Responding to selection criteriaSome job applications, especially government positions, professional appointments and larger businesses, require you to address key selection criteria (KSC).The selection criteria are a list of the skills, knowledge and work experience you need to get the job. Theyare used by the employer to shortlist applicants for the interview process.Responding to selection criteria also gives you a chance to assess whether you really want the job and howsuited you are for the position. If you are required to write a statement of claims against the selection criteria, then you must be aware thisis likely to be the most important document in your application. It is used to assess you against otherapplicants, with scores often given for each criterion. Usually, these scores are then totaled and thoseapplicants with the highest scores are granted an interview.Selection criteria responses will often need to be accompanied by a covering letter and your resume, whichmust both be tailored to the position. To address the key selection criteria, you will need to explain in detail how well you meet each one. To beconsidered for an interview, you need to show that you meet the essential criteria — sometimes there maybe additional criteria listed as “Desirable” and you should also respond to these, although generally thedesirable criteria are not ranked by the employer as being as important as the key criteria.Application packageFor some job applications, particularly government, you may need to obtain an application package fromthe employer (this is often available to download, if the job has been advertised online). The selectioncriteria may be placed on the advertisement, but usually you will also read the position descriptionprovided in the application package, to fully understand the job requirements. The application package will also provide you with instructions as to what your application must include.Page 1

Here is a sample of a job advertisement requesting applicants to address the key selection criteria. On thefollowing page, we have provided examples of how to address these.Page 2

Examples of how to address key selection criteriaEmployers are often inundated with applications, so anything that makes reading yourapplication easier will be beneficial. Using dot points is a useful way to get detailedinformation across in an easy-to-read, space saving manner. However, be careful of ‘over use’ - always try to combine with paragraphs as well.Page 3

One of the most common mistakes is not giving concrete examples in your responses. Ifyou are to make statements like ‘I am well versed in the provision of superioradministrative support’, then be prepared to back this up with actual examples of timesyou have demonstrated this, including the outcomes.Page 4

Many selection criteria are madeup of several parts and you willneed to address each one ofthese.Try to address each section separately identifying the skills they are looking for.In the above example, they are looking for twoskills: organisational and problem solving skills. It is sometimes useful to havean opening paragraph and thenclearly outline your exampleswith a heading. This is particularly useful if you would like touse more than one detailed example.Page 5

Try to avoid sounding ‘perfect’. Although the employer wants to know you can do thejob, try not to reduce your credibility saying things like “I always contribute positively tothe team”. Rather, say: “I am committed to being a positive team member andcontributor”.When answering ‘desirable’ criteria, you may be able to use examples from your extracurricular and non-work activities. Also, don’t be afraid to do some research if necessary to answer this question!Page 6

Responding to selection criteria also gives you a chance to assess whether you really want the job and how suited you are for the position. If you are required to write a statement of claims against the selection criteria, then you must be aware this is like
