discographyGitana Mora is an exaltation offemininity, feminine strength, sapience, fortitude, nurturing and the maintenanceof tradition and wisdom. The role of women in al-Andalus was crucialfor culture and knowledge, and today wecarry this matriarchy in our blood.Lalla is the heiress of the vestals of the oracles, of the magicians of the East and the priestesses ofthe white goddess, but she is also the one who treasures mysticism in Koranic study, can protectfrom the evil eye, and holds the strength of the eye over the hand (hand of Fatima). As soon as all this is forbidden, this wisdom is exclusively for love affairs, divination and healing,Buenaventura and other arts. (2020)Algarabya es is salt, the east wind, thelight of the south and the rhythm and flavour ofAndalusia.Cantiñas,tangos, bamberas, peteneras or serranas. A repertoire that sailsfrom one shore of the Mediterranean to theother, diving into the literary and musicaltraditions of both shores. (2016)La Banda Morisca Andalusian, Maghrebiand Middle Eastern music that accumulatesinfluences ranging from the rudiments offlamenco to the moaxajas of Andalusian origin. The repertoire of the album covers flamencopalos such as farrucas, rumbas, marianas, zambras, as well as romances. The Andalusian spell permeates “Algarabya”, thenew album by La Banda Morisca«The Andalusian charm of La bandaMorisca, which includes former Radio Tarifaand La Jambre, surrounds their new album,“Algarabya”, recorded in two weekends andlive to transmit the “organic and energeticsound” that characterises them and in whichthe band’s style is “consolidated”.José Cabral, guitarist, banjo and vocals inthe band, explains to Efe that this “spell” issomething that Andalusians carry inside them,“often without being aware of it”, and that itindirectly permeates all the creations of LaBanda Morisca. The guitarist compares “Algarabya”, an album of“consolidation that marks a clear and definitiveline of work”, with his previous project, whichwas a “declaration of intentions” but whichseemed more like a “salad of musicians andsongs” than an album “of his own”.This new album was started a year ago butwas scrapped in the middle because the bandmembers were not happy with the resultbecause, according to Cabral, it sounded “toomuch” like a studio.“We decided to throw it all away because itwas too artificial and didn’t reflect our sound. So we all spent a couple of weekends inthe studio together to record as if we werelive. That’s how we got an album that doesrepresent us,” he explains. This need for a “direct” sound with “a lot ofenergy” was brought about by the departureof the percussionist who accompanied themin the first project in 2013 and the incorporationinto the group of Andrés Tomás Rodríguez, who is a drummer with “a lot of strength”.JoseMari Cala, vocals, JuanMi Cabral “Coyote”,electric bass, Antonio Torres, soprano and altosaxophones, complete the band members.Cabral explains that the theme of the newsongs is “universal” and “very Andalusian”,and that the songs about love and heartbreakshare the limelight with lyrics about Andalusiaand “its virtue”.“There is also a traditional touch and influenceof the profane love around which the songs wewere inspired by revolved, in which it is difficultto distinguish whether we are talking aboutlove for the lover or love for God”.“Algarabya” draws from the deepest and mostrural flamenco, from the corpus of medievalAndalusian music and from the wholeMediterranean, including the Maghreb andSyria, that is, “everything that Andalusianmusic means with all its roots”.La Banda Morisca, who are currently on tourin the United States, will present “Algarabya” atthe Sala Galileo in Madrid on 14 April. »EFE for La VanguardiaMadrid. The Moorish Bandat the Institut du MondeArabe in Paris«Between the 13th and 15th centuries, theMoorish Band was the frontier separating theArab-Andalusian Nasrid kingdom of Granada fromthe Christian kingdoms of Aragon and Castile. In this no-man’s land, traders, nomads andChristian and Muslim fugitives, as well as the firstgypsies who arrived on the peninsula, probablycrossed and cohabited. All this amalgam of influences crystallised inthe forms and sensibility of what would later beknown as Cante Jondo.La Banda Morisca is a project born out ofexperimentation, innovation and research intoAndalusian traditions. The recovery of the literaryand musical heritage of ancient al-Andalus andthe Mediterranean strip has been and continuesto be a key element in the consolidation of thisproject.Likewise, the training and trajectory of itsmembers has been a determining factor inachieving the symbiosis between individual andcollective experience. Their desire to continueinnovating and their creativity make up aunique artistic identity in the field of folk and rootsmusic. »Jordi Batallé for RFI FranceParis. March 27th 2017
