Department of Microbiology – Annual Report 2016-17Field trip to a biogas plantA field trip to an organic farm at Aroor was organized for the B Sc Microbiology students by theDepartment of Microbiology on 8th September 2016. The students were accompanied by Ms. Shainy N K, Ms.Asha B and Ms. Farha Baramy, Faculties, Department of Microbiology and Ms. Abitha V, Lab assistant,Department of Microbiology. The farm was owned by Mr Ilyas, a ‘Karshakashri’ award winning farmer, whostrictly employs organic farming methods in his field. The farm comprised of a vermi-composting plant, abiogas plant, a cattle and bird farm, cultivation of varieties of crops and trees. A large part of his property wasturned in to a natural forest with a rare collection of medicinal trees. The farm was completely free of plasticwastes.Mr. Ilyas was kind enough to give fruits and vegetables to the students. He also gave some samples ofplants from his collection and he also taught the students how to plant them and gave a detailed descriptionabout the plants.Mr. Ilyas explained about the vermi-composting plant were all the organic materials from his house, agricultural land and cow dung from his cattle farm were dumped into a well cemented pit and theearthworms from the previous batches are collected and again added to the new batch. He explained us theprocess of vermi-composting and how he recollects the earthworm after the whole process.Page 9

Department of Microbiology – Annual Report 2016-17He has a biogas plant in his backyard. For it he uses the cow dung from his cattle farm and the kitchenand agricultural waste products.
