Hughes Academy 2020-2021 Dress codeStudents will be expected to dress in an appropriate manner while on school property and whileparticipating in school-related activities. We encourage our students to take pride in their personalappearance, such that it does not disrupt student work or school order, become distracting to others, orviolate health and safety guidelines. Students must adhere to the uniform dress code set forth by theschool principal while on campus during the school day. If attending a school function in the evening,students must comply with the dress code of Greenville County Schools.Hughes Academy’s guidelines are as follows:Shirts: ANY SOLID COLOR COLLAREDSHIRT Shirts may have a small appropriatelogo over the pocket area. All shirts must have a collar and sleeves. Shirts made of 100% Lycra or Spandexare not permitted. Shirts may not have stripes on the collaror on the sleeves. All shirt tails must be long enough andtucked in at all times while on campusor on field trips. Turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks arepermitted. Long or short-sleeved t-shirts or tanktop camisoles in the same colors (solidcolor) are permitted, but they must beworn underneath the collared shirt. Only sweaters, sweater vests,sweatshirts, and light jackets that are ofsolid colors may be worn on top of thecollared shirt. No other items may beworn over the collared shirt. Girls: No cleavage showing. Tight fitting shirts,shorts, or pants are notpermitted. See-through shirtsshowing undergarmentsare not permitted. Boys: Jumpers are notpermitted.Pants, shorts, skirts, and dresses: NAVYBLUE, GRAY, BLACK OR KHAKI Denim of any color is not permitted(rivets normally indicate denim). Pants/shorts with only a drawstring,sweatpants, or overalls, may not beworn.The length of skirts, shorts, skorts,dresses, and jumpers must be 4 inches orless when measured from the top of theknee to the bottom of the fabric.Slits in the skirts, jumpers, or dressesmust be no more than 4 inches above thetop of the knee.All pants and shorts must be hemmed(No cut-offs allowed).Pant legs may not be tucked into socksor drag on the floor.A collared shirt must be worn underjumpers (girls).Dresses must have a collar.Dresses made of 100% Lycra orSpandex are not allowed.Undergarments should not be visible.Tights or leggings cannot be wornwithout a dress code length skirt or dressover them. No “fishnet” type stockingsare permitted. Leggings and tights mustbe solid dress code colors.Jogger style pants and shorts are notallowed (pants/shorts with elastic waistand or elastic around the ankle).Tying items of clothing around the waistis not permitted.Pants, shorts and skirts must be wornwith the waistline above the hips at alltimes.Oversized garments may not be worn.Outerwear: Coats may be worn but must be placedin the students book bag or hung neatlyon the back of their chair until lockersare provided. Once lockers are provided,outerwear must be stored in lockers. Sweaters and sweatshirts (no hoods)may be worn in class, but must be of

Hughes Academy 2020-2021 Dress code solid colors and have no writing orstripes.Lightweight jackets/pullovers may beworn in class but must be a solid color.Outerwear items may not be excessivelylong, and may not have a hood or logoother than pocket logos.A dress code shirt collar must be visibleunder outer garments at all times. Ifwearing outerwear, then the studentmust unbutton or unzip the outerwear sothat the collar is visible at all times.No hooded garments may be worn.Students may wear Hughes Academysweatshirts but not t-shirts over acollared shirt.Students may wear Hughes Academy(only) team sporting apparel unless ithas a hood. Slides, flip-flops, shower shoes orbedroom shoes are not permitted. Shoesmust have a hard or rubber sole.If students are wearing Crocs, then thestrap must stay on the back of the heelduring the school day. (Sport Mode)Shoes with heels over 2 1/2 inches maynot be worn.The only extra pair of shoes brought toschool should be those used for PE.Sandals may be worn if they have thestrap in place at the heel.Shoe-laces must be tied at all times.Shoes with lights and/or wheels are notpermitted. Shoes: Jewelry and Accessories: Sweatbands or headbands worn aroundthe forehead are not permitted. Headbands must be less than 3 incheswide and worn above the hairline. No hats of any kind, skullies, "do-rags",bandanas, or headbands created from abandana may not be worn. Facial, nose and/or tongue rings are notpermitted. Mouth pieces are not permitted. Spiked necklaces and/or bracelets arenot permitted. This includes chokers,wristbands, dog leashes, chains, etc. Jelly bands/Silly Bandz are notpermitted.Make-up that is disruptive to theeducational setting is not permitted.Decorative symbols/shapes shaved intothe head are not permitted. Students maybe assigned ISS or OSS until thesymbols or shapes are removed.Feather hair extensions are notpermitted.Natural or artificial hair of non-humancolor is not permitted. Students will beassigned ISS or OSS until the nonhuman color hair is removed.Mardi Gras style beads are notpermitted.Earring studs must measure a diameterof no more than ¼ inches.Necklaces longer than 18 inches are notpermitted (shouldn't hit beyond thesternum).Large hoop earrings are not permitted.Non-prescription contacts or glasses arenot permitted.Sunglasses or costume masks coveringthe eyes or face may not be worn unlessthe student has a medical note. MedicalMasks excluded for protection fromCOVID.Masks worn due to COVID must followour dress code policy and be of solidcolor. **Scarves may be worn to school but mustbe placed in the locker upon arrival.Curlers, combs, and picks may not beworn in the hair.No large purses or fanny packs areallowed during the school day. A smallbag for gym clothes may be carried forstudents going to and from PE. Onceschool returns to five days, students willbe provided lockers and book bags willbe kept in lockers throughout the schoolday.Items that could be used as a weaponmay not be worn or brought to school.** Mask Protocol and Discipline:All students must wear a mask when unable tosocially distance while at school, during school-

