Separate publications are provided for the Law School, thePre-Licensure Nursing Programs, the Graduate Nursing Programs, the Master ofBusiness Administration degree, the Master of Music in Music Education degree, andSummer School. The information in this Graduate Nursing Student handbook applies tothe 2020-2021 academic year. Capital UniversitySchool of NursingGraduate Program, 2021-2022AffiliationCapital University is one of the oldest institutions of higher education of the EvangelicalLutheran Church in America.Capital University is organized into five operating divisions: Academic Affairs, Planningand Strategy, Resource Management, Student Affairs, and University Advancement.The UniversityThe University’s Academic Affairs division has two primary divisions, the College, underwhich all academic programs on the Bexley campus are organized, and the LawSchool, which provides legal and related studies on a separate campus located indowntown Columbus. Five schools comprise the College.The College1. The School of Management and Leadership offers Bachelor of Arts degrees inaccounting, financial economics, leadership and management, and marketing. TheMaster in Business Administration (MBA) is offered through a flexible part-time eveningprogram for working students. The MBA also can be earned as part of a joint programwith the Capital University Law School (JD/MBA) or with the School of Nursing(MSN/MBA). Selected undergraduate degree programs for working students also areavailable through the Registrar Office.2. The School of Social Sciences and Education is composed of six academicdepartments, offering both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Work degrees.3. The Conservatory of Music and School of Communication is composed of twodepartments. It offers undergraduate degrees, the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelorof Arts, and a Master of Music degree in Music Education.4. The School of Humanities is comprised of five academic departments and offers aBachelor of Arts degree.5. The School of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Master ofScience in Nursing degrees. The School of Nursing was established in 1950 and theMSN graduate program was initiated in 1994.The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is available through both the traditional four-yearprogram of study and a second-degree program in collaboration with the Adult andGraduate Education office. The MSN graduate program offers concentrates in NursingEducation, Nursing Administration, Theological Studies, and Legal Studies. Enrollmentin the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist concentrate is suspended for the2020-2021 academic year. The following dual degrees are also available: MSN/MBAand MSN/JD. A post-master’s certificate in Nursing Education is also available. Thepost-master’s certificate in the CNS post-master’s certificate program is suspended forthe 2020-2021 academic year.9

Capital UniversitySchool of NursingGraduate Program, 2021-2022The School of Nursing offers the Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree totraditional students and accelerated BSN second-degree (ABSN) students. Throughthe MSN graduate program, launched in 1994, students may earn a Master of Sciencein Nursing (MSN) degree or one of two dual degrees: an MSN/MBA (Master in BusinessAdministration) and MSN/JD (Juris Doctorate). The programs of the School of Nursingare approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission forCollegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).The Law SchoolDean – Reynaldo Anaya Valencia, J.D.The Law School became part of the university in 1966. The Juris Doctor is awardedupon successful completion of 86 semester hours in the three-year, full-time dayprogram, or the four-year, part-time evening program. A part-time day program began infall 1999. There are a numberof ways to communicate with other students and with faculty.Student E-MailThe School of Nursing communicates with all Nursing students via their Capital e-mailaccounts. It is the students’ responsibility to check their e-mail frequently.Student Mail FoldersEvery nursing student has a mail folder located on the third floor lobby of Battelle Hall(BHSN). However, most School of Nursing paperwork and communication is electronic.Faculty MailboxesFaculty mailboxes for the School of Nursing are found inside the nursing suite in BattelleHall 330 (copy room). The mailboxes for other faculty on campus are in the buildingswhere their offices are located.Faculty E-Mail & Voice MailE-mail is the primary mode of communication to students. Check e-mails daily and useyour Capital e-mail to communicate with faculty and staff. Faculty of courses may alsocommunicate to students in a course via e-mail through the online course managementsystem (iLearn). Faculty can also receive voice mail messages on their officetelephones. Adjunct faculty may use other e-mail addresses or cell phones; be sureand check course syllabi for faculty e-mail preference.Bulletin BoardsAnnouncements of campus events and can be found on bulletin boards across campus.Information, specifically for nursing students, is posted on the bulletin boards located onthe third floor of Battelle Hall. Course notices, job opportunities, scholarships, andgeneral information are posted on several bulletin boards in the hallway. The NursingHonor Society, Sigma Theta Tau, and the Capital University Student NursesAssociation also maintain bulletin boards on the third floor of Battelle Hall.Social MediaThe School of Nursing maintains a social media presence on Facebook, Twitter,Pinterest, and Spotify as @CapitalUNursing and on Instagram as @CapitalNursing.12

