The sights, loud sounds and strange smells canmake even the most outgoing, active catbecome nervous and shut down. For catswho already tend to be shy, the stress oftheir shelter surroundings can make themhide under blankets and in the corners ofcages to avoid contact with anyone whoapproaches. Stress can also lead to illnesssuch as upper respiratory infection. All ofthese things can contribute to making acat seem less “adoptable.”Cat Pawsitive was created to help keepthat from happening. Developed byJackson Galaxy and a team of animalbehavior experts, The Cat Pawsitiveprogram is a mojo-enhancing, positivereinforcement clicker training initiativethat enriches day-to-day life for cats inshelters, builds new skills for cats as wellas shelter staff and volunteers, promotesthe human-cat bond, and helps improveadoptability.By utilizing this positive, reward-basedCat Pawsitive training, a shelter volunteeror staff member can reduce the stressesthat might keep a cat from connectingwith an adopter. With clicker trainingthat positively reinforces good behaviors,a shy cat can learn to feel comfortablecoming up to the front of her cage to meeta potential pet parent, a feisty cat canlearn to play nice, and an outgoing kittycan even learn to give an endearing “highfive” to his visitors to seal an adoptiondeal. Cats gain confidence and getmental and physical stimulation throughtheir clicker training sessions, and soonthey are building connections with staff, volunteers and potential adopters.According to the founder of this excitingprogram, Jackson Galaxy, “Cat Pawsitiveis about awareness, enrichment, innovation, and increased adoptionplacement on a grassroots level. I knowthat the work done during this programwill have a ripple effect, helping so manycats in need and the humans who care forthem.”An inmate in the “Monroe CorrectionsKitten Connections” foster program. In August, Purrfect Pals staff will begin thisintensive four-month training programunder the guidance of a Cat Pawsitive ProTrainer-Mentor. The program will first beimplemented at our Arlington sanctuaryand later expanded to include PurrfectPals foster parents and volunteers. We are excited to incorporate CatPawsitive training techniques into thebehavioral rehabilitation work alreadybeing done in our prison foster program. With support from our staff andvolunteers, more than a dozen inmatesin the Monroe Correctional Complex’sSpecial Offender Unit foster feral andundersocialized Purrfect Pals cats andkittens. Since the “Monroe CorrectionsKitten Connections” program wascreated in 2006, 750 cats and kittenshave participated. These special kittieslive one-on-one with inmates full-time,making the prison an ideal environmentfor Cat Pawsitive training. We are excited to begin our Cat Pawsitivetraining later this year and look forwardto sharing our progress with you in futurenewsletters!

-3-PURRthePurrfect Pals Veterinary Clinic Staff SpotlightMeet three of the talented and passionate employees at our Arlington sanctuarywho are providing second chances for cats and kittens!Dr. Leslie Kasper, Lead Shelter VeterinarianWhat attracted you to Purrfect Pals? The spirit of the organization and its cause, plusthe people who strive to make the dream a reality every day. What do you think makes Purrfect Pals different from other shelters? Definitelythe people. Everyone from the Board Chair to Cat Care Specialists to the Volunteershave their hearts invested in giving every chance to every cat that crosses ourthreshold. What is your vision for the future of Purrfect Pals? I want Purrfect Pals to be aregional leader in cat adoptions. I want people to drive from throughout the state tovisit our locations and know they will always find the perfect cat for them, regardlessof what they are looking for in a lifetime companion. What do you wish more people knew about what you do? Unfortunately, thestereotypical vision about a Shelter Veterinarian is either spay/neuter surgery oreuthanasia. There is so much more that I do! We have over 150 cats on premises, withdozens more in adoption locations, that need continual care. If a cat gets sick, needs a procedure, or simply needs the stampof approval to be cleared for adoption, my team and I are there to do everything that kitty needs to be happy and healthy. What keeps you invested in your job? Feline medicine is dynamic - always interesting and challenging. Cats don’t “read thebook.” My day to day routine is never boring! And there will always be a kitty who needs me.MJ Zelinka, Director of OperationsWhat led you to a career in animal welfare? Truthfully, I fell into animalwelfare. I worked in private practice for twenty years, starting as a kennelattendant then assistant followed by earning my LVT and becoming practicemanager. I had “retired” from veterinary medicine and started a new careerin human surgery. While seeking employment in the human field I took apart time position as an LVT in HVHQSN (High volume, high quality spay andneuter) and fell in love with animal welfare (that was 10 years ago). What attracted you to Purrfect Pals? I have a unique skill set. What I dobest is all the things that are a part of my job here at Purrfect Pals. Somedays,I feel like this job was made for me or maybe, I was made for this job. What do you think makes Purrfect Pals different from other shelters?Purrfect Pals is very unique. We offer what is not typically available at mostshelters. We have foster, adoption, and sanctuary placements for cats from healthy young kittens to older cats with chronicconditions or retroviral diseases like FELV/FIV. A lot of these cats would be euthanized in a typical shelter setting. What keeps you invested in your job at Purrfect Pals? The love and passion everyone has! Not just the staff, but volunteers, donors, and even adopters! Not to mention the company representatives that I work with. They all are passionate about ourmission and what we do here at Purrfect Pals.

