African cruises are seasonal as cruise lines deploytheir ships to the West Coast of Africa during the Europeanwinter months. These cruises depart mainly from Cape Townor Durban in South Africa.2467THE PACIFICAustralians are hooked on the relaxed nature and warmwelcome of our South Pacific Polynesian and Melanesianneighbours. Palm lined, pristine beaches and tropical lagoonswith safe swimming make this region a real family favourite.A seven-night cruise departing from Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney,Melbourne or Auckland can take you to idyllic destinationsthroughout PNG, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands and Vanuatu. Longer cruises will takeyou even further to the islands of Fiji, Tonga, Western andAmerican Samoas, The Cook Islands and Tahiti in FrenchPolynesia. The Hawaiian Islands in the Northern Pacificare another year round favourite with itineraries includingstunning beaches, surf, Pearl Harbour, active volcanoes andHawaiian culture.ASIA and INDOCHINACruising makes exploring the fascinating countries andcultures of this region effortless. Singapore is a departureport for round-trip cruises through the Straits of Malaccato Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia and to Phuket, KoSamui and Bangkok in Thailand. Hong Kong and Shanghaiare gateway ports for itineraries that include South Korea,Japan, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Other itineraries sailbetween Southeast Asia and Australia. River cruising optionsare available in Myanmar (River Kwai), Laos, Cambodia andVietnam (Mekong River) and China (Yangtze River).EUROPEAN RIVERSVisit UNESCO World Heritage-listed villages and towns, medieval walled cities with cobbled streets and castles, superbmuseums and art galleries. Marvel at the beautiful sceneryof the wine growing regions. Europe’s Rhine, Moselle andDanube rivers are the most popular waterways for rivercruise vessels but you can also cruise through France alongthe Saone, Rhone and Seine, through Portugal and Spain onthe Duoro River, and along canals, rivers and lakes betweenMoscow and St Petersburg in Russia.98EUROPE – SOUTH - THE ATLANTICand MEDITERRANEANMediterranean ports offer an alluring combination of history, architecture and rich culture combined with fabulous foodand wine. A broad range of itineraries take you to islandgroups such as The Canary Islands, Madeira, Malta and theSpanish Balaeric Islands whilst other itineraries include manyiconic port cities. Journeys along thefamed Inside Passage of Alaska mainly depart from Vancouverin Canada and Seattle in the USA. The most popular itinerariestypically include visits to Ketchikan, Sawyer Glacier, Juneau,Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park, Sitka and Anchorage. Cruisesalong the east coast of Canada begin in Montreal, New York orBoston, and ports of call include Halifax, Quebec City, Nova Scotia,New Brunswick and Newfoundland. Cruises also operate along theMississippi in the South and Snake River in the North. Seasonalitineraries operate from Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera,Alaska and to Hawaii. One further itinerary of note traverses theNorth West Passage and tracks north of the continent of NorthAmerica from Greenland to Nome in Alaska or continues across toEastern Russia and down the coast to Vladivostok. Cruises to theCaribbean depart mainly from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, USA.11THE CARIBBEAN, MEXICO and CUBAMost cruises to this region operate from Florida in the USA.The Caribbean has beautiful islands and intriguing ports such asAruba, Barbados, The Bahamas, Haiti, The Dominican Republic,Grand Turk and Cancun. Itineraries may also provide access tosites of ancient civilizations such as Chichen Itza of the MayanEmpire in Mexico or simply step back in time with a visit toCuba. Many more passengers cruise the Caribbean simply toexperience the massive superliners that sail these waters. Theseships are destinations in themselves and an increasing numberof Australians and New Zealanders are keen to sample this styleof cruising. It should be said that not all ships that sail theCaribbean carry 6000 passengers!12EUROPE – NORTH and THE BALTICMany cruises embark from UK, Denmark and Germany, which suit Australians and New Zealanders, many of whomhave family ties with Europe and like to take a cruise whilstvisiting friends and relatives there! Northern Europeanitineraries cover dozens of ports around the UK, Ireland,Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Estonia,Iceland, the Arctic and Western Russia. Many of these cruisesare confined to the European summer months, however, some coastal shipping routes, in addition to providingcruise passenger options, also operate year round to providesupplies to remote ports otherwise inaccessible by road or air.Transatlantic crossings operate from Europe to New York andprovide a nostalgic glimpse of travel from a bygone era.SOUTH AMERICA and ANTARCTICAIt is possible to circumnavigate South America via the PanamaCanal in the north and Cape Horn in the south however there is anamazing array of destinations in between. Some ocean itinerarieseven include the mighty Amazon River in Brazil, sailing up as far asManaus, whilst other smaller ships and boats will take passengerseven further upstream to Iquitos in Peru. Other cruises includeVenezuela, Columbia, the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, TheFalkland Islands, South Georgia and the Chilean Fjords. Ushuaia(the world’s most southerly city) is the main “jumping off” port forcruises that visit the Antarctic, however, some cruises depart fromValparaiso (Santiago) in Chile or Buenos Aires in Argentina. Whilstcrossing the Straits of Magellan can be an adventure all on itsown it should be noted that most Antarctic cruises are expeditioncruises and carry wildlife experts who lead information-rich shoreexcursions, landing on the ice via Zodiacs!Around the World, Half RoundWorld and Circle CruisesYear after year the major cruise lines deploy their ships tocircumnavigate the globe with itineraries ranging from 64 to over100 days. Australia is fortunate to have departures each April/May. “sector cruises” are also available on each round the worldvoyage enabling guests to experience one way itineraries of justa part of the global voyage. Circle fares are becoming also verypopular with great itineraries starting from Australian ports andcircling either the South Pacific, South America or the IndianOcean and South Africa, not to forget circumnavigation cruisesaround Australia.3

