3South Hampstead High School Co-curricular options 2019 – 2020We are proud to be a busy, buzzing school witha lot going on. Each term we offer over 100co‑curricular clubs and societies before, duringand after school, providing every girl with ampleopportunities to have fun, to excel and to thrivebeyond the classroom.Pupils are actively encouraged to try their hand at somethingdifferent — to discover new interests, to develop new skills,to take time out from their studies and to engage with girlsfrom other years — as well as to launch and lead societiesthemselves. House points and ‘colours’ are awarded to girls whoshow exceptional levels of participation and commitment in cocurricular activities.This booklet represents the incredible range and depth of clubsand societies on offer over the course of the year, from sportand music to creative and academic. There is a ‘co-curricularfair’ each September so that girls can find out more aboutwhat’s on offer as well as how to sign up.The full timetable is published via Firefly before the start ofeach term, so that girls can create their own bespoke cocurricular programme throughout the year, with the guidanceof their tutor if needed. We could be looking at greatexplorers of the past, ancient fashion, modern issues throughancient eyes, festivals. it's up to you.In this club we will do a short dictation from a French literarytext; there will be no competitive edge! Girls will correct theirown work at the end of the session and move on. This exercisehelps with vocabulary, grammar, spelling and listeningcomprehension. Mainly Year 10 upwards but very confidentlinguists and native speakers may attend too.Classic Cartoon reading, drawing on Asterix/Tintin tobegin with.10 11GERMAN7If you would like to learn more about the ancient world andexplore subjects like Greek mythology and Roman life, comealong! Design and make your own mosaic, plan and host aRoman feast, create a Classical board game, star in an ancientplay, and de-code some hieroglyphics.10 11 L6 U6If you enjoy German and would like to expand your knowledge,or are not yet studying German but would like a taster, do comealong. We will explore German through games and quizzes,clips and film. We will learn more about German culture andtraditions by exploring popular festivals in German-speakingcountries and may even try some traditional Christmas baking.

Comealong to UKLO to train for the Linguistics Olympiad whichhappens every February.11 L6 U6MUSIC OF THE FRENCHSPEAKING WORLDDevelop an understanding of the huge range of Frenchlanguage music out there that is rarely heard in the UK.10 11 L6 U6READING SPANISHFOR PLEASURE8910If you are interested in reading and learning about the Spanishspeaking culture, and you'd like to improve your language skills,this is the club for you!DebatingDEBATING CLUB— JUNIOR789DEBATING SOCIETY— SENIOR10 11 L6 U6MODEL UNITED NATIONS78910 11 L6 U6Weekly informal debates on topical issues. If you likearguing then this is the place for you. Learn about the BritishParliamentary style of debating and use it to destroy youropponent’s point of view. No experience needed but, for thosewho are keen, there are external competitions and friendlies.The place to be if you like arguing. Weekly informal debates ontopical issues and preparation for external competitions such asthe Oxford Schools, Cambridge Schools, Debating Matters andGDST events. Excellent for confidence-building, honing yourpublic speaking skills and generally being argumentative. Noexperience necessary, just turn up with an opinion.Learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the UnitedNations. Debate various issues from the point of view of acountry at the United Nations. We will also take delegations toCROYMUN (GDST Model UN day in November) and HABSMUN(large school MUN weekend in February/March).

The brief changes every year but the challengeis to create and prototype a product that could be sold in themuseum shop. Winners will work with a team of well-knowndesigners to develop their idea into a real product.The chance to learn and practise fashion/textiles-based skillsincluding basic and advanced hand/machine sewing, clothesmaking techniques, clothes pattern drafting, textile design andfashion illustration.Digital, Coding & RoboticsBYTESIZE CODING78910 11 L6 U6CYBER DISCOVERY910 11 L6 U6Come and join our Coder in Residence for a fun, fast-pacedclub that will show you how to create and build your own webapps, pages and projects, using industry standard codingenvironments: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. No experiencenecessary.Cyber Discovery, a GCHQ initiative, will immerse you inchallenges, tools and games, designed to introduce you to thecyber security industry. Develop your coding skills but alsolook into how governments and organisations can detect andprevent cybercrime. The programme is designed to identifyproblem-solving skills, logical thinking, and to spark enthusiasmfor the subject, no matter what your interests are. Are you the one who always has to helpyour friends and family solve their tech issues? If the answeris yes then you should apply to be a South Hampstead DigitalLeader! Digital Leaders are pupils who love and are adept atusing technology and willing to share their knowledge and skillswith others. If you want to develop your leadership skills andget even better at using technology, this is the place for you.You will be the first pupils to test new equipment and help staffuse technology by running training sessions for them. Last yearour Digital Leaders attended the annual GDST Techathon, wona prize for their animation at the ChildNet film competition andcontributed an article for the Teaching & Learning newsletter.Come along to work out how to design, build and programmeour VEX Robots. We hold a special competition for GDSTschools every year and regularly win lots of prizes.Drama & PerformanceDRAMA CLUB7DRAMA CLUB8DRAMA CLUB9A Drama club just for Year 7s to build confidence, and learnhow to improvise through games and exercises. One of these plays will then be selected to enterinto the new GDST One Act Play Festival in the summer term.In the spirit of the mystery and suspense serials broadcaston early radio, you will create, write, perform and record anon-going mystery/suspense programme. Instead of a ‘mysteryhour’, you will produce 2 to 5 minute episodes in length everytwo weeks. If you like to share ideas, write scripts, perform,make sound effects, record or promote the show, please come.All contributions welcome, no matter how small. Many differenttalents will be needed to make a thrilling, suspenseful serial.Audition to be in a topical, funny and moving play — the firstfull length play to be performed in the new Waterlow Hall.If you don't fancy being in the limelight, there will be manyopportunities backstage: stage management, costume andmake-up, lighting and sound, and even assistant directing.Join the cast and crew of an entirely independent ensembleproduction. There are four components of the award: volunteering,skills, expedition and physical; all have to be completedsuccessfully to achieve the award. The Bronze DofE practice andassessed expeditions take place at weekends at the start of thesummer term. There is a training and information session for allparticipants on the 11 examination day in January.Open to anyone in Year 10 who has completed their Bronzeaward. There are four components of the award: volunteering,skills, expedition and physical; all have to be completedsuccessfully to achieve the award. The Silver DofE practiceexpedition takes place near Amersham over three days.The Silver DofE assessed expedition takes place in Derbyshire,with a stay in a hostel the night before the walk. There is atraining and information session for all participants on the 11 examination day in January.Open to anyone aged 16 years or older who has completed theirSilver Award. Training and map work occur in lunchtimes andbefore school as well as on the 11 examination day in January.The practice expedition takes place in Derbyshire, during theMay half term, and the assessed expedition in the summerholidays in Yorkshire. At Gold level, there are five componentsof the award: volunteering, skills, expedition, physical and aresidential element — all have to be completed successfullyto achieve the award.
