The 2017 Pennsylvania State Health Assessment is a report on health status, health risks and healthcare services in Pennsylvania. It identifies areas for health improvement, reports factors that contribute tohealth issues; and identifies assets and resources that can be mobilized to address population healthimprovement. National standards for public health departments, developed by the Public HealthAccreditation Board, have been used to guide the process for the state assessment.The state health assessment was developed through a collaborative process coordinated by thePennsylvania Department of Health. It included other state agencies and organizations that representeddiverse state populations and state health challenges, as well as Department of Health bureaus andprograms. The contributing organizations provided data and narrative to create the comprehensive statehealth assessment.Information provided in the 2017 Pennsylvania State Health Assessment Key Health Findings At-aGlance focuses on the general population of the commonwealth. Health disparity information includingrace/ethnicity, age, sex and geographic comparisons are included in the full report.The Pennsylvania State Health Assessment 2017 Update Key Health Findings is organized into thefollowing 10 major topics and includes data relevant to each topic:1. National Rate or Number– Presents national statistic compared to Pa. statistic (using the lastyear listed in the Pa., Points in Time unless otherwise noted.) HP2020 Target – Presents the HealthyPeople 2020 target for the key health finding whenavailable. Pa. Rank – Compares Pennsylvania with other states (using data from the same year listed in thelast year of the Pa., Points in Time unless otherwise noted.) Rank is determined based on the #1state being the healthiest and the #50 state being the unhealthiest. Ranking healthiest andunhealthiest does not take into account sampling errors or other sources of statistical variations. Other States Range – Presents the #1 state’s (healthiest) statistic and the #50 state’s(unhealthiest) statistic in comparison to the Pa. Rank.
