John the Conqueroo: Refers to a root or tuber that possessesmagical powers, popular in hoodoo tradition. The root itself isnamed for High John the Conqueror, an African prince thatwas sold into slavery and subsequently passed into folklore asa mythical trickster figure. The root is often referred to in bluessongs and is sometimes carried in a mojo bag. Cuttin' Heads: Also known as "headcutting," the term refers toa competition between musicians where one player will try tooutdo another, entertaining an audience by outplaying oroutperforming a rival. A time-honored blues tradition, MuddyWaters and his bands were known as dangerous headcutterson the Chicago blues scene. "Back Door Man", written by Willie Dixon, was written forHowlin Wolf and it was the B-Side of "Wang Dang Doodle",also written by Dixon and performed by "The Wolf." Big Mama Thornton not only performed and had a hit with"Ball and Chain", which was made into a bigger hit by JanisJoplin, she was the first to record "Hound Dog", which islinked forever with Elvis Presley. Janis Joplin first did "Ball andChain" live in 1967 and the groups entire performance at theMonterey Pops Festival that year spring boarded the releaseof their first album "Cheap Thrills" the next year. Bo Diddley was told by Ed Sullivan that he wouldn't last sixmonths and was banned from appearing on the show after notplaying the song that Ed wanted him to play.
