1 Introduction1 Introduction1.1 FOCUS intraoral X-ray unitFOCUS is a micro processor controlled intraoral X-rayunit with a HF DC generator, which produces high qualitydental images with film or digital receptors.A well balanced support arm is easy to move and verystable, keeping the unit motionless during the exposure. This manual supports two FOCUS intraoral X-ray majordesign revisions, namely version 2.0 and version 3.0. Seethe correct chapter of the manual for each revision in acase they differ. Note, that spare parts should also beordered accordingly. The correct design revision can be recognized from theserial number of the X-ray device as follows:VersionFOCUS 2.0FOCUS 3.0serial number5000 – 79998000 –1.2 ScopeThis document supplements User Manual and Installationmanual for servicing the X-ray unit. This is not a standalone manual. Refer the Associated documentation tooperate and to install the X-ray unit.Only a trained and authorized service personnel areallowed to service the unit.DisclaimerInstrumentarium Dental endeavors to produce productdocumentation that is accurate and up to date. However, our policy of continual product development may result inchanges to products that are not reflected in the productdocumentation. Therefore this document should beregarded as an infallible guide to current productspecifications.Instrumentarium Dental maintains the right to makechanges and alterations without a prior notice.51714-IMG rev 2Instrumentarium Dental1

1 Introduction1.3 Associated documentation 51774 FOCUS user manual (translations available)51775 FOCUS Installation manual208643 FOCUS Spare parts cataloque1.4 Servicing warnings and precautionsGeneral precautions The FOCUS intraoral x-ray unit must only beserviced and repaired by service personnel who havebeen trained and approved by Instrumentarium Dental. This manual is an aid to servicing the units and is NOTa substitute for approved Instrumentarium Dentalservice training. Before attempting to service a unit make sure that youknow how to operate the FOCUS . Read theFOCUS user's manual. Only use original Instrumentarium Dental spare partswhen repairing the unit or replacing parts.Radiation Safety Before servicing the unit familiarize yourself with localand national radiation safety standards andrequirements relating to dental x-ray equipment. If you need to take test exposures you MUST takeadequate steps to protect yourself from radiation. Usea lead apron or stand behind a suitable radiationshield. In addition, when taking exposures stand at least twometers (six feet) from the FOCUS .Mechanical safety2 Switch the power off and disconnect the unit from themain power supply before removing any covers.Disconnect the unit from the main power supply beforerepairing or replacing mechanical parts. Be careful when handling the unit not to get body partsor clothing trapped between the articulated arm. When replacing the tube head handle the articulatedare carefully as it will move suddenly when the tubehead is removed.Instrumentarium Dental51714-IMG rev 2

1 IntroductionElectrical Safety Switch the power off and disconnect the unit from themain power supply before replacing circuit boards orother electrical components. If there are capacitors ona circuit board or electrical component wait ten (10)minutes, after disconnecting the unit from the powersupply, before handling the board or component. Live electrical terminals are potentially dangerous. Make sure that main power supply is OFF beforeremoving covers or circuit boards. This equipment should be used only in areas that areprovided with a protective earth connection to ensurean equipotential ground connection. Before cleaning or disinfecting the unit switch the mainpower supply off.Electrostatic discharge51714-IMG rev 2 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage or destroyelectronic components. A static electricity charge builds up in everyone. Thebuild up is due to movement, humidity, the person'sclothing and the conductivity of the floor. If anyonecharged with static electricity touches a electroniccomponent the static electricity will discharge throughthe component and can damage or destroy it. Notethat components damaged by electrostatic dischargecan fail at a later date. When servicing the unit take proper precautions toavoid electrostatic build up and discharge (ESD). Follow the recommendations for the prevention of ESDthat are used in the country in which you are working. If no recommendations are available follow the guidelines below. Before handling any electrical parts or componentsmake sure that any static electricity charge that hasbuilt up in you body is discharged. When handling electrical parts or components use anelasticated wrist wrap which is connected to a groundpoint through a 1 Mohm current limiting cable. For aground point use water pipes, radiators or otherInstrumentarium Dental3

1 Introductionobjects that are known to be connected to the ground. Also use a cable to connect the unit to the sameground potential as the wrist wrap. If an antistatic mat is used, connect the wrist wrap tothe carpet and the carpet to the ground potential. Wash the wrist wrap and check that it is good conditionfrequently.Explosion Hazard Certain disinfectants and cleaning agents mayvaporize to form an explosive vapour. If suchchemicals are used the vapour should be allowed todisperse before switching the unit on.Operating warnings and precautions The FOCUSTM intraoral x-ray must only be used totake intraoral exposures. It must not be used for anyother purpose. The unit or its accessories must not be modified, altered or remanufactured in any way. Repairing shallbe performed by Instrumentarium Dental authorizedservice only. As radiation safety and protection requirements varyfrom country to country and state to state it is theresponsibility of the operator to ensure that all localand national radiation safety and protectionrequirements are met. The use of ACCESSORY equipment not complyingwith the equivalent safety requirements of thisequipment may lead to a reduced level of safety of theresulting system. Consideration relating to the choiceshall include:- use of the accessory in the PATIENT VICINITY- evidence that the safety certification of theACCESSORY has been performed in accordance tothe appropriate IEC 601-1 or IEC 950 and/or IEC601-1-1 harmonized national standard.4Instrumentarium Dental51714-IMG rev 2
