NFHS Wrestling RulesEach state high school association adopting theseNFHS wrestling rules is the sole and exclusive sourceof binding rules interpretations for contests involvingits member schools. Any person having questionsabout the interpretation of NFHS wrestling rulesshould contact the wrestling rules interpreterdesignated by his or her state high schoolassociation.The NFHS is the sole and exclusive source ofmodel interpretations of NFHS wrestling rules. Staterules interpreters may contact the NFHS for modelwrestling rules interpretations. No other modelwrestling rules interpretations should be considered.

2008-09 NFHS Wrestling Editorial Changes 3-3-2Clarified that the assistant scorers are alsoresponsible for circling first point(s) scored in theregulation match. 4-2-4Added the word “designated” to the description ofthe on-site meet physician. 5-15-2bAdded the words “is considered to be” for furtherclarification of the defensive wrestler’s shoulder orscapula as supporting points. 5-16-3Added an “(s)” to supporting point(s) for clarity. 5-22-1Further defined “Random Draw” based on the 200708 rules change.

2008-09 NFHS Wrestling Editorial Changes 5-28-1Deleted “Except for the false start or incorrectstarting position” from description of TechnicalViolations. 6-2-2Clarified the proper reporting sequence asdetermined by the pre-meet disk toss in a dual meet. 6-6-6The words “will be made” were added for clarity indescribing how the referee will communicate to theopposing coach on a rules explanation. 7-4-3Deleted the words “It would include, but” from thedescription of flagrant misconduct. 8-1-6Added the words “an individual” before tournamentto further clarify that any contestant disqualifiedbecause of flagrant misconduct in an individualtournament is not entitled to any points earned inthat tournament.

CompetitionRule 1 Rule 1-2-2:No wrestler shall represent the school in more than oneweight class in any meet or compete in more than fivematches (championship or consolation), including forfeitsin any one day. Rule 1-2-3:No contestant shall wrestle in two consecutive matcheswith less than a 45-minute rest between them. Theconclusion time of each match shall be recorded. Rule 1-2-4:A contestant shall not accept a forfeit in one weight classand compete in another class.

Rule 3-1-1(OHIO Modification)The referee’s uniform consists ofa short sleeve knit shirt, withalternating black and white1-inch stripes.

2008/2009 NFHS Wrestling SkinLesion Form

Team Benches*NFHS Rule 2-2-1:For dual meets, all team personnel,including coaches, other than actual participating contestantsshall be restricted to an area which is at least 10 feet from theedge of the mat and the scorer’s table, where facilities permit.*NFHS Rule 2-2-2: During tournament competition, a maximumof two team personnel (coaches and/or non-participatingcontestants) will be permitted on chairs at the edge of the mat. Itis permissible to allow coaches on the corner of the mat in arestricted zone. In tournaments where coaches are permitted onthe corner of the mat, the restricted zone shall be defined byeither a contrasting line marked on the mat with paint or tape or acontrasting colored surface under the chairs. The restricted zoneshall be no closer than 5 feet to the edge of the circle. Coachesshall be seated at least 10 feet from the scorer’s table, wherefacilities permit.

Conduct of Coaches, TeamPersonnel and Others*NFHS Rule 7-5-2: Coaches and other teampersonnel are restricted to the bench/chairswhile the clock is running and during normal outof bounds and resumption of wrestling. Thecoach may move towards the mat only during acharged time-out or at the end of the match.(See Rule 2-2)*NFHS Rule 7-5-3: Unsportsmanlike conduct –is called on coaches or other team personnelwho violate the bench decorum rule (7-5-2).
