B h a g a v a t aD h a r m a–T h ee - m a g a z i n eo fS r iTHE DEVOTEE’S PRAYER(TO SRI GURU)Sri Guru's mercy is everything guru-krpähi kevalam. Therefore, a disciple shouldpray as follows:"I am most fallen and useless, O Lord. Maymy spiritual master be pleased with me. Mayhe give me the spiritual strength, to followhis directions. May all the obstacles in myworship of the Lord be removed, so that atthe end of my sojourn in this world, I may sitalone, far from the hustle and bustle of thematerial world, and with a steady mind, chant the Holy Names, with intense feeling.May the Lord be merciful, and allow me togive up my last breath in this way.Knowingly or unknowingly, I havecommitted so many offenses to His lotusfeet, and even now I continue to commitsuch offenses. O Lord, please forgive all suchoffenses and give me a place at Your lotusfeet. Make my life complete, by allowing meto associate with those who are dear to You."For so long, I have simply made a pretenseof being initiated. In fact, I have not donethat, which a surrendered soul should do; Ihave not strictly followed my spiritualmaster's instructions. Thus, I have not madeeven a little advancement in spiritual life. Allthe contaminations in my heart, prior toinitiation are still there today, so how is thereG o p i n a t hG a u d i y aM a t hP a g e 2any hope of my attaining the divinerealization, which is said to be the real signof initiation? Like a lump of iron, my heart isdevoid of feelings. Even though I chant theHoly Names, it does not melt. Thus, I amthinking, aparädha phale mama citta bhela vajrasama tuwa näme na labhe vikara"Due to offenses, my heart has become ashard as a thunderbolt. Therefore, no ecstatictransformations take place, when I chantYour name." (Bhaktivinoda Thakura)tabe jani tahe aparädha achaye pracurakrsna-näma béja tahe na haya ankura"Thus, I know I have committed so manyoffenses to the Holy Name, for though I haveplanted the seed of the Name, no creeper oflove has sprouted." (Chaitanya Charitamrta1.8.29)"O Gurudeva! Now in the dusk of my life, Ihave become so forlorn and hopeless. OLord! O You, who see no fault in anyone!Be generous to me and give me your mercy.Help me to be free of all offenses, so Idevelop a taste for the Holy Names, whichyou have instructed me to chant. Allow meto earn the right to be called a genuineservant of your servants. With your divinevision, you see me perfectly, externally andinternally. You know everything I do.Therefore, I pray, that everything I do, mybehavior, and my devotional service, may bea source of pleasure to you."O Lord! Forgive all my offenses, whether Ihave committed them willingly orunwillingly. Forever give me a place amongall your servants, at your lotus feet, wherethere is no more lamentation, no more fear,no more death. Your feet are the only shelterfor one like me, who has found no refugeanywhere in this world. Your feet are thesource of ultimate good for one like me, whohas found no value anywhere in this world."

B h a g a v a t aD h a r m a–T h ee - m a g a z i n eo fS r ibhumauskhalita-padanambhumirevavalambanam tvayi jataparadhanamtvam eva çaranam prabho“Those who trip and fall, have only theground as an aid to again rise up. O Lord! Those who commit offenses to you, have noone but you as a recourse.””So, my dear devotees, tread carefully thepath of devotion. Always pray for the mercyof Krishna, the Guru, and the Vaishnavas.Remember, that progress in devotion, depends on progress in humility that is theArt of Sädhana. From The Art of Sadhana by Srila Bhakti PromodePuri Goswami ThakuraCHATURMASYA VRATAChaturmasya (caturmäsya) is a Sanskritword which means ‘four months’. Duringthese four months, devotees observeausterities while remembering Lord Krishnain the mood of separation. The four monthsfall between the day of çayan ekädaçé in themonth of Äñädha, and continue until theutthana ekädaçé in the month of Kärtik, during the sun’s move to the southernhemisphere (dakñinäyana). The wordçayan in Sanskrit means ‘to sleep’. On çayanekädaçé, the Supreme Lord goes to take rest. This rest continues for four months. After thefirst two months, on the day of pärçvaekädaçé (also known as Vämana ekädaçé),the Lord turns to His other side; the Sanskritword pärçva means ‘side’. The four monthsof rest comes to an end on the day ofutthanaekädaçé(alsoknownasHaribodhiné ekädaçé and prabodhinéekädaçé; the word utthana in Sanskrit means‘to awake’.Throughout the resting period, however, theLord can manifest pastimes. He would stillaccept services