I am excitedto see the kids, and hope they are ready to return to our monthly Juniors Group to learn more about Earth Science with fun activities andexperiments. Our next meeting will be on September 8th @ 7:00 pmat the Fruitland Grange (upstairs). We have been having trouble with kids arriving later than 7:00. Wecannot stop to help the kids coming in late, we have a very short window of time to spend with the kids making projects. When the Business Meeting is finished downstairs, we are notified to come downwith the kids for Show & Tell, the drawing, and snacks. Most of thetime we haven't finished our activities and must rush to completethem. If you are late do not bring your child upstairs, you may beturned away. It is very disruptive to all involved. PLEASE ARRIVEON TIME!!!Please keep in mind that PARENTS/GUARDIANS MUST REMAIN WITH THEIR CHILDREN FOR LIABILITY AND SAFETY REASONS. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THISRULE.Editor: Jennifer Barnstien , barnstienjp@comcast.net, Edited by: Helen Hammond., Tech Dept: Margaret BarnstienINSIDE THIS ISSUE2017 Officers & Chairs . 2Upcoming Shows. 3Show & Tell Themes . 3Puzzle. 3Fieldtrip . 4

3PICNIC 2017Our Club picnic was fun and filling. We had close to 30 people thereand some really good food. But! Something was missing. Maybe it was just that we were in a different place and didn’t know what to do with ourselves. Part of theproblem was there were several other events that same day that made itso some of our regulars couldn’t make it. No rock pile to pick through. We only had one dog to pet. Does it sound like I’m whining? I think wejust needed to plan for a horse-shoe competition or hike around thepark, or better yet a scavenger hunt!!?Since we need to find a new, regular place to have our picnics SwissPark is one option. Why don’t we shop around and try out some otherlocations like DeCoursey Park and Clarks Creek Parks? If anyone has otherideas before next Spring please do some research and give the information toone of the Board members. We need as much lead time as possible to get reservations in and to start planning for 2018.Thank you to Tony, Dick and Brett for cooking the hotdogs and hamburgers.Thank you to everyone that provided food and drinks and some good conversation. The tail-gate sale was awesome. Every year I tell myself “Do not buy anyrocks!” Then I do it anyway.Oh! Whoever made the mint brownies needs to ‘fess up, provide the recipeand bring them to the October Potluck and Auction.See you soon!Nancy LeMayUpcoming Shows as copied from the NFMS NewsletterOctober 7- 9, 2017Fri, Sat 10-5Marysville Rock andGemTotem Middle School7th Street and State Ave.Marysvilee WABill Moser,bill-jj@comcast.net(425)238-8222October 13-15Fri,Sat:10-6Sun: 10-5Portland RegionalGem & Mineral ShowAssociationWashington County Fair Complex 873 Julian Gray 503 647 2418NE 34th Avenue Hillsboro OR 97124 juliangrocks@gmail.com 6034 NE Maidstone Street Hillsboro OR 97124 Portland Regional Gem and Mineral ShowAssociation PO Box 5401 Portland Or97228October 21-22Sat 10-6Sun 10-4Hells Canyon GemClubNez Perce County Fair Building1229 Burrell AveLewiston IDLinn Enger(208)746-4957engerrocks@yahoo.com

6This is the article that Brett Lawrence Won an award for at the NFMNS.Thanks for sharing it Brett. You Know You are Having an Interesting RockhoundingExperience When 1. You walk around in circles for half an hour to find that special dig siteor hole that should be just past that next bush.2. Speaking of bushes, there never seems to be a big enough one whenwith a group and you need to take care of personal business.3. You pick up your rucksack next to you and a slug drops into your lap(that rates a ‘10’ on the ugh scale).4. You’re all packed up to head home, exhausted, no extra space, and aton of stuff to carry and you spot one more specimen.5. You get a good aerobic workout when you keep more muck on youshovel than sling aside.6. You clobber your head with a sharp tool and decide the blood flow isnot serious enough to warrant a trip to urgent care.7. The weather forecast is okay, you dress for warm, dry weather andthe only cloud to spawn moisture in the region just happens to beparked right overhead. (How many points is that weather forecasterworth?)8. In a reversal just as cruel, you dress warmly for a mostly cool showerytime and out comes the sun, hoisting the temp and humidity, andbaking you.9. You think you have privacy on that lonely country road, start changingyour clothing behind the car, see the parade coming, and turn intosuper speed changer.10. You think you remembered to pack it all, get halfway to yourdestination, and—“Oh my gosh! I forgot the stupid—” (It’s amazinghow those inanimate objects get the blame sometimes!)11. That one of the harsher twists of fate is when you get home andrealize you left a one only tool back at the digs and that it will easilyset you back ten bucks. It just aches to know some lucky dog afteryou is the richer for it.12. You discover the freeway exit was several miles back and the fieldtrip group is leaving in less than ten minutes. (Variable speed limitsare great solutions.)13. The strap on your tote bag packed with the valuable finds you toiledso hard for breaks, spilling the contents under all that ground growthand clutter.
