The AnimalScience/Pre-Vet major took anunexpected path after graduatingfrom Iowa State University: Instead ofcontinuing on to veterinary school, shebecame a marketing coordinator atlocal animal nutrition company ZinproCorporation. And at her employer’srecommendation, she enrolled in the MBAprogram to build her business knowledge.Finance, accounting, strategicmanagement—the concepts covered inclass were new to Joyce. But she quicklygot up to speed. And to her surprise, shebegan applying lessons from class rightaway to grow and develop at work.“I could go to class on a Tuesday night, come to work on a Wednesday morning, and immediately implement something Ihad learned,” she says.Joyce worked full-time at Zinpro andupheld a rigorous travel schedule as sheworked toward earning her MBA. Shetook online and condensed courses thatallowed her to spend less time on campus, progress through the curriculum morequickly, and finish the program soonerthan she expected.“I came into the program with nobusiness background and I planned on ittaking four years to complete,” she says.“But thanks to the online and condensedcourse offerings, I was able to shave a yearoff of that time and finish in three years.”Just before graduating from the CarlsonSchool, Joyce was promoted to marketingassociate for North America and later toproject manager—commercialization. “Istarted the Part-Time MBA program withthe intent to stay at Zinpro, and the goal ofacquiring the skills needed to further mycareer here. And the goal was realized, asthat’s exactly what happened,” she says.
