PARENTING WITH LOVE & LOGICSome people say, "Kids these days are wimps!" Wehear it again and again in the news: "Too muchcoddling, too much hovering, and too much overprotection have created a generation of young adultswho can’t get dressed each morning without parentalintervention."Before elaborating on some solutions to thehovercraft crisis, I'd like to applaud the many parentswho are still raising kids with common sense, selfcontrol, and grit. Kudos also to the wonderfullyresponsible young adults I meet every day. They arestill out there!Yep hovering has reached a zenith. So are vaguenotions about what we ought to do instead. Someauthors suggest giving children free rein to run withscissors, roam dark streets at night, and wire 220voltage appliances unsupervised. A totally hands-offapproach is their motto.A life lived with no risk is a life not lived.Has my child been allowed to blow it when the "pricetags" were small? If a child has a history of being over-protected, aparent may want to start by giving more freedomover smaller issues instead of suddenly giving greatfreedom over much larger ones.Have I provided the training required for my child tohandle this risk safely? For example, if I allow my children to use thelawnmower, have I shown them how to do so safely?Have we practiced using the mower together?Offering training helps our children experience thejoy of conquering risks independently. What is my characteristic style of parenting?Going to extremes is never healthy. Instead, wiseparents consider each specific situation and askthemselves the following questions:What are the real risks?Too frequently, we forget that we cannot eliminate allrisk from our lives or our children's. We can only askourselves, "Is this really a life-and-death issue?"Am I removing the joy by trying to remove the risk?Great parents do their best to allow their childrenthe freedom to make mistakes, experience theconsequences, and solve the problems theyencounter. Great parents also protect and rescuefrom time to time. How might you answer thefollowing?Do I protect or rescue most of the time,or do I tend to err on the side of allowingmy kids to experience life and learn from it?The Ashley School will be having a strategic planning meeting on April13, at 7:00 PM to determine the plan for the school during the next 2-5years. This is a standard plan required by the state that just insuresthat the district is looking at enrollment, costs and building and groundson a regular basis with a plan in place for improvements. This will beheld in the high school gym. The monthly school board meeting willfollow the strategic planning meeting.PAGE 3

FISHING FOR STUDENTS’ SUCCESSOne quarter left and then another school year in the books. I keepsaying how fast this year has gone, but I really can’t believe how fast ithas gone. With this being our last quarter, students need to finishstrong. Parents, make sure your child/children are bringing bookshome. I see a lot of students just getting by, not giving a 100% effort. As I watch in the halls after school, not a lot of books going home.REMEMBER. we have one quarter left - don’t get that spring feveruntil May 20.April will be busy with the usual spring testing and for our students, itis a priority. Some testing has been done already. Please rememberwhen you receive those notices regarding testing, work withus to make certain that your child has plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast to insure they areready. This is very important. I was reading an article not too long ago, and it talked about howparents should do the following to help theirchild succeed during standardized testing:first, the parent should explain how these testswill show learning growth. Next, limitactivities the night before the test, makingsure the child gets plenty of sleep. The lastpiece of advice from this article is giving thema high energy breakfast with proteins andcarbohydrates. These tips would be a big helpto both your child and the school. We have put this in the newsletter before, butI feel we need to again. If you are coming tothe school please check in with the office. Ihave seen a few people come out and just headto a teachers classroom. We don’t want the classrooms interruptedat any point. When the classroom teacher is in the middle ofteaching and someone comes in, it throws all the students off.The teacher than has to spend the next few minutes gettingstudents back on task. If you have something to drop off to yourchild bring it to the office, Teresa, Mr. Hauth, or myself will makesure the student will get it. We have a great group of teachers atour school that want to help every student achieve at theirhighest level. Please help our teachers achieve this. Thanks foryour cooperation on this matter.PAGE 5

We have really enjoyed celebratingReading during the month of March. The activities have been fun and we lovedthe popcorn. Some of our other favoritedays were: joke day, cereal box reading, where is our teacher, read to our stuffedanimal and guest reader day.In Math we have been learningcomparison symbols and doing really well.We have practiced a lot with the website,www.starfall.com(Math Journey activity) andwww.sheppardsoftware.com.The McIntosh County Spelling Bee took place in Ashley onFebruary 24th, 2016. Ashley, Wishek and Zeeland sent theirbest speller from each grade 5-8. These top dogs competedagainst one another to find two spellers tough enough toparticipate in the State Spelling Bee. The Ashley students,Zach St. Aubin (5th), Colton Martz (6th), Emily St. Aubin(7th), and Caitlin Molter (8th) were the representatives ofeach class from Ashley. Three of them made it to the Top 8,taking them to the high-intensity oral round. With deepconcentration and powerful articulation skills, the studentsused all of the alphabet to prove themselves as worthy oralspellers. Though the Ashley students spelling and vocabularyskills were superb, two Wishek students will be the ones torepresent McIntosh County at the State Spelling Bee. Emilyunofficially took 3rd place, being just one point behind the2nd place winner. Caitlin unofficially took 5th, and Zachunofficially took 6th. We are very proud of our spellers whoput forth their best effort!Ms. EszlingerCAN YOU SPELL HIEROGLYPHICS?