PURRthe-4-Leanna Stephenson, Lead Licensed Veterinary TechnicianWhat led you to a career in animal welfare? It all started with high volume spay andneuter and my passion for that. Shelter medicine is so important; I feel like I’m doinggood every day I’m at work. I want to help animals that don’t have owners and be theiradvocate. What do you do here at Purrfect Pals? I am the Lead Licensed Veterinary Technician inthe onsite clinic here at Purrfect Pals – I oversee the care our techs and assistants providefor all the kitties and their well-being.What do you think makes Purrfect Pals different from other shelters? We believeevery cat is adoptable. I love that, unlike other shelters, we don’t euthanize cats due tomedical conditions. What do you wish more people knew about what you do at Purrfect Pals? We makesure all the kitties, especially our long term residents, have regular routine bloodwork sowe don’t miss anything. With so many cats under our care that is very important! What has been the most rewarding or defining part of your involvement with animal welfare? Helping so many kittiesget healthy and find homes – it’s a very rewarding career!A Purrfect Ending for Two Special Brothers!work one-on-one with feral orundersocialized cats, teachingthem to trust humans. Afterintensive training at the prison, the boys were placed in fosterhome where their rehabilitationcontinued for several months. It took over a year to ready theboys for adoption but finally wewere able to send to our Denny’sPet World adoption center. After spending many yearstogether, our friend Susanlost both of her senior kitties,Winston and Sahara. When sheBrothers Rumble and Harley in their new home.felt ready to adopt again, SusanDelta and Bravo were among more than a began visiting older bonded pairs of cats indozen cats who were abandoned in 2015 our adoption centers. She was also open toin a run-down home and left to fend for adopting harder-to-adopt cats who neededthemselves. A kind cat lover heard about time and patience to settle into a home.the kitties from neighbors and stepped in After meeting several candidates, Susan feltto help. The cats were undersocialized and Delta and Bravo were the cats who neededunderstandably traumatized by their ordeal. her the most and for whom she couldOne-by-one, though, she trapped the entire provide a long and happy life.group and contacted Purrfect Pals for help. Now known as Rumble and Harley, the boysBrothers Delta and Bravo, then estimated have been with Susan for over a year andto be 5-6 years old, came to us terrified and a half and are thriving. Their story reallymistrustful of people. They joined our prison illustrates what makes Purrfect Pals sofoster program in Monroe, where inmates special: our belief that every cat is adoptableand our committment to giving special catsall the time they need to find forever homes. We couldn’t resist sharing this recent updatefrom Susan with you:“I can’t believe it’s been 18 months!Rumble continues to be a biglove bug who loves kisses, snuggles andtouching. He constantly stands between myfeet if I’m standing still and rubs the insidesof my knees, purring very loudly. He won’tgo so far as to be a lap cat, but he is perfectlyfine being under my arm and loves when Irub my chin on his head and kisses to hishead. Rumble likes a couple baskets to stuffhimself into, all 15# of him! He also likes todive into piles of pillows or blankets. He haslearned to like tummy rubs a bit more withtime. A few months ago you would enterthe tummy zone with raptor gloves, at yourown risk. He likes to roll on his back anddo the “otter pose”. How can you say no tothat? Rumble had 7 teeth pulled in May forhis stomatitis, and needs more pulled thisspring. But he’s doing fine!“Harley has come SOOOOO far the pastseveral months. He frequently comes upon the bed and snuggles up close, evencorking Rumble off for the “inside” position

