Dear Prospective Nursing Student,Thank you for your interest in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC)! We are excitedabout assisting you in discovering your new career options in Nursing. Most questions should be answered in this packet ofinformation; any unanswered questions can be addressed during a meeting with a Nursing Student Success Advisor. To schedule anappointment with a Nursing Student Success Advisor, call (405) 682-7849. Walk-in appointments are also available most days. OCCCoffers a seventy-one to seventy-two (71-72) credit hour nursing program. There are three (3) nursing pathway options. Graduatesof this state approved program are eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEXRN). There are three (3) nursing pathway options:Traditional Nursing Pathway admits up to 72 students each fall and spring semesters. This competitive option is designedto be completed in 5 semesters although students frequently take longer to complete the general education and support courses.Once selected for admission, the Traditional cohort is comprised of 4 semesters of core nursing courses. Fall cohort – class meets 2 times a week each morning from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; lab and clinicals aremandatory with varying times/dates. A schedule is provided at orientation. Spring cohort – class meets 2 times a week each evening from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; lab and clinicals aremandatory with varying times/dates. A schedule is provided at orientation. Alert: labs and clinicals aremandatory and predominantly scheduled during daytime hours.Career Ladder Pathway admits up to 72 students in the fall semester and is designed for individuals with an unencumberedOklahoma LPN or Paramedic license. This option is designed to be completed in 3 semesters. Students typically continue to work asan LPN or Paramedic while in the program. Fall entry only – Nursing Transitions class meets one day a week from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. this pathway is a hybrid coursedesign with the theory delivered in an online module format. Labs are mandatory. There are no clinicals for this course. NursingProcess III and Nursing Process IV classes meet one day a week from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Lab and clinicals are mandatorywith varying dates/times. A schedule is provided at orientation. Baccalaureate to Associate Degree Nurse Accelerated Pathway (BADNAP) is a hybrid course format designedfor individuals who have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree. This rigorous pathway is compressed into 10 months.Approximately 45 students are admitted twice per year in January and June. Summer and Spring cohorts - class meets 1 day each week from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; lab and clinicals are mandatorywith varying times/dates. Clinicals are typically two days per week scheduled predominately on the weekends.Individuals with military commitments or religious practices falling on the weekend should consider the TraditionalNursing Pathway since mandatory clinicals are scheduled on the weekends. ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN NURSING PROGRAM CURRICULUM PATTERNTRADITIONAL PATHWAYRequirements to obtain an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing, traditional program, are 36 credit hours in nursingcourses, 19-20 credit hours in general education courses, 3 credit hours in life skills course (BIO 1023) and 13 credit hoursin support courses for a total of 71-72 credit hours. A minimum grade of "C" must be achieved in all courses required forthis degree, with the exception of POLSC 1113 and HIST 1483 or 1493 (a grade of "D" is minimum). The Program isapproved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing,Inc. STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION1. Admission to Oklahoma City Community College (ALERT: nursing applications will not be considered if this step is notcompleted and an OCCC email has not been created):a. Apply to OCCC at http://www.occc.edu/future/ Click on the “Apply for Admission” tab on the left side of page.b. Applicants who have attended OCCC in the past will need to reactivate their account through the same procedureas described in “a” above but will be redirected to “readmission form” for returning students.2. Schedule an appoint with Student Success Advisor:a. Prior to submitting a nursing application (after being admitted to the college), it would be helpful to schedule time tospeak with a Health Professions Student Success Advisor located in the main building across from Admissions. Noappointment is required, but appointments are encouraged. Students may request an appointment by calling 405682-7849. The Student Success Advisor will provide you information on the application process, evaluate yourtranscripts and advise about pending course work and issues regarding GPA, etc.b. Make sure all course work from other institutions will transfer. Any coursework taken at another institution thatdoesn’t match OCCC course name/number may need to have prior approval via a “Course Substitution” form. Theapproved course substitution forms must be uploaded into the nursing application prior to the deadline. This maytake several days or weeks to complete; it is advised students start this process well ahead of the deadline.3. Submit your application onlinea. All Nursing applications must be submitted online with official documents uploaded, via the application link postedon the nursing webpage http://occc.edu/health/nursing.htmlb. Any student who has requestedacademic forgiveness must submit a letter with the nursing application to inform the selection committee that the requesthas been made.If the applicant has not attempted or completed the minimum of 12 credit hours at a regionally accredited institution ofhigher learning in 1000-level or above science, math, social science, or English courses excluding credit awarded byadvanced standing, a High School Graduation GPA of 2.75 or a GED Transcript Reflecting Average Score of 530 may beutilized. The High School Graduation GPA or GED Average Score may NOT be used if a College Retention GPA asspecified is lower than 2.5.4. Classic ACCUPLACER Reading Placement Test Score . Minimum score of 70 on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)Scores must be no older than five years from the application deadline. The test may be taken a maximum of two times perapplication period.Selection Process – once students have met the required minimum TEAS test score of 70, students are ranked according tohighest GPA (undergraduate only). Students are placed in two tiers. Students in the top tier are selected before the lower tier.1. Top Tier - those who have completed a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and all required prerequisite courses prior to theapplication deadline. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university must be conferred on official transcript.2. NESA Clinical RequirementsAll students must view the required NESA (Nursing Educators and Service Administrators) videos and pass the NESA exam,with a score of 85%, annually prior to attending clinical rotations. This will be explained in detail at the orientation.3. myClinicalExchangemyClinicalExchange is provided to facilitate the cooperative scheduling, coordination and arrangement of clinical rotationschedules and opportunities among hospitals, schools and students. Information available on myClinicalExchange includeshospital orientation material and the student’s weekly clinical assignment. To serve this end, the student is required to createan account with myClinicalExchange, which will be accessible to coordinators, staff and other administrators (who have accessto the service) at your school and at the various hospitals where you are scheduled for clinical rotations. The cost to studentsfor myClinicalExchange is 39.50 per year due at the time of registration on myClinicalExchange. Students will be notified ofthe need to update their account yearly, if necessary. Failure to register will result in the student being unable to attend clinical,which may affect progression in the nursing program.