from His devotees, andmanifest many pastimes just as when He isawake, despite being apparently asleep.G o p i n a t hG a u d i y aM a t hP a g e 3During these four months, devotees do notconsume green squash (lauki), beans, tomato, eggplant, pointed gourd (patol),urad dal or biuli dal, no western vegetablesor foods, etc. As a general rule, we do notconsume foods which are difficult to digest(tamo guna) and we avoid foods whichcreate the arising of the mood of passion(rajo guna) in our consciousness. Duringthe full four months, kalmi shaak is alsoprohibited because the Lord is said to besleeping on a bed of that type shaak (a typeof leafy green); He is also sleeping on apillow of pointed gourd which is why it isavoided during the four months. During thefirst month of chaturmasya, devotees do notconsume any types of spinach. In the secondmonth, devotees do not consume yogurt.During the third month, devotees do notconsume milk. During the fourth month, devotees follow an austere diet, focusing allof their energy on searching for Krishnaunder the guidance of Srimati Radharani andHer sakhis.Kärtik month is the last month ofChaturmasya. It is a very special month whilethe Lord manifests numerous sweet pastimesin Vrindavan. On Kärtik pürnima, Hesuddenly disappeared from the RasaMandala with Radharani. However, Krishnalater also leaves Radharani alone. All Hersakhis meet with Radharani and during thewhole month, and they search for Krishna inthe mood of separation. Therefore, duringKärtik month, we conduct parikrama inVrindavan Dham, implying that we aresearching for Krishna under the guidance ofRadha and Her sakhis. His Divine Grace Srila PrabhupadaBhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakurused to austerely observe this Chaturmasyavrata by eating only once a day, two and ahalf handfuls of prasäda off the floor. Hewould chant three lakhs (300,000) of HolyNames daily. He would also sleep on thefloor and would not shave his head or beard. All of this was done in a mood of intenseseparation from the Supreme Lord.

B h a g a v a t aD h a r m a–T h ee - m a g a z i n eo fS r iIn order to follow his footsteps, we also tryour best to observe the Chaturmasya vrata. The main purpose of our observing theChaturmasya vrata is to establish the feelingof separation from the Lord in our hearts, and remember the Lord in every step of ourlives. We want to stay close to the Lord byattentively chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. The main goal of our spiritualpractice should be to fix our mind andconsciousnessontheLord.TheChaturmasya vrata is very effective foraccomplishing this while tasting thevipralambha rasa – union in separation.Note: This year (2020), the Chaturmasyavrata started on 1 July and ends on 26November; the four months/period as thefollowing:v first period 1 July to 30 Julyv second period 31 July to 29 Augustv third period 30 August to 27Octoberv fourth period 28 October to 26November.The extra month is due to the presence ofadhik-mäsa or Purushottama month in theVedic calendar this year.v Purushottama month 18 Septemberto 17 OctoberWritten by Srila Bhakti Bibudha Bodhayan GoswamiMaharaja, July 2020PURUSHOTTAMA MONTH VRATAKrishna Purushottama Masa: The ExtraMonthWe call Purushottama month the ‘adhikmäsa’ (extra month). It is also called, ‘malamäsa’, which means dirty or useless month. In India, the sädhus (holy persons),sädhakas (spiritual practitioners) and piouspeople of all sampradäyas (lineages)G o p i n a t hG a u d i y aM a t hP a g e 4observe this month with due care. All areobserving and engaging in austeritiesaccording to their capacity. We should try toobserve the following practices for thewhole month. At least three times (morning, noon andevening) each day we should chantKaundinya Muni’s mantra, which is found inthe Hari-Bhakti Vilas:goverdhana-dharam vande gopälamgoparupénamgokulotsavam ishänam govindamgopikäpriyamMeaning: Goverdhana-dharam vande: Iworship the lifter of Govardhana hill;gopälam goparupénam: who has thebeautiful form of a cowherd boy, and whocontinually plays with the gopas;gokulotsavam-ishänam: He is the Lord ofGokula wherein every day is a festival;govindam gopikäpriyam: He is the giver ofpleasure to the cows and spiritual senses andthe beloved of the gopi damsels of Vraja. We should also:v Try to maintain celibacy this month.v Instead of sleeping on a comfortablebed, sleep on the floor (use a thin mator blanket if necessary).v Take bath daily before sunrise.v Wake up 1 hour and 36 minutesbefore sunrise (during the brahmamuhurta) or as early as possible andchant‘Pancha-tattva’and‘Mahamantra’ at least 12 times.v Each day chant a fixed number ofrounds. You can increase rounds thismonth according to your ability. Forexample, if you usually chant 16rounds daily then in this Purushottamamonth try to chant at least 24, 32, or 64roundsaccordingtoyourconvenience.v If your schedule allows then performpüja daily by yourself. At least offer a

