John DeerePower SystemsDiesel Engines and Drivetrain Components

Continuous innovation Off-highway heritageAt John Deere, we have extensive off-highway engine and drivetraincomponent experience. Since 1949, we have designed and manufacturednearly 6 million off-highway diesel engines. It all began in 1918 when John Deere purchased the WaterlooGasoline Engine Company. We built our first diesel engine in 1949for our Model R tractor. By the 1960s, John Deere had developed afull line of four- and six-cylinder diesel engines for the agriculturaland construction equipment industries. Our reputation for reliable power continued to grow, and originalequipment manufacturers (OEMs) began installing John Deereengines in off-highway equipment during the early 1970s.In 1989, we expanded our commitment to drivetrain componentsby purchasing Funk Manufacturing (now known as John DeereCoffeyville Works) and added to our experience base for integratingcomplete John Deere drivetrains into off-highway equipment.Today, John Deere provides diesel engines for agriculture, construction, forestry, mining, generator drive, and marine applications.1949 – John Deere buildsits first diesel engine forthe Model R tractor1920Early 1970s – John Deerebegins to supply enginesand components to OEMs1995 – John Deere introducesthe PowerTech engine line, which meets Tier 1/Stage Iemissions regulations1960194020001918 – John Deerepurchases the WaterlooGasoline Engine Company1960 – John Deereintroduces the 300, 400,and 500 series engines2006 – John Deere receivesMSHA certification for the2.4L and 3.0L engines19801989 – John Deere acquiresFunk Manufacturing2001 – John Deere introducesPowerTech engines that meetTier 2/Stage II emissions regulations1991 – John Deerebegins productionof marine engines2005 – John Deere unveils thePowerTech family, which includesPowerTech Plus, PowerTech E, and PowerTech M engines2004 – John Deere unveilsPowerTech Plus enginesthat meet Tier 3/Stage III Aemissions regulations2003 – John Deereintroduces full line ofTier 2 marine engines3

John Deere advancements First off-highway technology application — John Deeredeveloped the first off-highway engines that used turbochargers,air-to-air charge air cooling, and electronic engine controls.PowerTech family ofindustrial engines30 – 448 kW (40 – 600 hp)Modular drivetrain components — John Deere hydraulicpump drives were the first to be built with a modular designthat allows pump drives to be configured to customers’ exactspecifications. This modular approach also extends to otherdrivetrain components. Our axles are highly configurable, andour electronically controlled transmissions can be customizedwith specific shift patterns and characteristics.PowerTech family ofmining engines37 – 62 kW (49 – 83 hp)4HMD transmissions, powershift transmissions, planetary gear drives, axles, and pump drives

Maximum power in minimum space — Enginetechnologies such as four-valve cylinder heads help usachieve maximum power density for standby and primepower generation.PowerTech family ofgenerator drive engines50 Hz: 21 – 456 kW (28 – 612 hp)60 Hz: 35 – 460 kW (47 – 617 hp)More power in the water — Commercial and recreationalboat owners have been relying on John Deere engines for morethan 30 years.PowerTech marine engines56 – 455 kW (75 – 610 hp) propulsion engines40 – 300 kW (54 – 402 hp) generator drive engines5

Precision manufacturing Global productionPersonalized optionsWe’ve built nearly 6 million diesel engines in the United States,France, Mexico, India, and Argentina. Thousands of drivetraincomponent configurations are built in the United States andMexico. A rigorous quality management process is followed ateach factory to ensure consistent product quality.Every engine is built to your specifications from a wide selection ofengine options — everything from engine power, flywheels, andfan drives to engine paint color. By working with our drivetrainapplication engineers, you are able to select from a wide arrayof options to best meet your requirements.Precision processesEvery component is fine-tuned before it leaves the factory. Forexample, fuel injection nozzles are individually bar-coded so theycan be calibrated to a specific cylinder. Our Smart Tool systemapplies the proper torque to individual components based on theengine model being built. We even grind unique profiles on gearteeth to ensure quiet, efficientoperation and a long life.No detail is too smallat John Deere.6

Reliability testsEvery engine that comes off the assemblyline is tested for torque rise, rated power, emissions performance, and electronicsverification. Our pump drives areconfigured from modular componentsthat are individually tested and verified. When we deliver an engine or drivetraincomponent, we are confident of its qualityand reliability.7

Real-world performance 8Thousands of applicationsOff-highway integrationJohn Deere is a leader in developing world-class dieselengines and drivetrain components, integrating them intotough applications, and distributing them to our customersworldwide for use in off-highway agricultural, construction, forestry, and mining applications. John Deere engines alsopower generator sets, compressors, and marine applications(propulsion and auxiliary). Our engineers and distributors work closely with customers to helpselect and integrate the right engine into each application. We alsobring a wealth of off-highway experience in drivetrain componentsand engine electronics systems. Being able to integrate engines, drivetrain components, and electronic controls is even more importanttoday with increasingly demanding emissions regulations.

In the trenchesOur engineers go beyondthe computer drawings tomake sure the componentsthey design perform asexpected. Real-world experiencehelps us understand how wecan help customers integrate ourcomponents into equipment.9

Global support Service when you need itParts delivered fastJohn Deere dealers and distributors are your best source forexpert service, knowledge, and accessories for engines anddrivetrain components. With more than 4,000John Deere service locations throughout theworld, you’re never far from support. You can count on genuine John Deere parts. We have centralizedwarehouses in the United States and Europe, plus numerousworldwide depots — so you’ll never have to wait long forreplacement parts or remanufacturedcomponents. Overnight deliveryis available in most areas.Log on to www.JohnDeere.com/dealerto find the service dealer nearest you.10

Repairs done rightJohn Deere service personnel are highly trained technicians whostay on top of changing technologies and service methods throughfactory schools and hands-on training.A warranty you can count onJohn Deere engines and drivetrain components come withcompetitive warranties and are available with extendedwarranties. We take a customer-friendly approach to warrantywork for our customers.11

Balance of power Improving performanceJohn Deere leads the industry with many new off-highway engineand drivetrain power advancements. A prime example is thedevelopment of event-based shifting on several of our electronicallycontrolled transmissions. This technology integrates engine andtransmission electronic controls to make shifts barely perceptibleby the operator regardless of load on the engine. From enginecylinders, to advanced electronic systems and modular drivetraincomponents, John Deere engineers never stop refining andimproving performance.12

Saving fuelBecause fuel is one of the largest operating expenses for equipmentowners, fuel economy will continue to be an important part of thepower equation. That’s why we work hard to squeeze every drop offuel efficiency from our engines. No matter how you measure it,at full load or partial load, third-party tests prove that John DeerePowerTech Plus engines deliver best-in-class fuel economy.Protecting the environmentJohn Deere takes its responsibility to the environment veryseriously. We have been working on lowering engine emissionssince 1967, when John Deere first installed emissions testingequipment — years before government standards were set in theUnited States and Europe. Today, we utilize the latest technologiesto meet stringent emissions regulations in all applications.13

Bringing it all together System integrationGetting the most out of your equipment relies on successfulintegration of all components. John Deere can help integrateyour entire powertrain system from the engine and electronics tothe drivetrain components. Because these parts are built to worktogether, John Deere is able to deliver maximum performanceand fuel economy while meeting emissions regulations. No matter what the future holds, John Deere Power Systemshas the experience and resources to lead the way — providinginnovation, precision, performance, and support.14