Hughes Academy 2020-2021 Dress codesponsored programs, or when under the controland care of the School District unless a studenthas a disability that would prevent the wearingof a mask or a student in K3, K4, K5 or 1stgrade who is unable to wear a mask as a result ofthat child’s age. Students may also submitmedical documentation to the school’sadministration, and any medical exemption willbe considered on an individual basis based uponthat medical documentation. Any student whocommunicates an absolute refusal to wear amask and is not willing to comply with therequirement will be assigned to the District’svirtual program.Executive Director of Student Services within 5school days of that decision. The ExecutiveDirector of Student Services will review thatappeal, which will include the reasons thestudent is challenging the decision, and obtainany necessary information from the school. Adecision will be rendered in writing by theExecutive Director of Student Services within 5school days of the date of the appeal. Anyfurther appeal must be directed in writing within3 school daysBelts: Schools should work with students whoinadvertently fail to wear a mask to teach themof the importance of wearing a mask and toremind those students of the requirement formasks to be worn around others. If a studentdemonstrates a pattern or continual failure ofwearing a mask then the following processshould be followed:1. If a student is not wearing a mask, thestaff member observing should addressand direct the student to put on his/hermask. The incident must be documentedwith the appropriate administrator andthe parent/guardian must be notified.2. On the second offense the sameprocess will be followed3. On the 3rd offense, the student will besent home for the remainder of theschool day and the parent/guardian willbe provided the option of enrolling thestudent in the virtual program for theremainder of the semester.4. On the 4th offense the student will besent home for the remainder of theschool day, will be suspended for twodays of in person attendance and theparent/guardian will again be given theoption of enrolling in the virtualprogram for the remainder of thesemester.5. A 5th offense will result inassignment to the virtual program forthe remainder of the semester.A decision by the school to assign a student tothe virtual program may be appealed to the Belts must be worn by all students if theitem of clothing is made with beltloops.Belt loops may not be cut off to avoidwearing a belt.No belts with large buckles. The beltand buckle may not contain words.Ribbon belts and scarves are permittedprovided they have loops and/orbuckles.All belts must be worn at the waistline.An extra belt must be kept in yourlocker (when we return to five days) orbackpack. This is a school supplyrequirement.Suspenders are not permitted.Students may not write on their arms, legs, orany visible part of their body with ink/paint, orcut themselves with blades to create a design.Also no visible stickers or appliques are allowedon the body. No visible tattoos.There will be certain dates throughout theschool year where students will have theopportunity to wear Greenville County Dresscode. On those dates, the following dress codeapplies: Clothing and/or accessories thatadvertise drugs, alcohol, weapons,anything suggestively profane, obscene,racial, and illegal or gang/neighborhoodrelated may not be worn or brought toschool.

If worn properly, pants,shorts, skirts/skorts should not need tobe held in place by the student’s hands.The length of properly worn shorts,skirts, and skorts must meet the lengthrequirement of 4” above the knee.Leggings, jeggings, exercise pants,tights, leotards, see-through pants, ortight fitting spandex type-pants may notbe worn as outer garments. If such itemsare worn, a blouse, dress, shirt, shorts,skirt, or sweater must be long enough tomeet the length of 4” above the knee.No holes above the knees. All holesabove the knee must be patched beforearriving at school.No tube tops, halter tops, tank tops, orspaghetti strap tops.Sheer or see-through shirts are notallowed.Blouses or dresses should not expose themidriff and/or cleavage while standingor seated.Dresses must meet the length of 4”above the knee.Bra straps and bra sides must not bevisible.Physical Education Dress Code:Students are required to dress out every day in aphysical education uniform. Dressing out for PEis a requirement due to safety and hygienepurposes. Students must wear a solid red or redHughes Academy (short or long sleeve)t-shirt along with gray shorts orsweatpants.o Shorts may not be tight orspandex.o Sleeveless shirts and polobutton down shirts are notpermitted.o Tights or Yoga pants may beworn, but must have dress codelength shorts over the top. Tennis shoes or sneakers with socks arerequired.o No boots, crocs, or open toedshoes No jewelryThe administration will make the final judgmenton the appropriateness of clothing and/orappearance and reserves the right to prohibitstudents from wearing any articles of clothing orother items which lead to or may foreseeablyresult in the disruption of or interference withthe school environment. In the event theadministration determines a student’s dress isinappropriate for school in accordance with thispolicy, the administration will either require thestudent to change, request that the student beplaced in ISS until a change of clothing isavailable or for the remainder of the school day.Book Bags: Due to Covid-19, students will notbe provided lockers until school returns to afive-day schedule. Students may bring a bookbag to school. However, students will beexpected to carry the book bag to each class andkeep all of your belongings inside the book bag.Consequences for dress code violations: First Offense: Documented WarningSecond Offense: Referral to Grade LevelAdministratorThird Offense: Repeat offenders will beaddressed by the administrative team andreferred to ISS/OSS.ID Badges: As part of our school district’scontinuing efforts to provide a safe learningenvironment, all middle school students andstaff will be required to wear Photo ID badges. Students must wear their ID badgewhenever they are on campus, on fieldtrips, or school functions. The photoside of the ID should be visible at alltimes. Students who do not have their IDbadges visible when they arrive in themorning will be directed to enterthrough the media center to receive atemporary ID and document the offense. Students should make every effort tokeep up with their ID badge and mustwear it every day. Lost, stolen, ordefaced ID badges must be replaced at a

All lanyardsare break-away for safety purposes.Student ID badges will also be used topurchase lunch and check out mediabooks as well as textbooks.During the first week of school,administrators will remind students iftheir ID is not properly displayed. Afterthis orientation period, students notwearing their ID badge will be subject todisciplinary action.
