History of ISA Standards & Practices 1945 – The Instrument Society of America is founded inPittsburgh, PA. 1949 – The first ISA standard RP 5.1 Instrument FlowPlan Symbols is issued. Today – ISA is accredited as a standards developmentorganization (SDO) by the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI) and recognized by the InternationalElectrotechnical Commission (IEC) TC65. Over 4,000 individuals aremembers of over 140 standardscommittees and subcommittees.4

American National Standards ANSI – American National Standards Institute Governing body for US National standards Since 1918– Originally AESC (American Engineering Standards Committee) Over 10,000 American National Standards Over 125,000 companies represented Principles– Openness– Balance– Due Process– Consensus5

International Standards IEC – International Electrotechnical Commission Governing body for international standards on electrical andelectronic related standards Since 1906 Over 6,000 IEC standards and reports Over 95% of the world population is represented6

Accessing ISA Standards ISA members– View all ISA standards and technical reports– IEC standards are not viewable (IEC61511) On the ISA website, under standards