Itis best to cook with ghee, and eatboiled Hobisanna (a type of ricemixed with Dal and vegetables, but noeggplant or tomato, without salt ifpossible). This month is also called mala-mäsabecause all ritual forms of karma-kända(reward seeking), püjas and yajnas (firesacrifices) don’t give any results this month.OurGaudiyaVaishnavas, however, disagree, saying it is called Mala-Masabecause all days, weeks and months arecreated by the Supreme Lord for observingdevotion. Therefore,weGaudiyaVaishnavas try our best to follow devotionalrituals as our previous teachers haveestablished for the month. Our previous teachers instructed us that inthis month we have to observe devotionalactivities in a special manner. Then quicklyand easily we can destroy the dirt andcontamination caused by our sins, ignoranceand aparädhas.Firstly, the Puranas say that the Supremepersonality of Godhead, Sri Krishna’sG o p i n a t hG a u d i y aM a t hP a g e 5favorite month is Purushottama month. SriKrishna has not only personally created thismonth, but He also named it after Himself.Remember, Sri Krishna alone is the SupremePersonality of Godhead, Purushottama. Asswayam-bhagavän, Sri Krishna is the mostmagnanimous, top-most origin of all theavatäras and incarnations. And soPurushottama month is the top-most, superbest, most powerful spiritual reward givingmonth among all the twelve months.Purushottama month is the holiest month, farsuperior to the pious Vedic months ofVaisäkha (April-May), Kärtika (OctoberNovember) and Mägha (January–February),which the Vedas praise as the three bestreward-giving months of all the 12 months ofthe year. Not only on the earth planet, but allover the universe Purushottama Month ishonored and worshiped by all devotees, sages, gods and goddesses, and even SriLakshmi Devi Herself. If one sincerely worships Radha and Krishnain Purushottama month, he/she will attaineverything he/she wants. One who observesPurushottamavrata will burn up thereactions of all his previous bad karma andattain the direct service of Radha andKrishna. Purushottama month is the bestmonth for all spiritual advancement becauseKrishna overlooks all the aparadhas thismonth. Residence in the holy dhams duringPurushottam month yields 1,000 times thebenefit.AdditionalObservancesPurushottama MonthforDuring the holy month of Purushottama, certain spiritual practices are observed bydevotees, such as, recitation of Sri Radhakripa-kataksha, Sri Krishna-kripa-katakshaand Sri Jagannathashtakam in the mornings,Chauragraganya Purusashtakam in theafternoons, performance of japa or chantingas instructed by Kaundinya Muni, Deepdana or ghee-lamp offerings in the eveningsfor Vishnu, Krishna or Ram, and last but not

This spiritualtechnique, when performed with devotionin Purushottama, can bestow manifoldresults on the sädhaka. Observance ofPurushottama vrata brings eternal joy to thesoul.Puranic Evidence on the Glories ofPurushottam MonthListed below are some çästric quotations arefrom Padma and Skanda Purana:1. Lord Sri Krishna: “Purushottama monthhas all the power I have, to bless its observer. One who follows Purushottama vrata willdestroy all his past sinful reactions. Withoutperforming Purushottama vrata, one cannotperform pure devotional service. The valueof Purushottama month is far more valuablethan all other types of austerities andreligious activities mentioned in the Vedas.Anyone who observes Purushottama vratawill return to My abode, Goloka, at the endof his life.”2. Durvasa Muni: “Just by bathing in a holyriver during Purushottama month, onebecomes sinless. The glory of all othermonths is not equal to one-sixteenth of theglory of the Purushottama Month. By bathingin a holy place, giving charity and chantingthe Holy Name of Krishna duringPurushottama month, all miseries aredestroyed, one attains all kinds of perfectionand fulfills all his a vrata, one attains more benefitthan performing one hundred horsesacrifices. All holy places live within thebody of a Purushottama month vrati (anobserver of this penance). Anyone whofaithfully performs Purushottama vrata willgo to Goloka