-5for better pets and tummy rubs! He is allpurrs and loves his shoulder rubs and is fineif I want to hold his paw. He is still alwaysvery much aware of escape routes at alltimes, but he has been far more willing toget random pets around the house. Hehas been practicing leg rubs at feedingtimes and even circling between my feet, then looks up and beams with pride whenI tell him what a good boy he is. He lovesplaying with mousies that make noise anda big pink felt mouse. He chases them everyday, playing on his own especially in themorning. He’s been known to rabbit kick the“fur” off a few mousies. He is up to almost13# and made it to the vet last monthwhere he had 13 teeth extracted from hisstomatitis. He did GREAT and feels so muchbetter now! He came home, groggy and all,and headed right for Rumble’s leftovers andupstairs for the dry food. Then onto the bedfor tummy rubs. Rumble is a distracted eaterand Harley likes to swoop in for anythingstill in the bowl. Neither cat is territorialon food and appreciate my coming in andscooping their food into piles as neededand wait patiently. They are not so patientif deli turkey is involved. A lot of ordersbeing barked to hurry up and not scrimp onportions!“I got them a large cat tree with driftwoodand extra large platforms. They lovedhanging out in front of the open windowsduring the summer and early Fall, chasingeach other up and around the cat tree andwaking up from naps and scratching theirclaws all over it! They have many differentplaces to hang out of choice, althoughHarley still tends to like his “cat caves”(behind the angled bed, under or behindthe chair downstairs). They still have theiralmost daily 3:00 a.m. tussles, but I’velearned to just ignore it and let boys beboys. It ends up in running and chasing, asnack and then back to sleep a couple morehours.“They are smart boys and continue tocome to their respective names only. Theyalso know the words “treats”, “food in yourtummies”, “upstairs”, “downstairs”, “toys”,“snuggles” and “kisses”. Having been homethe past 5 months, they got in a rhythm ofmeals and about 11:15 each day they seekme out and Harley meeps or chirps andRumble barks orders at me that it’s timefor lunch!!! Same with about 5:00 p.m. fordinner. It all starts the same. a tentativepeek around the corner by one, rapidlyfollowed by the other, then the full onverbal announcements of my priorities. ThePURRtheOnce abandoned in a condemned house, Harley and Rumble are now living the good life.funniest part about the words they know is“kisses”. It’s a good thing for Rumble. He’sall in. When I ask Harley if he would likekisses, he literally backs right up. Doesn’teven turn around to run, just backs straightup. He does, however, not run when I dooccasionally get the opportunity to snaghim, pick up his front half, kiss his head afew times, put him back down and rub hisshoulders and neck. He purrs through it,even if it’s not his thing. We could not be happier! There is always afeeling of warmth when my little greetersare waiting at the door for me when I gethome. They are special boys and we havelots of years still ahead (they are roughly 8and 9). Thanks for being an important partof the journey!“They are both very happy, very content. They are in the same room with otherpeople (unless they have a vacuum cleanerand/or are moving fast) and will come upfor sniffs, but won’t typically allow petting. They aren’t really fearful, just not terriblyreceptive. But I am delighted to report theyare very happy watching birds, squirrelsand rabbits out the front window. They arestill very much a bonded pair but often arein different rooms during the day, whereever their favorite spot that day is. They areconfident, healthy, playful, loving kitties. My favorite time is if I am sitting on the bedand they both come up and we are one bigpuppy pile, noses within inches. I can’t sayI ever thought I would see that day, but it’shere. The trust and love in this householdare very evident!-Susan, Rumble Tumble and Harley“As grateful as I am for Rumble and Harley,I am equally grateful (still!) to everyonewho played a part in their success, directlyor indirectly! Please share our success storyand pat yourselves on the back for why youcontinue to do what you do - to bring peopleand pets together in the best way possible.“Purrs, gratitude and all the treats of theholiday season to each and every one ofyou!Share YOUR Cat’s Story! In just a fewweeks we willbe unveilinga brand newPurrfect Pals website! The new site showcasesPurrfect Pals kitties andtheir adopters and wewould love to share yourstories and photos! Please email your updatesand photos to us atwebsite@purrfectpals.org
