s how to create a newsletter onMerchantCircle: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Promote My Business’ (left menu). Click ‘Create/Manage Newsletters.’Add the expiration date, headline and a description of the offer. Click ‘Create a Newsletter in top block menu. Add the title of your newsletter and click ‘Start.’ Add any legal disclaimers if necessary. Select a newsletter template and click ‘Next.’ You can also add a photo to your coupon. Click ‘Publish’ (bottom right hand corner).You can add a photo to your newsletter if youlike. Add the subject line for the newsletter email andadd the title of the newsletter and text for thearticles. Click next and you can add additional articles,or you can use content from your blog. Click‘Next’. Check that the contact information in the footeris correct and click next. Select who to send the newsletter to. Refer to‘How to add customers’ below. Click ‘Save.’You can also manage your coupons on MerchantCircle. Build seasonal or promotional couponsto encourage customers to check you out. You canactive or deactivate coupons whenever you want.For example, if a seasonal coupon has expired, youcan de-activate it; you can try a new offer, build itand activate it for a short period of time.Create a NewsletterNewsletters are a great way to share informationand helpful tips that are important to your customers and relevant to your business. Newsletters tend to be longer than blogs so you can sharemore detailed information. For example, if youare a landscaping company, your newsletter mightfocus on the type of garden maintenance to do eachseason. they are also useful for highlighting news,events and offers.Manage Customer ListsDid you know that you can manage your customer lists on MerchantCircle? You can importyour existing customer email addresses from yourfavorate email program - like Outlook, GMail orYahoo!. Managing your customer lists online letsyou quickly communicate new offers, updates andpromotions in newsletters, coupons and ads.5

6 Here’s how to manage customer groups:Here’s how to add customers to your lists: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Connect With Customers’ (left menu). Click ‘Manage Customer Groups.’ Add a group name, click ‘Create.’ Click on the group name in blue. Click ‘Add’ from my customer (upper right handside). Select the names to add by clicking the checkbox to the right of their name.Click ‘Save.’ Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Connect With Customers’ (left menu). Click ‘Manage Customers.’ Add customers directly by pasting email addresses into the ‘Add a Customer Email Address’box.Create an AdImport customers from your address book inOutlook, GMail, Yahoo! or other email applications by clicking the ‘Add from My Address Book”button, and following the instructions for your mailprogram.Create Customer GroupsYou can organize your customers lists into groupsfor specific communications. For example, customers who want to receive a newsletter but not directemails can be put in different groups.You’ve probably noticed the ads of other local businesses on the right side of your MerchantCirclelisting. If you haven’t created one of your own yet,this is the perfect time to get your business’s nameon other sites. Ads provide potential customers theopportunity to click on your ad and visit your listingwhere they can read all about your business throughyour blogs, newsletters, and the reviews other customers have written about you.

Here is how to create an add on MerchantCircle: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Promote My Business’ (left menu). Click ‘Create/Manage MerchantCircle Ads.’ Click ‘Create and Advertisement’ in top blockmenu. Fill out ad information such as ad title, ad text,and keywords, and then click ‘Next Step.’ Submit your ad. You can save it to work on later,or you can publish it by clicking ‘Activate.’Please note, for Google and Yahoo! ads, it takesapproximately 3 days for our ad optimizers toconfigure your advertisement for the best possibleperformance.Creating LinksContent is only one piece of the online advertising puzzle. The other piece of the puzzle is Links.Search engines like links because they indicate thatyour site is valued by other sites on the web - that’swhy they linked to you.You like links because they drive traffic to yoursite. Traffic obviously comes from search engines.But traffic can also come from other business sites,directories you might be listed in, associations yourbusiness supports, etc.Developing links on MerchantCircle is as easy assharing a good idea with a colleague. By invitingother local merchants to join your MerchantCirclenetwork (and get all the benefits associated withMerchantCircle) you add links to your listing.These links go both ways your ads can now reacheach others’ customers - so you both benefit.Here’s how you invite colleagues to join your network: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Build My Network’ (on left hand side). Click ‘Invite Merchants.’ Add your colleagues email addresses (directly orfrom an existing address book). Scroll down to personalize your email message. Click ‘Send Invitation.’There are a few other ways to create meaningfullinks to either your MerchantCircle listing of yourbusiness web page.WidgetsAdd customer review content to your businesswebpage, personal website, blog, or MySpace page.You can include a unique logo that says “Member ofMerchantCircle” in your online advertising and usethese links to drive more customers to your businesslisting from external sites.7

8 Here’s how you add our logo to your website: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Promote My Business’ (left menu). Click on ‘Downloads & Widgets’. Copy and paste the pre-formatted HTML codeonto your web site where you want the logo toappear. Save.Merchant “Talk to Me”Give customers easy access to your business with our“Talk to Me” feature. Your listing indicates whenyou are online so you can answer questions fromcustomers visiting your site in real time and establish a conversation right on your MerchantCirclelisting.Custom URLsHelp customers find you with an easy-to-rememberURL that reflects who and what you do. Includeyour new URL on business cards, print advertisements, your email signature, and more! Run anonline promotion (ad, coupon, and newsletter)featuring your new URL to showcase your latestofferings.Here’s how to get a custom URL: Login to MerchantCircle. Click on ‘Customize My Website’ (left menu). Click on ‘Edit Business Profile.’ Scroll down to ‘Custom URL’ and enter theURL you’d like for your business. Type in a short word or words, using only letters(a-z, A-Z) or digits (0-9) and no spaces. If ithasn’t been taken, it’s yours, for as long as youhave your MerchantCircle account.Tracking Account ActivityTrack your online performance on your personalizedreport page. The page displays recent account activity, activity in your network and the performance ofyour site against predefined targets - like your network, and the overall MerchantCircle community.Data is reported for the previous six months, exceptfor Recent Visits which tracks the previous 30 days.Under your reports, you can click on the followingtopics for detailed performance information:Visits: tracks the number of visitors to yourpage by total visits including search engines (lightbar) and human visits (dark bar).
