I ntrod u c tio nNaim Audio products are conceived with performance as the top priority. Carefulinstallation will help ensure that their full potential is achieved. This manual covers allintegrated amplifiers. It begins with some general installation notes. Product specificinformation begins in Section 4.1 Con n ect ionsNote: Please read theStatutory Safety Warningsfound at the end of thismanual.2.1 Mains Plug WiringIn some territories a mains plug may need to be fitted tothe supplied mains lead. As the colours of the wires in themains lead may not correspond with the coloured markingsidentifying the terminals in the plug proceed as follows:It is important for both safety and performance thatthe standard cables supplied are not modified.1. 1 Interconne c t C able sThe wire coloured GREEN-AND-YELLOW must beconnected to the terminal in the plug marked by theletter E or by the safety earth symbol or coloured GREEN orGREEN and YELLOW.If options are available with your equipment andinstallation, DIN interconnect sockets should be used inpreference to RCA Phono sockets. One end of each Naiminterconnect cable is marked with a band to establishits correct orientation. The band denotes the end thatconnects to the signal source. Naim Hi-Line interconnectcable will provide the best results. The wire coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminalin the plug marked with the letter N or coloured BLACK.The wire coloured BROWN must be connected to theterminal in the plug marked with the letter L or colouredRED.Interconnect plugs and sockets should be kept cleanand free from corrosion. The easiest way to clean themis to switch off the equipment, pull the plugs out of theirsockets, and push them back in again. Contact cleanersand “enhancers” should not be used as the film theydeposit may degrade the sound.2 . 2 E q u i p m en t Fu s esMains powered Naim Audio equipment is fitted with amains fuse on the rear panel adjacent to the mains inputsocket. Replace it if necessary only with the spare fusesupplied or with an identical fuse. Repeated failure of thefuse points to a fault that should be investigated by yourretailer or Naim itself.1. 2 Loudspea ke r C able sLoudspeaker cables are vitally important. They shouldeach be at least 3.5 metres long and of equal length. Therecommended maximum is normally 20 metres althoughlonger cables may be viable with some Naim amplifiers.2 . 3 N on -r ew i r a b l e M a i n s P l u g sSome Naim amplifiers are designed only to work withNaim loudspeaker cable and using alternatives maydegrade the performance or even damage the amplifier.Other Naim amplifiers can be used with any high qualityloudspeaker cable although we recommend that Naimloudspeaker cable is used. Naim loudspeaker cable isdirectional and should be oriented so that the printedarrow points towards the speakers. The Naim loudspeakerconnectors supplied are designed to comply withEuropean safety legislation and must be used.If a non-rewirable plug is cut from a mains lead (forwhatever purpose) the plug MUST be disposed of in a wayto render it totally useless. Considerable shock hazard existsif the cut-off plug is inserted into a mains outlet.2 . 4 M a i n s C i r cu i t s a n d C a b l esA hi-fi system usually shares a mains circuit with otherhousehold equipment some of which can cause distortionof the mains waveform. This distortion can in turn lead tomechanical hum from mains transformers. Some Naimtransformers are large in size, making them relativelysensitive to such distortion, and it may be necessary to takeaccount of transformer hum when siting your equipment.Contact your local retailer or distributor for further adviceon loudspeaker cables and connectors.2 Main s P ow erTransformer hum is not transmitted through the speakersand has no effect on the performance of the system;however, a separate mains circuit may reduce it. Sucha circuit (ideally with a 30 or 45 Amp rating) will alsogenerally improve system performance. Advice on theinstallation of a separate mains circuit should be soughtfrom a qualified electrician.Where fused plugs are used 13 amp fuses should befitted. Fuses of a lower rating will fail after a periodof use. Do not wire voltage dependent resistors ornoise suppressors into mains plugs. They degrade themains supply and the sound.Use only the mains leads and plugs supplied or the NaimPowerLine mains cable.E1

I ntrod u c tio n3 Gen er al Instal l a ti o n3 . 4 R a d i o I n t er f er en ceIn some circumstances, depending on where you liveand the earthing arrangements in your home, you mayexperience radio frequency interference. Controls onbroadcasting in some territories allow very high levels ofradio frequency radiation and both the choice and exactsiting of equipment may be critical. Susceptibility to radiofrequency interference is related to the wide internalbandwidth necessary for high sound quality. A radiofrequency filter kit is available for some Naim equipmentbut sound quality will be progressively compromised asmore elements of the kit are fitted.Naim equipment is designed to offer the finestperformance possible avoiding compromisewherever practical. This can lead to circumstancesthat may be unfamiliar. The notes that follow containadvice specifically related to Naim equipment aswell as more general warnings about the use ofdomestic audio products. Please read them carefully.3. 1 S iting The Equipme ntIn order to reduce the risk of hum audible from theloudspeakers, power supplies and power amplifiersshould be located a reasonable distance away fromother equipment. The maximum separation distance forconnected equipment is that allowed by the standardinterconnect lead.3 . 5 L i g h t n i n g P r eca u t i on sYour Naim hi-fi system can be damaged by lightningand should be turned off and disconnected from themains when there is risk of lightning strike. For completeprotection all mains plugs and any aerial cables should bedisconnected when not in use. Some Naim equipment is extremely heavy. Check theweight of the equipment prior to lifting and if necessaryuse more than one person so that it can be moved safely.Ensure that your equipment rack or table can easilysupport the weight and is stable.3 . 