Vrndavana.”4. Narada Muni: “Purushottama month is thebest of all months, vratas and austerities. JustG o p i n a t hG a u d i y aM a t hP a g e 6by faithfully hearing the glories ofPurushottama month, one attains Krishnabhakti and immediately nullifies his sinfulreactions. One who performs Purushottamavrata properly will attain unlimited piety andspiritual merit (sukrti) and go to the spiritualworld.”5. Sages of Naimisaranya: “MercifulPurushottama month acts like a desire tree tofulfill a devotee’s desire.”6. Hari-bhakti-vilasa (Vol 4, Vs 437): “DuringPurushottama month, one should rememberLord Krishna, and then donate thirty-threemilk cakes cooked in ghee to grhasthaVaishnava brahmanas, who are well versedin çastras. Failing to do so, one loses all thepiety he accumulated in the previous year.”Comment: Vrndavana Vaishnavas usuallyobserve this by donating two kilos of goodquality milk cake from a sweet shop to a fewVaishnava pandas or püjaris or good templedevotees.Compiled from various sources and edited by SrilaBhakti Bibudha Bodhayan Goswami Maharaja,August 2020SrilaBhaktivinodeThakuraPurusottama Month VrataonSrila Bhaktivinode Thakur used to performthe nirapekña vrata (neutral vow), which is30 days of concentrated, one pointedworship and service to Radha-Govinda’sconjugal form by hearing, chanting, remembering Their divine names, forms, qualities, pastimes. All day and night, hearabout Bhagavan Sri Sri Radha-Krishna’sglories, chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, and take mahä-prasädam only.“O living entity! Why are you lazy inperforming haribhajana in the month ofPurushottama? This month, made by theLord of Goloka, Himself, is the pinnacle ofall months. It is even better than the greatlypious Kärtika, Mägha and Vaisäkhamonths. With special bhajana, worship Sri Sri

B h a g a v a t aD h a r m a–T h ee - m a g a z i n eo fS r iRadha Krishna. You will gain everything.”There are normally 12 months in one year. Inline with varna and asrama, various piousactivities to be performed have beendescribed for the 12 months. When the 13thmonth is joined with the 12 months, it comesto be known as the adhik-mäsa or karmahina month in which no karmic activitiesconcerning piety can produce results. Thismonth appears every three years. The Brhannaradiya Purana describes thePurushottama month. adhik-mäsa, the chiefof all months, feeling sad due to thehumiliatory ideas associated with itself, approaches Narayana in Vaikuntha andexplainsthesituation.Narayanasubsequently takes adhik-mäsa along withHim to Lord Krishna in Goloka. Krishna, hearing malamasa's sadness, overcome withcompassion, speaks as follows. “O Lord ofRamaa Devi, in the same way in which I amknown in the world as Purushottama, thisadhik-mäsa will also be famously known inthe world as Purushottama. All of myqualities are offered to this month. Just likeme, this month will be the chief of allmonths. This month is worshippable andworthy of being praised with prayers. Allother months are sakama, filled with materialdesires. This month is niñkäma, withoutmaterial desires. Whether one is akäma,without any material desires, or is sakäma,with material desires, if he worships thismonth, then all of his fruitive reactions getdestroyed and he attains Me. My devoteessometimes get involved in offenses, but inthis month, there will be no offenses. In thismonth, all those people who are mostfoolish and do not perform chanting andcharity etc., those who do not performactivities for eternal benefit and who do nottake baths etc., and those who are inimicaltowards the devas, holy places andbrahmanas, all of these evil, nefarious, unfortunate people, living off of the wealthof others, will not even attain happiness intheir dreams. In this Purusottama month, those who worship Me with bhakti, love andG o p i n a t hG a u d i y aM a t hP a g e 7devotion, attain wealth, sons etc., enjoyinghappiness and at the end become residentsof Goloka.Serve Lord Purushottama with utmost care. This service to Purushottama is the greatestsädhana and the greatest provider of results.RecitemantrassuchastheGovardhanadharam mantra with bhakti andyou will attain Purushottamadeva. Meditateon Radha along with Krishna who is thecolor of a fresh raincloud having two handsholding a Murali flute, dressed in yellowgarments. One should follow the vrata in theway in which Damodara vrata is followed, offering lamps for the pleasure ofPurushottama, either with ghee or if thatcannot be afforded, then with sesame oil.Vratisshalltakeabathbeforebrähmamuhurta - if possible, then performacamana and apply tilaka, sankha and cakrawith gopicandana. Performing püja ofRadha Krishna must be done in this month.Purushottama Sri Krishna is the main lord ofthis month. There are additional services thatcan be done such as offering 16 articles ofworship to Sri Krishna, bathing early, listento Srimad Bhagavatam with bhakti, worshipthe salagrama sila, etc. In he who follows thisvrata, all the holy places and devatäs reside.Service to Vaishnavas is of great importanceduring this month. Those normally engaged 100 percent of thetime in bhägavata dharma should, inPurushottama month, one-pointedly engagein devotion taking sri bhagavat-prasädaaccording to the rules, and, according toone's goal, engage in hari-çravana-kértana.There are other processes and rules offollowing the vrata for those not involved100 percent in devotional service. Somepeople take havisyänna during this month.Suta Goswami says to avoid misfortune, follow this vrata.Adapted from an article by Om VisnupadaBhaktivinode Thakura from the Gaudiya Magazine, published on 14 July 1928

We areexpressing our deepest gratitude to You forbeing supreme kind to all.Raksha-bandhan is a festival that signifies thestrength and love between siblings. Thisfestival is observed on the full moon day(pürnima) of Shravana month; whichgenerally falls in August. In this festival, typically the sister ties a thread (räkhi) onher brother’s wrist as a gesture for his long, healthy and prosperous life. In return, thebrother promises to protect his sister from allthe material dangers and ensures her wellbeing.Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu broughtthe most powerful flow of Sri Harinamsanskirtan to the earth so that all non-livingand living beings can relish divine bliss. Weare expressing our deepest gratitude to Youfor mercifully bestowing upon us Sri HareKrishna Mahamantra. Many fallen soulswhose life was about to sink like a rudderless ship in the middle of stormy sea couldreach ashore for your timely guidance.Kindly accept our gratitude Shrila Gurudev JiMaharaj for being our Supreme Captain andSupreme Path Finder. This festival has been celebrated in India forcountless years. If we take a look at somereligious scriptures, we can see several pairsof inspirational siblings from it. DraupadiKrishna,Subhadra-Krishna,SubhadraBalarama, etc. They continue to spread theirglorious light in our lives even after so manyyears of their appearance on this materialplanet. They have set examples of not onlyhow ideal siblings should become but alsohow one should lead their lives in order toserve and enlighten the lives of peoplearound them.In this world full of vices we see you asembodiment of all virtues. We express ourThe bond between Draupadi and Krishnawas very special and admired forever by

Once, Lord Krishnagot a snick on his finger by wielding themighty Sudarshan chakra. Everyone aroundhim started to search for a piece of cloth totie it around his finger to stop the bleeding.Draupadi, who was also present on the site, quickly tore off a piece of cloth from hersaree and bandaged it around Lord Krishna’sfinger. The divine lord was impressed by herpure devotion, love, and sincerity towardsHim and committed to protecting herthroughout her life. Later down the years, when Draupadi was humiliated inHastinapur’s court by Duryodhana andDushasana in an attempt to disrobe her, sheremembered her sakha (friend) and brotherKrishna, “O Govinda, O Keshava, O BelovedLord, save me!”, she called. Krishna beingthe ultimate controller and her belovedbrother, kept His promise and helpedDraupadi by extending her saree cloth byimmeasurable yards. She was thus savedfrom humiliation by the Supreme LordHimself. The above incident occurred in the dväparayuga – a time when people could stillbelieve in the virtue of others. Today, we livein kali-yuga: the age of Kali. Here, thepeople we put forth our faith in, are usuallythe most unfaithful ones. In this materialworld, nothing is constant. Happiness, sadness, gain, loss, health, despair, love, hate, friends, and enemies everything istemporary and worldly. Once we leave thismaterial body, all of the above will be lefthere; even the brother we tie our rakhi to.The only thing that will be permanent isKrishna. Sri Krishna is the ultimatecontroller, the supreme Lord of this universeand beyond. All of us suffer from some sortof void in our lives. So, if we submiteverything in the lotus feet of the Lord SriKrishna, we will find content, even in thevoids of our lives.