WHICH STYLE?WHICH CABIN, STATEROOM OR SUITE?NOW YOU KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO CRUISE,THE NEXT STEP IS CHOOSING THE SHIP THAT BEST SUITS YOU.IT’S YOUR CHOICENo matter what your interests, the activities you enjoy or the foodyou prefer; there’s a ship that’s right for you. Eleven major cruiselines and dozens of smaller companies offer voyages on a hugerange of vessels to destinations around the world - so the firstquestion to ask yourself before you choose a ship is, “What kindof a cruise am I looking for?”Your answer will help determine the style of cruise experienceyou seek, and that in turn will narrow down your choice ofsuitable ships. A retired professional couple who enjoy fine dining, prestigious wines and discussing the history of democracy, forinstance, may feel more at home on a mid-size or small ship whichcaters to worldly, sophisticated cruise travellers rather than funfocused singles, couples or families, honeymooners and groups offriends, who may prefer a resort-style ship - especially if their ideaof fun is cocktails, sporting activities and dancing into the night.Large ships suit families well as they cater for guests of all ages, providing clubs for youngsters while allowing their parents andgrandparents ample free time by the pool and the chance topractice their golf, surfing, climbing, have spa treatments, attendyoga or cooking classes. Many mid-size ships also cater for families, and offer excellent kids’ clubs. For many, the quality of food and wine, cuisine and dining style arecrucial. If you love gourmet food, smaller ships are likely to suit youMost cruise lines refer to even their most basic cabin as a stateroomso the term “Stateroom” can itself be rather misleading. Dictionarydefinitions vary but to keep things in perspective it is easier to say thaton all ships there is a large variety of cabins of various sizes and withvarious features to choose from. Think too of the difference betweenEconomy Class, Premium Economy, Business and First Class on anaircraft.so with no natural light once the lights are turned off, it is dark! ThisGenerally speaking there are 4 main categories to choose from:Inside, ocean view, balcony or verandah cabins and suites.view may only have been via a port hole but on today’s modern shipsWithin each category there are many sub-categories and variations.Pricing of a particular cabin type may also be based on it’s location onthe ship, its size, and so on.be opened. Many first-time cruisers forgo ships that have formal nights, preferring casual dress. If a cruise you like has black-tie eventsbut you don’t want to glam up, check to see if the ship also offersinformal dining options. The most affordable are cabins situated at the very front, back or in“awkward” positions on the ship eg next to lifts, laundry and otherpublic areas. Prices slowly increase both as the cabins get closer tomidship (the centre) of the ship and from the lower to the higherdecks.slightly larger than inside/outside cabins usually with a small loungeRemember to match the ship and cruise you choose to your ownpreferred activities and interests. Do you want nonstop activity andupbeat ambience, or would you prefer to read, relax, play bridge andlisten to lectures on photography, wildlife, history, wine or food?On each ship there are family friendly cabins, staterooms and suitesthat can be used as triple or quad share for families with children orfriends travelling together. Some cabins have interconnecting doors toother cabins. A small number of family friendly cabins are available onsome cruise lines which will take up to 8 guests in one suite.A number of cabins on each ship are wheelchair accessible with muchlarger bathrooms. These must all be booked well in advance as thereare only ever a limited number available.best; however, larger ships do offer a wider range of cuisines andrestaurants, some overseen by celebrity chefs. Also consider whether you mind dining at set times and beingseated with strangers or whether you’d rather decide when, whereand with whom you dine, night by night. Many modern shipsoffer flexible dining times and allow you to choose your diningcompanions. If this is important to you it pays to check theavailable dining options for a particular ship before you book.Lastly, the size of your ship can be a good indication of the style ofcruise. Typically, the smaller the ship, the more tailored it may beto your tastes. By the same token, a large ship offers an array ofchoices, but it may also mean you have to queue at certain times.Seek our specialist advice to help you decide which options best suityou, your personality and your travel budget.AT A GLANCE: CAPACITY AND STYLE OF CRUISESMALL/BOUTIQUE SHIPS20-600 passengers. You can find almosteverything from cargoand scientific ships to themost luxurious yachts andships afloat. Many provideexceptional service.4MID-SIZE SHIPS600-1600 passengers.Have fewer public roomsand less glitzy shows, but adecent range of activitiesand entertainment, andchoice of dining venues. There may be queues butthey generally move quickly.may be disorientating to some as when you wake up it can be difficultto figure out whether it is now night or day – a clock comes in handy!Inside cabin sizes vary from ship to ship but all are spacious enough.Outside cabins are also known as Ocean view cabins. They are designedsimilarly to Inside cabins and also come with a view! Years ago thisthey have much larger picture windows. Ocean view windows cannotBalcony or Verandah cabins are a great choice. They are normallyarea and a door through which you can step out to enjoy the fresh airand feel the breeze from your own private balcony. Balconies range insize from ship to ship and the room category and deck you may be on.Suites are everyone’s favourite when you really want to spoilyourselves. There are many different categories to choose from Mini, Junior, Grand, Royal, Penthouse and Owners Suites each subcategory larger and with more features than the previous.Just as amazing as the larger size of the cabin is the variety ofinclusions - Bathrobes and slippers, private spas, marble bathroomslarger than your own at home, hammocks on the balcony, separateAll cabins have as a minimum twin or double bedding, seating, TV,dressing table, wardrobe and their own private bathroom.lounge and dining rooms, powder rooms, walk in wardrobes, additionalInside cabins are the most economical.
