Ash Wednesday Ashes Question: Why do we place ashes on our forehead each Ash Wednesday? Answer: Ashes are rich in spiritual symbolism. We recall in the second chapter of Genesis, when the human person is fashioned “out of the dust of the ground” and receives the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). In death, a person returns to the ground from which we came. The ancient Hebrews used ashes as a sign of repentance, reminding themselves that God is God and we are not. As the Priest, Deacon or Extraordinary Minister places ashes on our forehead, we hear either “remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return” or “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” When we receive ashes, we remember our own mortality. We’re reminded that we have limited time on this earth and we ought to make the best use of it that we can! People are in need of love, care, and compassion. We all need to continually rediscover the love of God. The Gospel invites every person in every stage of life to encounter and imitate Jesus here and now. The forty days of Lent are the perfect time to assess our own awareness of these realities. F 27, 2022 St. Joseph, Defender of Life, Pray for Us ! The Sanctuary Candle at the Tabernacle indicates and honors the Presence of Christ. The Candle is lit In Loving Memory of All Those Buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery The Candle on the Altar of The Blessed Virgin Mary is lit In Thanksgiving The Candle on the Altar of St. Joseph is lit In Loving Memory The Deceased Members of Saint Paul VI Parish Please pray for the men and women in the medical field, first responders, and all those risking their lives in the midst of the pandemic. Prayer During Pandemic O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother Mary, We, Your children of every nation, Turn to You in this pandemic. Our troubles are numerous; our fears are great. Grant that we might deposit them at Your feet, Take refuge in Your Immaculate Heart, And obtain peace, healing, rescue, And timely help in all our needs. You are our Mother. Pray for us to Your Son. Amen Liturgy Notes Welcome to Saint Paul VI Parish as we gather for the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist on this last Sunday of February. Today’s Sacred Scriptures again bring to our ears words reminding us of the struggle of good and evil. The tree that is taken care of, watered and nurtured will thrive and endure a good life. On the other hand, whether a plant or person, is not nourished by the grace of God, will dry up and wither. We are also told that we should “shine like lights” and we certainly can with our eyes and ears open to God and His call. Hymns today reflect all aspects of these Scriptures. “Gather Us In” opens our eyes to the “new light streaming”, “Praise Be To You” invites us to “open our eyes”, and “Sing a New Song” is a general song of praise acknowledging the goodness of the Lord. Intercessory Prayer Prayer is powerful! Let us pray for you and your needs. If you have a special need or intention for which you would like the prayers of your parish community, please call Gwen at 203 248 9176. So many of you have been doing this since last August when we restarted the Food Pantry. Would you believe that we have collected 4709 items since we began? We have helped so many that need food to survive. We have supported some families and the ministry of the Apostles of Sacred Heart in New Haven. So many of you are making it possible to help so many people and to treat others as we'd want to be treated. I am overwhelmed by your generosity, support, and the help of ao many volunteers. May our Lord bless. you always. Deacon Dominic Corraro Please notice the boxes located at each entryway of the Church. Anyone in need, please reach out to Sr. Ann, at 203 287 9017 (all calls will be confidential) A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar Today Jesus tells us: “Why do you see the speck in someone else’s eye but miss the log in your own eye?” It’s always easier to try to change someone else than face the things in ourselves which need change. What a waste of time for we can’t change anyone but ourselves. Every tree is known by its fruit. What gifts and talents has the Lord given you? Jesus speaks of mercy, the key to creating a better world. Are you being called to create a better world as a priest or religious? If you wish to, call Fr. Michael Casey, Director of Vocations, Archdiocesan Pastoral Center, 860 761 7456, email vocations@aohct.org or it the web at www.hartfordpriest.com. Please be assured all areas of the Church buildings are sanitized thoroughly, according to State of Connecticut and CDC regulations.
