In addition,January Term typically offers classes at a variety of domesticand international locations.Linfield was one of the first colleges in the Pacific Northwest.The college traces its roots to an institution established by theBaptists in 1849 in Oregon City. The school moved to McMinnvilleand was chartered by the Oregon Territorial Legislature as BaptistCollege at McMinnville in 1858. The name was later shortened toMcMinnville College. In 1922, the name was changed again whenFrances Ross Linfield donated several real estate holdings to theschool. In honor of the gift, the college renamed itself after her latehusband, the Rev. George Fisher Linfield.In 2020, Linfield College became Linfield University, witha College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and School ofNursing. Becoming Linfield University is more than a name andlogo change for the school; it’s a transformation. At an unprecedented time of change in higher education, Linfield continues togrow strategically to serve the needs of its students, today and inthe decades to come.While Linfield’s name and structure have evolved, a Linfieldeducation is unchanging. Linfield is a private university thatprovides integrated education in the liberal arts and sciences andin selected professional disciplines. The Linfield Online and Continuing Education (OCE)program began as a face-to-face program in 1975, witheight sites in Oregon and southwest Washington providingworking adults access to higher education. During the 1990sLinfield gradually transitioned these programs to an onlineformat. Today, OCE offers 10 majors, six minors and 19certificate programs fully online. Linfield awarded master’s degrees in education from the1970s through the 1990s. Graduate courses were restartedin 2019 with an English to Speakers of Other Languagesendorsement program in Education. The Masters of Sciencein Nursing program launches in 2020. Linfield’s Portland campus was established in 1982, whenthe college entered into an affiliation with Good SamaritanHospital and Medical Center and began offering a Bachelorof Science in Nursing. Today, Linfield’s nursing program is oneof the largest, and best known, in the state. In Spring 2021,Linfield students will begin attending courses on Linfield’snew Portland campus located in northwest Portland. With its flagship campus in the heart of wine country,Linfield has a strong partnership with the local wine industry.The Evenstad Center for Wine Education opened in 2018;Linfield has hosted the International Pinot Noir Celebrationsince 1987; and the Oregon Wine History Archive wasfounded at the college in 2011. The center prepares futureleaders of the wine industry through programs and activitiesthat include a wine studies major and minor, internships andinternational exchanges. In 2019, Linfield began a partnershipwith Ecole Superieure d’Agriculture (ESA) in Angers, France,which allows students to earn both a bachelor’s and master’sdegree as part of a five-year program. The Linfield Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division IIINorthwest Conference, with 40% of Linfield studentsparticipating in athletics. Men’s varsity sports include football,cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, baseball, indoorand outdoor track and field, tennis and golf. Women’s varsitysports include cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball,swimming, softball, indoor and outdoor track and field,tennis, golf and lacrosse. Through the 2019-20 academicyear, Linfield has enjoyed 64 consecutive winning seasonsin football, a national record at all levels of intercollegiatecompetition. The athletic teams have won a combined ninenational team championships in football (4), baseball (3),and softball (2), as well as 23 individual national titles intrack and field (15) and swimming (9). Linfield has also won194 team championships in the Northwest Conference.While Linfield has changed significantly since it was established in 1858, its purpose has remained constant — to teachstudents in an atmosphere of academic freedom that fostersintellectual rigor, creativity and a sense of personal and socialresponsibility.In 1976, Linfield began a student exchange program withKanto Gakuin University in Japan. Undergraduate Degrees and RequirementsResidencyLinfield’s curriculum seeks to broaden intellectual horizons,underscore the centrality of how one learns, provide a historicalcontext, relate ideas to social structures, and affirm the importanceof values in human life. The liberal arts curriculum is coherentand useful in preparing students to seek knowledge and improveskills throughout their lives. Linfield’s curriculum is designedto help people develop their full humanity, with an emphasison freedom of mind and spirit. It also illuminates their sharedcultural heritage, and involves students and teachers alike in thefundamental concerns upon which the future depends.At least 30 credits must be from Linfield University including20 of the last 30 credits, 15 credits in each major, and 10 creditsin each minor. Credits in residency do not include credit throughchallenge examinations, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, CLEP examinations, or portfolio evaluation credits.A student with at least 30 credits earned at Linfield may,with prior approval of the Curriculum Committee, spend thesenior year at a foreign university.nB.A. DegreeThe academic program is available on a year-round calendarwith 15-week fall and spring semesters, a four to five-week Januaryterm, and a 9 to 11-week summer term.
