“It’s amazing whenthings start fittingtogether and a songbecomes more thanthe sum ofits parts.”One thing we know about Darren Jones Quite often after a few drinks the quiet andintrospective Daz morphs seamlessly andamusingly into ‘Fun Daz’. But on a moreprofessional note, Darren Jones is ElevatorRecording Studios house engineer, whohas been working his engineering magicon a multiple of music projects for the pastseven years at our Cheapside studio inLiverpool City Centre.Having worked with the likes of The Wombats, The Maccabees and Ian McCullochto name a few we had a chat to talk pastexperiences, how he started out in theindustry and who he’d like to work with inthe future.First things first – what’s your role asa sound engineer? My role can vary from project to project, depending on how hands-on the produceris, if there is one, and how well the bandknows how they want to sound. Overallit’s my job to capture the sounds so thatthey suit the particular song that is beingrecorded. To make sure everything fitstogether in a way that the band/artist wantsand that works for the song. What do you love the most about yourjob?Experimenting. I love trying out new ideas, unusual mic techniques, trying to get interesting sounds that are unique to a particular recording. It’s amazing when things startfitting together and a song becomes morethan the sum of its parts. How did you get started in the industry?I took a course in music production, usedthe studio over weekends to record friendsbands. I made a demo for one band thatended up getting signed to B Unique (TheAlterkicks). They chose to use me to recordtheir B-Sides and used some of my soundson their album. That led to engineering onthe first Wombats album and I started getting more work with other bands in variousdifferent studios after that. What’s been the best music projectyou’ve worked on?That’s a tough one. I have loved lots ofsessions for different reasons. It was aprivilege to engineer Bill Ryder-Jones’album “If”. Musically, that was probably themost diverse project that I have workedon. It was recorded on location in variouschurches around Liverpool and in Elevator. It was amazing to work with so many different and great musicians including the entirephilharmonic orchestra. The album soundsgreat and I’d definitely recommend gettinga copy.Another of my favourite moments fromthe past few years was when I worked withThe Fall. Mark E Smith insisted on singingin the kitchen in Elevator, I had to connectabout 10 leads together so that they wouldreach down to the bottom floor. I also had amemorable experience on one of my morerecent Wombats sessions. I found myselfstood next to Les Dennis who, wearing aninflatable Santa costume, was asking mehow long I thought he’d beneeded for as he “had a funeral to get tolater that afternoon”. It was a bit like a scenefrom Extras. The Maccabees “Wall of Arms”session was great too, as was Clinics lastalbum and I’ve really enjoyed working withIan McCulloch recently; it’s too hard to picka favourite. If you could choose any artist/band towork with, who would it be and why? That’s easy. Jan Terri. Do a search for hersong “Losing You” on YouTube and you’llsee why.Of all the studios you’ve worked in,what do you like about Elevator atCheapside? It’s a very unique space with lots of character, both visually and sonically. Moststudios are based around a pretty genericdesign and can be quite clinical. With Elevator the studio has been designed to fitaround the natural aesthetic of the building and as of this you can use the space insome interesting and unusual ways whichcan’t be done outside of that building. Youcan really take advantage of the studiosown sonic fingerprint, especially withdrum sounds. Also, there is a really homelyfeel to the building. It feels closer to recording at home than any other studio I haveworked in.What would be the major reasons togo into a professional studio over ahomerecording set-up?Aside from the posh mics and equipmentthe big advantage that a professional studiogives you is the actual physical space insideit. A larger room opens up many more possibilities with regards to how sounds can becaptured; this is especially true with drumsounds. There is also the benefit of a bandbeing able to play together, which is notusually possible in most home setups. Theengineer plays an important role too. Anyone can have access to recording equipment nowadays, but these are just toolsused in the process of capturing sounds. It’sthe way these tools are used that can helpto make a great recording and this lies inthe hands of the engineer.Do you have any advice for youngpeople who want to become soundengineers?Get recording as much as possible. Findpeople to record, do it for free. Just try andget as much experience as possible. Makesure this is what you really want to do; it’snot easy to find and sustain work. Keepknocking on doors until someone answers. If you’d like Daz for your next recording session pleasecontact him atdazjones2010@yahoo.co.uk or if you’d like to use ElevatorStudios at Cheapside thenplease contact info@elevatorstudios.comFor more information about Elevator Studios please visitwww.elevatorstudios.com4
