Postdoctoral Trainingat the NationalToxicology ProgramU.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Toxicological PathologyThis fellowship provides trainees rodent pathologyexpertise in multiple areas, including cardiac, pulmonary, renal, reproductive, and immunesystem toxicology by: Participating in NTP research projects. Learning to accurately diagnose pathology data. Learning rodent pathology. The experience gained through this fellowship willhelp prepare candidates for board certificationby the American College of Veterinary Pathologists(clinical or anatomical pathology). The research performed can be thesis work towardthe achievement of a Ph.D. degree by arrangementwith various universities. Note: Two years ofveterinary pathology residency training isrequired to participate. The National Toxicology ProgramNTP is the nation’s premier federal program for testingand evaluating agents of public health concern in ourenvironment. NTP develops and applies tools of moderntoxicology and molecular biology to evaluate substancesthat may potentially cause harm to human health. Forinformation about NTP, visit https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov.NTP is headquartered at the National Institute ofEnvironmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of theNational Institutes of Health.

Applied Toxicology andCarcinogenesisThese non-laboratory fellowships provideopportunities for trainees, including: Serving as lead scientist and participatingin the development of testing strategies, the design and conduct of studiesconducted at NTP contracted laboratories, and the evaluation and interpretationof toxicity and carcinogenicity data. Coordinating activities of a multi-disciplinaryteam of scientists. Developing a subspecialty area and authoringreports in the NTP Technical Report seriesand peer-reviewed publications. The experience gained through this fellowshipwill prepare candidates for the Diplomate of theAmerican Board of Toxicology (D.A.B.T.) certification.Biomolecular Screening andComputational ToxicologyThese fellowships are designed to train individuals in: Developing research and testing activities inmedium-throughput and high-throughputcontent screening assays for the rapiddetection of biomarkers of toxicity. Developing and conducting toxicology screeningassays using alternative animal models, suchas the roundworm, Caenorhabditis elegans. Developing approaches to understand thegenetic and epigenetic basis for differencesin susceptibility. Developing computational tools and approachesto allow for an integrated assessment of data.

Chemistry, Chemical Metabolism,Disposition, and ToxicokineticsThese fellowships provide opportunities for traineesto develop expertise in the field of xenobioticmetabolism, disposition, and toxicokinetics.Trainees will be part of multidisciplinaryteams and will be: Participating in the design of NTPchemical disposition, metabolism, and toxicokinetic studies. Monitoring the conduct of studies at NTPcontract laboratories. Evaluating and interpreting chemistry, toxicokinetics, metabolism, and disposition data. Presenting data at NTP and national forums. Preparing data to be published in thepeer-reviewed literature and NTP TechnicalReport series.Applicants with a Ph.D. in chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, or allied fields, with priorexperience in xenobiotic metabolism anddisposition, are eligible.Health Assessment and TranslationThese fellowships are designed to providetrainees experience in the assessment, integration, interpretation, and communicationof scientific information on environmentalagents. Trainees will gain experience in: Conducting in-depth, systematicevaluations of laboratory and clinicaldata, integrating relevant information forreaching conclusions, and managingpeer review. Carrying out workshops or state-of-thescience evaluations to address importantenvironmental health issues. Interpreting and communicating toxicologyinformation useful for public health policy.

Laboratory Animal MedicineThese fellowships are designed to allowindividuals to participate in NTP andNIEHS laboratory animal veterinary care. This includes: Clinical and surgical responsibilities. Learning to manage a researchanimal facility. Conducting research and publishingresults in peer-reviewed journals. Participating in didactic training withother local laboratory animalmedicine residents. Participating in clinical rotationsat nearby academic institutions. The experiences gained through this fellowshipwill prepare candidates for the American Collegeof Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)certifying examination.Systems and MechanisticToxicologyThese fellowships help develop advancedapproaches for the collection and interpretationof data generated from in vivo and in vitroexperiments, including: Learning a range of molecular biologyand pathology techniques. Studying toxicology pathways and themode of action of chemicals of interestto the NTP and regulatory agencies. Gaining specialized training in systemstoxicology by studying specific nervous, endocrine, or respiratory systems.

Postdoctoral Training Opportunitiesat the National Toxicology ProgramThe National Toxicology Program (NTP) offersa limited number of postdoctoral training fellowshipsthat prepare scientists for careers in pharmaceuticaland chemical industries, regulatory agencies, and academia. NTP fellowships are offeredin seven areas of toxicology sciences.EligibilityApplicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent intoxicology or an allied science, M.D., D.V.M.,or other equivalent professional degree.Visa assistance is available for qualifiedinternational applicants.Stipend and BenefitsThe postdoctoral training program funds fellowshipsfor up to five years. Stipends are determined by theamount of previous postdoctoral experience.Medical insurance is provided. To ApplyThe number of NTP fellowships is very limitedand competitive. There is no specific deadlinefor applying. To check availability of a fellowship in the fieldof your choice, send a cover letter, curriculumvitae, and the names and contact informationof three persons as references to:Diane SpencerNTP Training Program CoordinatorNational Institute ofEnvironmental Health SciencesResearch Triangle Park, N.C.spencer2@niehs.nih.gov984-287-3190September 2019
