The SF-586b Insertion Thermal Mass Flow Meter, General InformationThe thermal mass flow meter SF-586b was developed by the German companySoftflow.de GmbH and produced here in Germany for now more than 2 years. The Flow Meter preferred by Industrial, Environmental and Commercial customersfor a variety of applications. With the new SF-586b thermal mass flow meter, based on the old versiontype SF-586a (sold for more then 10 years), Softflow.de has developed a newmeasuring system which enclosed the old and proven technology together with avery new and high performance digital microprocessor technology. The basic Softflow.de technology is the utilizing of a separate analogue controller forthe over temperature controlling instead a traditional drift prone Wheatstone Bridge. While doing a further development up to the new SF-586b we retained consistentlythe well-tried analogue controller for over temperature, but additional now amicroprocessor is controlling and, if necessary, adjusting automatically the resultsfrom the analogue controller. The advantages of the analogue controller: high resolution, very fast. The advantages of the digital controller: long time stable, very high absoluteaccuracy.Summarized both functions together guarantee a very long time stable electronicevaluation for calorimetric probes with excellent electrical characteristics. For service and support display menus available which give information about theimportant probe characteristics (reference temperature, heater temperature, powerconsumption of the heater and over temperature. For testing the electronic without sensor a simulator is available.Optionally many interfaces possible, also firmware update/upgrade is possible.Thermal Mass Flow Meter, The General BenefitsDirect mass flow. No temperature or pressure transmitters are necessary.Usable in high temperature ranges up to 400 C.High Accuracy and Repeatability.Precision measurement and excellent repeatability.Wide ratio measuring range 1:100.Softflow.de calibration from 0,6Nm/s to 60Nm/s.Not meaningful pressure drop, nearly no influence to the flow.No moving parts. Long time accuracy and long life time.Dirt Insensitive but if needed, simple cleaning.Easy installation and convenient mounting.page 2 of 12

The SF-586b Calorimetric Measurement PrincipleThe calorimetric measurement based on the physically principle of heat transferfrom a heated element to the ambient medium, for e.g. air. This is effected by the velocity, by the density (temperature and pressure) andby the characteristic of the medium. The amount of needed energy is a function of the temperature difference t andthe mass flow. The thermal mass flow meter SF-586b is using the following method. The temperature difference (over temperature) t between the reference sensor(medium temperature) and the heater sensor is controlled electrical constant by ananalogue controller**(CTA Constant Temperature Anemometer). This controller together with a high power operational amplifier enables a very fastand absolute precise adjustment of the needed power for keeping the overtemperature constant. This controller was also installed in the old SF-586a. Thecontroller is working with a very high accuracy and also very fast, but from time totime a recalibration of the electronic was necessary. The reason: also very highquality analogue components are changing over the time the electrical characteristicsThe SF-586b are using also the traditional analogue controller, but additional a digital12-Bit controller is controlling the over temperature also.A microprocessor controls and corrects the over temperature nearly without anyinfluence of analogue drifting. This controller is working ratiometric and therefore the electronic evaluation has anexcellent long time stability.** Softflow.de GmbH do not utilize a traditional Wheatstone Bridge. All the disadvantages of a Wheatstone Bridge, means electrical drifting,no lead length compensation, difficult adjustment and many moreare not existing in the SF-586b.page 3 of 12

The SF-586b Insertion Thermal Mass Flow MeterThe evaluation unit is supplied with an illuminated LC-dot matrix display, with 4 lines/16 characters, for volume and mass flow and also for the totalizers. For applications in large diameters an automatically format switchingenables the display to show the correct data for volume and mass flow andalso for the totalizer. The flow is additional indicated by a horizontal bar graph.Format is 0-100% related to the maximum flow.Shown in the display also the temperature of the medium, the power consumptionand the over temperature of the heater element (flow sensor).Standard over temperature setting of Softflow.de probes are 20 C or 40 C.The power consumption (in mW) of the flow sensor at velocity zero comparing withthe factory settings allows the detection of a dirty sensor. The flow proportional analogue output is free configurable(0 –5/10V oder 0/4 –20/24mA).Selectable ranges: volume flow, mass flow, velocity or temperatureThe Relay output (changeover contact) is configurable as impulse or switch point.Selectable ranges for impulse: totalizer for volume or for massSelectable ranges for switch point: volume flow, mass flow, velocity or temperatureAll configurations and adjustments, also reading out data and settings are possiblevia RS232 interface. With a special adapter firmware upgrades are possible. Before shipment the unit can be configured according to customer's specificationsThese Factory settings are:Display volume and volume flow or mass and mass flowOutput end value, impulse value, switching point / hysteresis, baud rate, address, mean value, off-set and low flow suppressionAll these configurations can changed and also restored by customer.page 5 of 12

For the power supply the following options available :12VDC(9-18VDC)24VDC(18-36VDC)115-230VACEach SF-586b is calibrated by Softflow.de in his own wind channel, range 0,6Nm/sup to 60Nm/s. The data of this calibration curve are normalized for:Conductivity0 CTemperature0 CPressure1,01325barAt the end a second test in the wind channel for controlling and writing the protocoland certificate. For housing of electronic evaluation and probe the protection class is IP65.The connecting of the probe (both sensor elements) in four-wire techniqueenables a complete compensation of measurement errors and therewith a highprecision measurement independent of any influence by cable length or cablecharacteristic is possible. The evaluation signal input for both sensor elements are supplied with very highprecision instrumentation amplifiers. This, together with a modern microprocessor, gives a very high accuracy and anexcellent long time stability. The internal mathematic Spline interpolation between the 60 points of the curvegives additional a very high resolution in the measurement results, specially in thelow flow ranges. The insertion thermal mass flow meter SF-586b consist of an insertion probe, madeof stainless steel (1.4571 316SS) and a separate (remote) microprocessor signalevaluation (electronic converter) in a plastic housing. Protection class for both IP65.page 6 of 12
