W W W. O R Z A R U A . O R GSEPTEMBJUERL Y / /O ACUTGOUBESTRThe Architecture of TimeBy Ron MeyersIn his classic essay, “The Sabbath,”Abraham Joshua Heschel notes thatthe observance of Shabbat creates an“architecture of time” that is the locus ofJewish spirituality. Rather than focusingour sense of the sacred in objects orplaces, in cathedrals or statues, we exercise our art in the crafting of time and inthe meanings that our days invoke.Never is this concept more evidentthan in late summer, when our observances are literally about architecture. On the 17th of Tammuz (July 3), a minorfast day, we recall the breach of the citywalls in the Roman siege of Jerusalem, and on the 9th of Av (July 23-24), amajor fast, we recall the destruction ofthe Temples. Our attention to architecture is precisely about our loss of it as anorganizing principle. And in its place wehave erected structures of time: we havethe sequence of four haftarot of rebukethat lead up to Tishe’ah B’Av and thehaftarot of consolation in the sevenweeks that follow. And we have themonth of Elul, in which the daily blowing of the shofar focuses our attention onatonement for the acts of the past year.In each of these structures, the destination is Rosh Hashanah, the birthday ofthe world. Rosh Hashanah is the homebase to which we return for each year’sjourney through the structures of spaceand of time.HIGH HOLY DAY TICKETS Please order any additional tickets now. In the Me’ah GraduateInstitute last January through April, weexamined in detail the social and religious life of Sephardic Jews—from theirorigins in early Roman times and theirdevelopment under Islam through theirexpulsions and forced conversions toChristianity in the last decade of the315th century. Under the guidance of Dr.Benjamin Gampel, Associate Professor ofJewish History at the Jewish TheologicalSeminary, we examined the early years ofthe Sephardic diaspora. Its themes ofcommunal crisis, demographic transposition, and cultural transformation servedas the coda for this seminar. We plan to continue our studies nextfall with a course taught by Dr. RobertA. Harris, Associate Professor of Bible atthe Jewish Theological Seminary, on“The Rise and Fall of Biblical Prophecy.”

InDecember, Herb Lukashok led our discussion of one of the Nextbook series on Jewish topics, BetrayingSpinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity by RebeccaH EVRA K ADISHA S TUDIES TAHARA L ITURGYBy Gerry Solomon and Vera SilverTahara is a ritual of purification, amost solemn, sacred task of theHevra Kadisha. As the Hevra Guideexplains, “Before a funeral, the deceasedis washed, cleansed and ritually purifiedso that, in a symbolic way, he leaves theworld in the same condition as heentered it.”It is a task requiring the utmost inrespect for the dignity and honor of thedeceased, and members of the Hevra whoperform this mitzvah are trained in theproper procedures.Tahara also requires a special liturgy. This liturgy was the topic for study atthis year’s Zayin Adar brunch on the 7thof Adar, the yahrzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu.Zayin Adar is the customary day for celebrating the work of the Hevra Kadisha.About 40 people davened together at theregular Sunday morning minyan onFebruary 25, enjoyed a hot catered buffetbrunch, and then heard Rabbi Wechslerteach about the majestic tahara liturgy. Those in attendance discovered thatRabbi Wechsler has devoted a significantamount of study to this topic. His knowledge, enthusiasm, and devotion to thesubject permeated the room as the groupfollowed the steps involved in a taharaand its accompanying liturgy. There weremany questions and remarks as we learnedabout the progression of the ritual andthe beautiful and honorable words thataccompany it. Those who have participated in a tahara shared their uniquefeelings and experiences. The next formal meeting of theHevra Kadisha will take place after thesummer, but you may join at any time. Please speak with either Vera Silver orGerry Solomon. Their telephone numbersare available through the Or Zarua office. And, by the way, the next time youhear a plate or cup crash and break, collectthe pieces of broken crockery and bringthem to Or Zarua. These pieces, calledsherblakh, are used during taharot to coverthe eyes and mouth of the deceased. We have a beautiful, special container forthese sherblakh on the fifth floor.Continued from page 6Frieda Plotkin, with thanks to RabbiHarlan J.
