The RAAF traces its history back to theAustralian Flying Corps, which was established inSeptember 1912 and commenced flying operationsat Point Cook on 1 March 1914.The Australian Flying Corps (AFC) was part of theAustralian Imperial Force (AIF) during World WarI until both were disbanded in 1919 following thewar. The Australian Air Force was formed inMarch 1921 and prefix “Royal”, approved byKing George V three months later, becameeffective on 13 August 1921. The RAAF was thesecond Royal air arm to be formed in the BritishCommonwealth and by end of World War II wasthe fourth largest air force in the world.Since World War II, the RAAF has evolvedthrough technology and expertise to becomea highly effective fifth-generation air forceoperating in defence of Australia and ournational interests.

Neither species inhabits the Norfolk’smain island, probably due to the presence of the Polynesian and Black Rats,but both are found on Phillip Island.Described on Lord Howe Island in 1874 and first recorded in the Norfolkgroup in 1978, the Lord Howe Island Skink grows to around eightcentimetres and is a rich metallic-bronze to olive colour, with small brownflecks along its body. First described on Lord Howe Island in 1885, theLord Howe Island Gecko is heavily built and also grows to around eightcentimetres. This smooth-scaled gecko is peppered with darker spots,and a series of W-shaped markings fade towards its flanks.

However, the stamp’s issue year and country of origin are not visible.