Capital UniversitySchool of NursingGraduate Program, 2021-2022Section 3: Your Faculty AdviserEach student is assigned a Nursing faculty member as an adviser. Advisers have avariety of teaching and committee responsibilities which may take them off campus.Therefore, it is strongly suggested that students make arrangements ahead of time ifthey need to meet with their adviser. Once students begin progressing in theirprogram, they may feel comfortable meeting with their adviser less often.How to Contact Your AdviserStudents may contact their adviser by telephone, by leaving a message in their mailbox(in BHSN 330), or by sending them an e-mail.What Your Adviser DoesFaculty advisers will: a) provide students with guidance in planning academicschedules, b) monitor progress through the program, c) facilitate solutions to academicproblems, and d) be available for general advice.The Graduate Nursing Program has a philosophy of self- directedness and this is part ofthe advising process. Faculty advisers will assist students in completing theircurriculum in a timely manner. However, the student is ultimately responsible forfulfilling all the curriculum requirements for their degree. Students should be reviewingtheir program evaluation through MyCap each semester.Course RegistrationRegistration is completed by the student through MyCap following consultation with theirfaculty adviser. Course listings for scheduling are available on MyCap approximately sixto eight weeks before registration begins. Students should not wait for their facultyadviser to contact them regarding course registration. Students on financial hold will notbe able to register for courses until the hold is lifted off their account.Issues with course registration should be directed to Nursing’s Student ServicesAdministrative Assistant located in BHSN 329 or to the Office of the Registrar –registrar@capital.edu .13

In 1965, it became the School of Nursing, an integral academic unit ofthe university. The undergraduate nursing curriculum provides students the opportunityto blend a strong liberal arts foundation with professional studies. The MSN graduateprogram was established in 1994 and provides the registered nurse with the opportunityto advance through interdisciplinary education. The faculty members are skilledprofessionals as well as dedicated teachers. Student experiences in a wide variety ofhealth care facilities throughout Columbus and Franklin County provide a broad base ofknowledge and skill for professional practice.InnovationOver the years, innovation, creativity, and service have characterized the School ofNursing. The School pioneered the incorporation of nursing research at theundergraduate level, was in the forefront of the wellness movement in nursing educationand in precepted learning experiences for students. At the height of the nationalinterest in the space program, the School, with the help of the United States Air Force,was the first in the free world to offer a number of its student’s short-term study inaerospace nursing.The School has long demonstrated a strong commitment to the transcultural aspects ofnursing with increasing emphasis within the curriculum. Off campus study opportunitiesthat include clinical experiences are offered in Scotland and Sweden. Informaticseducation for nurses has been a cutting edge aspect of our Graduate program forseveral years. Faculty and students regularly respond to requests for participation instudies from master and doctoral students from other institutions and conductinstitutional and professional research consistent with the mission of the University.15

Recognition of this commitment and excellence in the provision of holisticeducation is demonstrated through earning endorsement of all four nursing programsfrom the American Holistic Nurses Certification Corporation (AHNCC). As of thiswriting, Capital University is the only nursing program with all programs holding thisendorsement.Honorary DegreesA desire to recognize and celebrate nursing’s contributions to society has beenoperational through the nominations of outstanding nurses for honorary degrees fromCapital University. To date, seven nurses have been so honored. They are: Pearl Tucker, Col., USAF, RetiredGeraldine Price, Director of the Division of Nursing at the Ohio Department of HealthDorothy Cornelius, Executive Director of the Ohio Nurses Association, past ANA andICN PresidentJuanita Thiele, Founder of the Department, a leader in nursing education & globalserviceMary Jane Sievwright, Nursing leader in Jamaica and ICNSister Roni Daniels, Advocate for the homeless and health care provider in Washington,D.C., Haiti and the Dominican RepublicKevin Sowers, President, Duke University HospitalNursing HonoraryA chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Theta Theta, waschartered at Capital University in 1986. Capital’s Theta Theta Chapter wassubsequently recognized with a major award, the chapter Key Award, from theInternational Honor Society in 1991. This honor is impressive for so young a chaptersince only 26 chapters in undergraduate nursing programs were selected from amongthe over 300 chapters worldwide.Junior and senior traditional students, BSN Completion students, graduate students,and community nurse leaders are eligible by invitation for election to Theta ThetaChapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing based onscholarship and leadership. The Chapter offers programs for the nursing communityeach year.FacilitiesFaculty offices, classrooms, assessment rooms, nursing skills, and computerlaboratories are located in the Battelle Memorial Hall of Science and Nursing. Theassessment rooms and laboratories are equipped to allow students to develop theirskills in simulated clinical settings in preparation for actual practice in health carefacilities. The Helene Fuld Health Trust Learning Resources Laboratory provides stateof-the-art microcomputers for student use.16

Both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs areaccredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). CapitalUniversity is a charter member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing(AACN) and is a member of the North American Consortium of Nursing and AlliedHealth for International Cooperation (NAC-NAHIC).
