The NGS conference committee has createda powerful program of virtual events for individualfamily historians, societies, and organizations thatstretch over five days, 17-21 May 2021.On behalf of NGS, I want to thank the VirginiaGenealogical Society (VGS), the 2021 SupportingHost Society. Mary O’Brien Vidlak, CG, presidentof VGS, and Teresa Kelley, local Conference Chair,led the committee that tirelessly helped shape andplan the 2021 conference originally scheduled totake place in Richmond, Virginia. The VGS team wasinstrumental in helping transition the conferenceto an all-virtual program. I also want to thank themany members of the national NGS team, includingmembers of our board, staff, speakers, conferencecommittee, and volunteers who made this excellentprogram possible.The NGS Family History Conference is created forfamily history researchers at all levels—beginner,intermediate, and advanced. The breadth of sessiontopics presented as part of NGS Live! and theeighty-five on-demand sessions are designed forattendees to personalize their learning experienceand build their skills in diverse areas including BCGSkillbuilding, DNA, African American and HeritageResources, Immigration, Land and Military Records,Migration, Methodology, Religion, Writing andDocumentation, and much more.Organizational mentoring and assistance are nowan important part of our annual event. DuringNGS Virtual Family History Conference 17–21 May 2021the conference, we will collaborate with societyleaders, librarians, and archivists to share ideasand strengthen our genealogical community. Forthose who help manage organizations that offergenealogical support, we have a full day, Focus onSocieties, devoted to lectures such as Communicatingto Members, Managing Events, and Going Virtual.The SLAM! Idea Showcase event will allow attendeesto benefit from presentations by informationspecialists who serve genealogists and to learn moreabout successful endeavors that we can adapt for ourown organizations.The full week of virtual events is described in thisprogram. We wish we were able to welcome you to ourwonderful state in person as we had intended. Unfortunately, COVID-19 disruptedthose plans. NGS was compelled to change to this virtual program due to ongoing statemandates in regard to COVID-19 and their concern for the well-being of all. Althoughwe are disappointed to not be able to greet you in Richmond, we know you will enjoythe presentations and activities of the conference.The two days of NGS 2021 LIVE! offer terrific sessions for all family historians. Theprogram on Wednesday opens with a presentation on tracking migrating Virginians.Throughout the day and on into Thursday, there are multiple presentations to helpdevelop your genealogical skills and enhance your knowledge, including manysessions with a focus on Virginia. Thursday ends with our VGS sponsored event—avisit from the Marquis de Lafayette, the Frenchman whose support led to America’sindependence.The opportunity to learn continues in June with the On-Demand Lecture Series.These lectures cover an array of subjects, including six lectures on African Americangenealogy, four lectures concentrating on Migration, and nine lectures on Virginiagenealogy.