6 P r ob l em s ?Source components and power supplies should beswitched on before the power amplifiers. Always switchamplifiers off and wait a minute before connecting ordisconnecting any leads. Always use the power switch onthe product rather than a mains outlet switch.Consumer protection varies from country to country. Inmost territories a retailer must be prepared to take backany equipment he has sold if it cannot be made to worksatisfactorily. A problem may be due to a fault in thesystem or its installation so it is essential to make full use ofyour dealer’s diagnostic skills. Please contact your localdistributor, or Naim Audio directly, if any difficulties cannotbe resolved.A “thump” may be heard from the loudspeakers as poweramplifiers are switched on. This is normal, will not causeany loudspeaker damage and does not point to any faultor problem. A mild “pop” may also be heard shortly afterequipment is switched off. Some Naim equipment is made in special versions fordifferent territories and this makes it impracticable toarrange international guarantees. Please establish thelocal guarantee arrangements with your retailer. ContactNaim Audio directly for help and advice if necessary.3. 2 S witching O n3 . 7 S er v i ce a n d Up d a t es3. 3 Running InIt is essential that repairs and updates are only carriedout by an authorised Naim retailer or at the factory byNaim itself. Many components are custom made, testedor matched and appropriate replacements are oftenunobtainable from other sources.Naim equipment takes a considerable time to run inbefore it performs at its best. The duration varies, but undersome conditions the sound may continue to improve forover a month. Better and more consistent performancewill be achieved if the system is left switched on for longperiods. It is worth remembering however that equipmentleft connected to the mains can be damaged bylightning.Direct contact to Naim for service or update informationshould be made initially through Customer Services:Tel: 44 (0)1722 426600Email: info@naimaudio.comPlease quote the product serial number (found on its rearpanel) in all correspondence.E2

SU P E R N A IT 24 SUP E R NAIT 2 Intro d ucti o n, Instal l a ti on a nd C onnecti onThe Supernait 2 is a very high performance stereo integrated amplifier that combines apreamplifier providing six line-level analogue inputs with a power amplifier rated at 80Watts per channel. The Supernait 2 can be controlled by either its remote handset or byfront panel mounted volume and balance knobs, and mute and input selection buttons. The Supernait 2 remote handset is described in Section 18 of this manual. A front panel6.3mm jack socket enables the use of headphones with the Supernait 2.A variety of power supply upgrade, alternative preamplifier and alternative or additionalpower amplifier options are possible for the Supernait 2. Diagrams illustrating theconnection of some of these are shown in Section 6. If no power supply or alternativeamplifier options are to be employed, the Supernait 2 preamp/power amp link plug, supplied in the accessory pack, must be fitted to the rear panel “preamp out” and“power amp in” sockets. The link plug is shown fitted in Diagram 5.2.Your Supernait 2 should be installed on a dedicated equipment stand intended forthe purpose. Do not stand it directly on top of another item of equipment. Care shouldbe taken to ensure that it is level. The amplifier should be installed in its final locationbefore connecting cables or switching on. Ensure that the volume is turned down beforeswitching on.Note: The Supernait 2incorporates an AVBypass switch on its rearpanel. The switch shouldonly be set to “On” if theamplifier is to be usedin conjunction with anAV processor in a hometheatre system. In allother installations theAV Bypass switch shouldbe set to “Off”. Speakerand amplifier damagemay occur if a signal isinadvertently connectedto the Supernait 2 avinput while the AVBypass switch is “On”.4. 1 Mains P owe r C o nne c tio nConnect the Supernait 2 to a mains power socket usingeither the mains cable supplied or a Naim Power-Line.4. 2 S ignal Inp utsalways be used. Naim speaker cable will provide the bestresults, however, a wide range of speaker cable types canbe used without risk of damage to the amplifier. The Supernait 2 front panel input buttons select the sourceinput signal to be routed to the integral power amplifierand the loudspeakers or headphones. The six buttons arelabelled cd, tuner, hdd (hard disk drive), av, aux 1 and aux 2.Ensure when connecting speakers that they are “inphase”. That is, the positive and negative connectionorientation at both the speaker and amplifier ends of thecable is the same for both channels. The cd, tuner, hdd and av input buttons correspond toparallel DIN and RCA phono input sockets on the rearpanel, while the aux 1 input button corresponds only to apair of RCA phono sockets.4.4 av and hdd OutputsNote: The hdd and av sockets carry both inputs andoutputs. See Section 4.4 for more information. The Supernait 2 av and hdd inputs have associatedoutputs that enable the selected input signal to be routedexternally; to an audio recording component for example. The aux 2 input button corresponds to a DIN input socketon the rear panel. The aux 2 DIN socket also carries apower supply output intended to power a Naim Stagelineor SuperLine phono preamplifier.Note: The av and hdd outputs remain active whiletheir corresponding inputs are selected. Take care thata feedback loop is not inadvertently created by thesimultaneous selection of input and output.Note: For optimum sound quality DIN sockets should beused in preference to RCA phono sockets.4 . 5 H ea d p h on e O u t p u tNote: Where an input has DIN and phono socket optionsonly one should be connected at any one time. The Supernait 2 headphone output is able to drive themajority of headphone types. The 6.3mm (1/4”) jacksocket, rather than the smaller 3.5mm jack socket, providesmore reliable connection and potentially higher soundquality. Most high-quality headphones are supplied withan adaptor that enables use with either 3.5mm or 6.3mmjack sockets. Inserting a headphone plug will mute theSupernait 2 speaker outputs. Removing the headphoneplug will restore the outputs.Always use high quality interconnect cables to connectsources to inputs. The Naim Hi-Line will produce the bestresults.4. 3 S peaker OutputsA set of stereo speaker connection sockets is provided onthe rear panel. optical networks have been made possible by the optical amplifier. Optical amplifiers can be divided into two classes: optical fibre amplifiers (OFA) and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The former has tended to dominate conventional system applications such as in-line amplification used to compensate for fibre losses.
